Let the offseason begin.

Finally, Ed is gone:

Ed is gone - check

Now trade Kirk, and get some speed on defense.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 6:36:43 PM)

Some good stuff here on potential replacements:

Do you even understand the money grubbing nature of the no trade clause in Cousins current contract?

We are stuck with that loser at least one more season..

Jesus.

Mark Rapley -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 6:46:57 PM)

Much kudos to KOC for moving on early. LaFleur is STILL holding on to Barry and that will submarine him just like he hung onto Drayton way too long. And they understand Kirk isn't the future, especially at his age.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 6:54:49 PM)

KOC needs to find a defensive version of himself. A young, hungry fast riser. KOC probably felt more comfortable with an old school veteran on the other side of the ball. But that turned out to be a mistake.

I don't think the problem was strictly with the 3-4 as a scheme. It can be more flexible against modern offenses. But Donatell seemed to be stuck running a 80s 3-4 or something, against 2020s offenses. And you have to have the personnel for it too. Which we didn't. Whoever the new guy is, he needs to be flexible enough to modify his precious systems if he doesn't have the horses to run it.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 6:55:47 PM)

I think Barry has kept opposing teams from scoring very much, I would be happy if the Packers let go of him, just don't think they will.

David, Leonhard seems like a flexible, good choice.

Desai may also be a good choice.

Although I had pushed for Fangio this year, that article, along with Kirk's play in the 4th quarter, has soured me on that idea. I want a DC that will still be around when the Vikings are developing a good, young QB.

I hope so.

Criteria #1: too many years of experience may be cause for disqualification as an applicant

I’m willing to bet KOC thru Donatello under the bus with KAM and the Wilfs….

I'm intrigued by him too. From the article:

Jim Leonhard, former U of Wisconsin interim head coach, defensive coordinator

Leonhard, 40, has been the defensive coordinator at the University of Wisconsin since 2017, amassing an impressive record. Since taking over as defensive coordinator, Wisconsin’s defense ranks inside the top five of the following categories: scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, passing defense, pass efficiency defense, opponent completion percentage, and opponent third down conversion percentage. Last season, the Badgers were No. 1 nationally in total defense and rushing defense. Still, the question with all successful college coaches is whether they can replicate that success in the NFL.

He’s seen as a defensive guru who uses NFL-style concepts at the college level and is seen as a top candidate for defensive coordinator positions in the NFL. Here is how Leonhard is described schematically while at Wisconsin:

quote:

Leonhard is widely regarded as one of the top defensive coordinators in all of college football. While he utilizes a base 3-4 scheme, his defense deploys various fronts, with a 2-4-5 design regularly used against pass-heavy teams. Leonhard is known for using an array of stunts and blitz packages to aggressively attack offenses while leaving his defensive backs in man-to-man coverage. That is not to say he does not use zone coverage ever, but Leonhard uses a lot of movement and misdirection to keep offenses guessing, regardless of the coverage.

Leonhard is an incredibly cerebral play-caller and is one of the most intelligent people inside the Wisconsin program. Players frequently highlight how he can make the complicated nuances of reading offenses and learning new techniques easy to understand.

One of his strengths is his adaptability. Leonhard has shown a willingness to adjust his defense each year to match the personnel, which has helped maintain Wisconsin’s stout defense year in and year out, despite player turnover each season. Still, the question with any college coach is whether they can have the same success at the NFL level as they had at the college level.

Leonard could be a good fit for the Vikings as they have an increasing number of younger players in need of development. He’d also likely take a much different approach defensively than Donatell or Zimmer have done in recent years, judging by his approach at Wisconsin.

You will be okay when we finally move on from KC..

This outlier season is the only reason he is above .500 in winning percentage after 11 YEARS in the NFL.

How are you gonna be?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 8:42:41 PM)

As much as everyone likes to call this past season an anomaly, I have a feeling next season could end up being quite similar, with most of the wins being one score or less.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 8:44:10 PM)

The improved defense, along with KOC making fewer bad calls, Kirk getting even more comfortable in this system, will be offset by a tougher schedule.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/19/2023 9:09:57 PM)

Next season I am sorta expecting a bad season with the tough schedule, but if they get a lot of wins in the regular season again, I think it will be many one score wins.

Phillips not going to Chargers, staying in Minnesota:

But Phillips reportedly declined, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted Thursday, “The Chargers have requested to speak with Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips about their OC position, but Phillips plans to stay with Minnesota, per sources. Phillips highly valued there and Vikings building something he wants to see through.”

Can't believe you guys are still trying to parse the final play. How about we agree on this? The Giants outplayed the Vikings on that play.

I liked seeing and discussing Warner's analysis. Is there news about something else? A brewing rumor?

What's of importance to me is that five days removed from the end of the season, Ed Donatell is still an employee of the franchise.
