10 biggest contracts in the NFL this season:

1) Aaron Rodgers (didn't live up to it)
2) Russell Wilson (didn't live up to it)
3) Kyler Murray (didn't live up to it)
4) Deshaun Watson (didn't live up to it)
5) Patrick Mahomes
6) Josh Allen
7) Derek Carr (didn't live up to it)
8) Dak Prescott (didn't live up to it)
9) Matthew Stafford (didn't live up to it)
10) Kirk Cousins (with the #14 QB rating, didn't live up to it)

Anyone seeing a trend here?

Again it is a double edge sword. You have 5-7 wins w/o Kirk.

Next season you could have 5-7 wins with Kirk. This season was a complete anomaly.

As was 2021....keep cheering on SF and TB.

Saying there can be anything done with Kirk in 2023 is borderline trolling. He can't be cut and he can't traded w/o his approval.

I have posted many posts on what to do.
Rebuild the defense. Cut/trade Thielen, Kendricks, Hicks, Harry, Cook to start. Draft Purdue O'Connell in the 4th or 5th. Spend all FA and almost all trade capital on defense.

You are more into Sabotage than a viable solution.

No cap and you add another 12.5 million dead cap cutting or trading. Neither can be done.

Sounds like a hard couple days of trolling......look up the salary first and come back to non trolling.

Of the players you listed, only Kendricks has trade value. Maybe you get a fourth or fifth rounder for Thielen (and that's a huge stretch). A rookie QB from Purdue in the 4-5 round is a long-term solution at QB? That's interesting. Spend all FA money on defense? What if your two offensive tackles go down in training camp?

Sure, all of those things could turn out to be golden, but on the flip side it sounds like a potential train wreck to me. Mr. Riewer, you're fired!

You gain 14.5 million in cap by cutting Kendricks and Hicks if you can't trade them. You gain 8 million by cutting Cooks. You gain 8 million by cutting Harry. You gain 6.5 by cutting Thielen.

Look at Sportrac and get back to me. That would add 38 million to the books right there. Add a couple pieces to the offense and restructure a couple other contracts (TJ and JJeff) and you would still have money to spend.

It's the same solution I had 2-3 years ago. Any contract extensions had nothing to do with me. Had we done what I suggested we'd be on the road to recovery by now.

The defense was old 2-3 years ago; that is where the mistake was made (resigning Harry & Barr) and resigning Rudolph. 28 million in dead cap this year.

He can't cover a rb any more and is on the other side of 30...we could restructure him but your trolling solution on Kirk isn't a solution.

You want to cut Kirk and keep the 30 year olds on defense? Talk about Sabotage.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/17/2023 7:56:56 AM)

Brad's logic is to keep the slow 30s on defense that hasn't been lower than 25 in 5 years when your home field is turf and cut or trade Kirk adding 12.5 million dead cap.

He isn't paying attention to the Vikings at all.

So lets see if I have this straight:

Eric Kendricks has one year remaining on his contract, that carries an $11.4-million cap hit. He is our best defender.

Kirk Cousins has one year remaining on his contract with a dead cap value of $48.5-million. He's the No. 14 rated QB on his best season.

He wants to get rid of Kendricks.

Phil sounds like every Republican I've ever known. Completely careless with someone else's money.

Eric Kendricks if cut carries 1.9 cap hit, saves 9.5. Hicks if Cut 1.5 cap hit, saves 4.

You aren't doing the math correctly. Once again.

Also Kendricks can't cover speedy RBs (Pollard, Barkley) or WR crossing routes any more. Neither can Hicks. We play home games on Turf plus 2-3 more at least on the road. That won't change with a 3-4 or 4-3. Pollard, Sanders, Jones/Dillon, Barkley, you name it feasted on our 2 MLB.

My first 2 solutions carry 3.4 million cap hit; Save 13.5 million and put us 5 million under the cap.

On the field, I would agree Kirk Cousins was not the top problem in 2022. Off the field, he was easily the top problem and led to the #1 problem (no defense).

Problem with the defense is the drafts have been garbage.

You don’t build a defense via free agency and I don’t recall any studs leaving the Vikings because of cap space.
