QUOTE: What to know: The Vikings are 3-1 even though their offense and defense, overhauled in the transition to new coach Kevin O'Connell, are very much works in progress. Sunday's game in London was won by their special teams -- place-kicker Greg Joseph kicked five field goals, including what proved to be the game winner from 47 yards out -- and was sealed only when Saints place-kicker Will Lutz hit the upright and crossbar from 61 yards away. Meanwhile, the offense has been disjointed and has struggled to get snaps off before the play clock. And the defense has given up huge chunks of yards at inopportune times.

Is quarterback Kirk Cousins going to be able to sharpen up in this offense? Cousins had a decent line Sunday, completing 25 of 38 passes for 273 yards, and made the key pass in the game to set up the game-winning field goal. But he missed receiver Justin Jefferson open twice in the end zone and has looked uncomfortable in the pocket in this new scheme. -- Kevin Seifert

cousins was roughed-up plenty, even when he wasn't getting sacked...the vikes were far from dominant, but came up big when it counted...we are a work in progress...victories like the last two could give us a home game in the postseason....

if we converted back to a 4-3 defense i believe it would immediately pay dividends - we could play asamoah as an olb and it would strengthen our defensive tackle position by giving us more depth...i don't think hunter is comfortable as an olb edge rusher - and he's possibly our best player on defense....

i can see the vikes letting cook go and extending mattison on a 3yr/10mm contract this offseason....

I agree on the 4-3. I'm not a against changing the a 3-4 or mixing in a little from time to time, but it doesn't match our players strengths right now. I'd like to see Asamoah's speed on the field more too.

The big key to going 3-4 is stopping the run; it seems to be doing the reverse.

You need a beast in the middle. We don't have that.

'I still can't understand how the brass didn't grab Jordan Davis, especially considering they were planning on moving to a 3-4. I get it resources were tied to the DT position but everyone knows the key to a 3-4 is the middle clogging DT.

I would trade both Cine and Booth for Davis today.

yes, but would you have made that trade Saturday?....

Fwiw... almost everyone was against it the night of the trade.

I know I was...not quite as vehemently as others

i hated the trade out of #12, and still think we were robbed...that said, i wanted jameson, who might not play until who knows....

Yep, this is what I wanted too.

That trade was one of our worst. Not as bad as the Hershel or Moss trade but we got fleeced and missed out on talent, imo

I'm in Europe, so i went to sleep before we would have picked at #12...when i woke up i was shocked with what had transpired - i kept expecting to find more trade-back picks, maybe something for 2023, but nothing, i was dumbfounded - it was a very weak trade back - and with a divisional foe....

LOL, same... at first it was like, no, they don't have all the picks listed or there is a mistake. After that, knowing better, I was telling myself maybe it takes a while for any 2023 picks to sort of process into the trade.

Who knew that ultimately it could have merely been attributed to a new GM deciding to show everyone how smart he was. Actually I liked the concept of trading down and getting into the high second round range, liked the player (Booth) too. But we didn't get enough back. The people who were all giddy were Kwesi and the entire Lions staff.

It is what it is, and it will take a couple of years to see how things pan out.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/4/2022 8:19:13 AM)

The Vikings porous run defense helped Latavius Murray get a RB position with Denver.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/4/2022 8:27:41 AM)

Power Ranking 9.

GB 4

So a team we smashed and 4 teams with worse records (2-2) ahead of us. Makes no sense.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/4/2022 8:33:17 AM)

PFT even dumber posting us at 14.

meh

9-14 feels about right to me, right now

IF we can get Kirk back to playing at Kirk levels, and improve D a bit, i think we could be higher

YMMV

drviking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/4/2022 8:49:40 AM)

GB 4 seems high, but they get a lot of historical credit for better or worse, and historically with Kirk, 9-14 feels about right

Lends credence to the theory that our record isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Heck, look at your last two posts in the Gameday thread:

It took a fluke and some help from the refs to barely beat an injured weaker team. With all the preset excuses I guess each win is somewhere between a surprise and a miracle.

Why should we br 4-0? We got completely outclassed by Philly. We're lucky we're not 1-3 as we've only played 1 good game.

Besides, power rankings and such are just a way to fill content.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/4/2022 10:09:31 AM)

The thing I worry about is the Vikes haven't have the game where they seem to hit on all cylinders. I know we have more talent than the Chilly days but it reminds me of his first year.

The ST and OLine have looked great in all 4 games. We seem to play smart on the penalty front and outscoring opponents at the end of each half and as a bonus it seems we have had in edge on the coaching side in 3 of the 4 games.

Not the 2009/1998 juggernauts but they seem to have improved on the meh 2020-21 nots.

JMO YMMV

Probably their worst game, I am not concerned (except Bradbury), but I will not overlook a below average performance for 60 percent of the line

Todd

I disagree on Pickett and his deep ball, just watched a few highlights and had a couple of 50 yarders that were right on the money.

What I like most about Pickett is how quick he looks, looks like the opposite of Kirk, Kirk looks like he is slow at thinking and passing, Pickett seems to see things quicker.

Pickett also looks quick in his debut against the Jets, just made one ill advised throw that was a little high. I expect he will struggle against Buffalo, but he will be good by the end of the year, provided he stays healthy.
