A running game against the Giants was imperative and Cook was just useless... He was hesitant and peddling and pumping so much with little positive gain after ANY contact...

Cook looked cooked in the playoffs and was so surprised they didnt change it up with Mattison more or even mix up some Ham and back ups... Cook was just another part of coaching equation that couldnt scheme and adjust with correct players when it most mattered...

A lot of good with KOC but also some big rookie coach indecision or mistakes in his first season as well....

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 8:21:55 PM)

Not arguing about Cook, but Philly is killing in the rush game because their OL is dominant and everyone else is in on the action. Never thought I'd see DeVonta Smith block successfully!

This game is a slaughter.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 8:25:05 PM)

KOC isn't a finished product and hopefully will progress. I hope he has struck the right balance with being a nice guy and demanding everything from the players and coaches. It's oft accepted that it is easier to be a hard ass then lighten up vs the reverse.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 8:40:55 PM)

Some good points there Bill, unfortunately.

JC2022 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 8:46:07 PM)

Remember, the Eagles got boatraced last year in their 1st playoff game with a new coach

The Vikings can make a similar jump in 2023, but need to make MANY smart personnel decisions

Go young and hungry over old and expensive

Mark Anderson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 9:01:59 PM)

Chargers interviewing Vikings assistant QB coach Jerrod Johnson for OC position. A chance for another 3rd rounder. If he's hired.

Do we want McCardell and Johnson on our staffs or do we want two 3rd rounders? I'll take the draft picks.

HL OSWALD -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 9:02:00 PM)

The Eagles GM was very proactive in plugging in players through the whole season

Shows a team with a up and coming QB on a rookie scale contract can sense their rise and with smart moves plug in a mix of vets and young hungry guys to make their run over a 2021 season where they were a 500 team

It's seriously time to rip the bandaid off. Get rid of these dumbass contracts even if it means you win 3 games next year. Whatever they do DO NOT extend Cousins.

I get the impression the guys that are ok with 3 wins next year [and wasnt 3 yrs of the same mentioned?] are not drawing a pension yet

I get the impression some are ok with Cousins taking us nowhere while way overpaying for "names". Sometimes you have to start over to a degree.

I'm wrong on this one. They would have to be hired to be a Head Coach or GM.

What is the cap space for this offseason?

Option A
Sign enough free agents to make one more run with Cousins

Option B
Cut all veterans and do a total rebuild
Take your cap hit on Cousins and plan on being good in 2-3 years
That is what the Eagles did with Wentz

jbusse -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/21/2023 9:33:51 PM)

There is hope for quickly turning around the defense. Zimmer took the defense from 31st in 2013 to 14th in 2014. Still, the lack of talent plus the salary cap issues would seem to point to 2024 as the best case for a competitive defense. I'm looking forward to seeing how Kwesi takes on the challenge and whether his analytical approach is effective.

I'm fine with just letting Cousins play out his one remaining year. I wouldn't go crazy on signing free agents. In fact I'd be moving on from most of our current over 30 defenders. It will probably result in 6 or 7 wins next season. It is what it is. No more kicking the can down the road.

Philly runs it right up the middle with ease.

Magnifies the importance of having NFL caliber players in the trenches.

Bradbury needs to go. If they re-sign him I'm pretty sure I'm going to find something else to do on Sundays.

I'll take plan B.

Either way, you need to have a plan. So far, I've seen nothing that seems to resemble a game plan that involves getting younger or more competitive.

It's easier to run up the middle when the quarterback has the option on every play to run wide. Part of what makes Philly's running game great is a mobile quarterback willing to take off and run. Hurts had 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.

Our quarterback is a statue, or close to it.

I think if we were to do a rebuild Cousins maybe would wave his no trade clause. Otherwise it's pretty difficult to rebuild with no draft picks and cap space.

Good point. They have to cover the whole field.

Hurts had 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He was tied for second in the league in touchdowns rushing.

In fairness, however, they are also good up front. It's the double whammy. They are strong everywhere on the offensive side of the ball. The Eagles have the power receiver in Brown, the gazelle in Smith and a very talented tight end in Goedert. It's the complete package.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/22/2023 7:42:11 AM)

What a difference a week makes. And hopefully eye-opening as well, for some of you. After last night's game it is pretty apparent the Vikings are a long ways from being a Super Bowl contender.

The Vikings were outplayed by the Giants. The Giants were mauled by the Eagles.

Without significant upgrades on defense next season, the Vikings will be hard-pressed to win seven games.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/22/2023 7:55:45 AM)

Philadelphia is a perfect example of how great a defense can be if you have great players on the back end. They are still making old guys like Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham look competent.

Darius Slay, CJ Gardner-Johnson, James Bradbury and Reed Blankenship were the stars of that game last night. Completely dominant.

The upcoming season is a lame duck year regardless. Yet it can be valuable nonetheless to begin building an identity, a demand for high standards, and replacing age with youth.

The owners and GM need to be honest with the fan base and stop with the "competitive rebuild" shit. Then again, the Wilfs are documented crooks from their real estate days so I can't expect much from them. And if some fans are gullible enough, so be it. But where are all the honest conversations and transparencies Kwesi blabbed on about? The only honest thing I've heard from him is "Cine is improving on special teams.", and even that was misguided spin about his top draftee that couldn't sniff the defensive side of the field.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/22/2023 8:02:23 AM)

Jonathan Gannon made a lot of money last night. If I were looking for a young coach he'd be at the front of the line. You can have Sean Payton and his high price tag. Dennard Wilson is moving up quickly as well.
