Another example is NBAers knocking down 10 three-pointers in a row in practice. The pressure of routine game situations, let alone a putt, kick, etc, to win a championship, are what makes sports great.

But when you are not meeting in-game expectations on a fairly consistent basis, it's time to go.

Plain and simple we need a new kicker

Golf Digest: On Thursday (4/2016), after Ernie Els tried to explain how he had six-putted from three feet on one hole and then missed a series of mind-boggling short putts on others, he described his condition as if there was some kind of "short" in his brain.

"I can go to that putting green now and make 20 straight 3‑footers," Els said after the round. "And then you get on the course and you feel a little different and you can't do what you normally do. So it's pretty difficult."

-- does our guy have the yips?

- prob made 20 extra points in a row in practice last week more than a few times, too

What's troubling is that Joseph is struggling indoors.

wait until Chi and GB late in the season

Maybe Joseph will focus better out doors, just like he focussed better with sleep being thrown off playing in England.

joseph this season....

in london, missed an extra point late in game to keep the score within 3 points....

in Minneapolis, missed an extra point late in game to keep the cardinals within one score - 8 points....

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2022 12:08:46 PM)

The Vikings converted $1,869,444 of OT Brian O’Neill’s base salary into a signing bonus, creating $1,495,555 in cap space, per source.

Minnesota was tight on the cap. O’Neill has been outstanding once again this season.

Like Ernie maybe he'll get over it by then

But the moments aren't going to do anything but get bigger from here on out. It's tough spot for whomever is making the call.

He'll prob kick a game winner in the NFCCG with his next team

Back in the Jeff Diamond era that was considered a masterful move. Now it just says there is no cap space.

i wonder if kwesi is thinking low budget free agent - sheldon, where are you?....

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2022 2:43:25 PM)

Sheldon or Suh ? Sheldon make more sense ?

They must be wanting to do something, and more DL depth makes the most sense.

Unless they are trying to sign OBJ ?

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2022 3:27:46 PM)

Don't want OBJ. This is like his 3rd torn ACL. If you think Theilen is slow OBJ will be looking like a sloth.

Suh wants too much money. Richardson might be the prudent move.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2022 3:35:45 PM)

I think Richardson would be a nice pickup, as long as he is in shape.

Did Chuck Knoblach ever get over it? Arguably Sergio Garcia got over it, Based on his 30-40 seconds sitting over his next shot, which was arguably the most painful 30-40 seconds sports of sports viewing. Can you imagine the relative dynamic "microseconds" that involves the multiple factors in kicking a FG in the NFL? Short of harping on on the obvious stats of FGs made vs FGs missed, well everybody's an expert. BTW Ricky I think you know me enough that I'm just throwing some thoughts out there, not trying prove anybody right or wrong.

Depth

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/6/2022 7:13:34 AM)

RG Ed Ingram

From a scrimmage standpoint, no starter on either side of the ball has struggled more than rookie right guard Ed Ingram.

Seen by some analysts as a reach of a pick when he was taken in the second round out of LSU in April, Ingram beat out veterans Jesse Davis and Chris Reed in training camp for the starting job. Even for a rookie getting his first taste of NFL action, it's been a rough go.

There are 42 NFL guards that have played at least 400 snaps this season. Ingram ranks 34th out of that group in overall PFF grade, but he ranks 41st in pass block grade. He has allowed 28 pressures, second-most among all offensive linemen and five more than the next-closest guard. He's allowed six sacks, per PFF, which is tied for second among all players and two more than any other guard.

In seven games this season, Ingram has had a pass blocking grade below 37 five times, including an abysmal 16.9 grade against the Cardinals. He also allowed season highs in sacks (2) and pressures (6) against Arizona. Ingram is legitimately a good run blocker, but he's in the Dakota Dozier, Dru Samia, and pre-2022 Garrett Bradbury range as a pass protector right now.

That's a major weakness for an offense that is basically firing on all cylinders everywhere else. It's one that opposing defenses will continue to exploit, potentially with drive-changing plays, until Ingram improves or is replaced.

Vikings coaches haven't publicly said anything about being concerned with Ingram's play, but it's undoubtedly something they've noticed and discussed. Unlike at kicker, there's a clear possible replacement on the roster in Reed, the journeyman veteran who played for the Colts last season. Yes, there's a reason why he lost the training camp battle and has been inactive every week, but he also has 29 career starts for a reason.

The Vikings still believe in Ingram's potential and hope he figures it out. But in a season where the focus is winning a Super Bowl, do they have time to wait for that to happen? I'm not sure they do. If it were up to me, I'd be seriously considering a move to Reed or someone else — Blake Brandel? Austin Schlottmann? — at right guard.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/6/2022 8:06:33 AM)

In addition to Nailor's one career catch being outside of the U.S., the passer wasn't Kirk Cousins.

That sentence took the pro-Reed argument south in a hurry, especially when he blasts Dozier (23 starts).

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/6/2022 8:28:14 AM)

I think a hard reset for Ingram is needed at this point. Otherwise he could be reduced to a puddle of water after Buf and Dal dlines.

Not sure why Reed hasn't even been active. You would think he'd be the top G sub if either got dinged in a game. Esp considering how well he filled in last year in Indy.

What is a hard reset?

He apparently played "dismal" after the bye so time off didn't help.

I do! It's a buzz kill you gave up your tickets. I always felt like I'd probably get to one more game some day as long as you had 'em. And I appreciate all the times I was able to sit with you - never a dull moment. I'm going to wait for Bill to ask me to go the next time he visits the TC now.

And I do get the dynamic, the microseconds involved in a FG. If most remember, it was a huge concern around here when we switched punters and was he going to cause problems with the hold. Then he turned out to be pretty good at punting and our concerns went away.

I was optimistic we got a kicker with all the camp reports on how they finished well in the kicking drills at the end of practices (kinda of live but not like 60,000 fans live), wasn't preseason good (?), then wham!

The odds of this organization having fg problems for as long as it has has to turn ... I mean, even the stupid Cubs won a world series - things don't last forever.

Washington has a pretty good DL, so maybe today's game will help with any decision.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/6/2022 3:15:43 PM)

NFC North Standings
Vikings 7-1
Bears 3-6
Puke 3-6
Lions 2-6.

Vikings lead the division by 4.5 games and own all tie breakers.
Marty still expects the Puke to win the Division with a 13-4 record.
Don't try to convince him that a 3-6 team can't go 13-4. He won't understand.
