To me, a win today would be big.
You start out with 2 wins, then finish! Screw walking away with, " Well, we went 2-2 v. the Yanks.
Plus stick it to 'em for yesterday's BS!

TJSweens -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (4/16/2023 1:42:35 PM)

Lopez against Cole. Should be a good game. It would be awesome to take 3 of 4 in Skankee stadium.

Great move. This locks up a top of the rotation pitcher through his prime years. Lopez currently leads the AL in starts and strikeouts and has a 1.73 ERA.

But we'd be better off with a slappy who can't play defense, according to some.

Looks like German got caught doctoring the ball and was allowed to continue for some reason. Rocco got tossed for arguing the point.

is it any wonder umpires are loathed?

You could read the umpires lips before the 4th..."I told you to wipe it off".

Has there been any formal explanation by the league as to what happened there?

Crickets...followed by sweeping under the rug.

Any other team that pitcher doesn't pitch again that game.

But a Yankee, in Yankee stadium? Pitching well? Bah. no big deal.

You talking about the slappy with a 1.000 fielding percentage for the season right now?

He's 29-32 with a 3.83 ERA. Is that the price tag for a below .500 pitcher?

He is a player that breaks down after about 80 games due to knee that won't get any better.....happened the last two years.

Also the Twins top prospects Lewis, Lee, and Julien all can hit and can play second. Also Farmer and Gordon on the current roster can play 2nd base better than Arreaz.

Starts is an irrelevant stat when you are 2.5 weeks into the season. His strikeout and ERA numbers have been solid so far. However, as competition has risen, so has his ERA. It's gone up every game since his first start.

Unfortunately, for Lopez, he has to be nearly perfect with this lineup around him. With a .230 team batting average, don't expect him to be above .500 for any extended time. They are three sticks away from playing for anything important. The second best average on the team is .268.

So is fielding % after 13 games in the field.

To a much lesser degree. Arraez has had 62 total chances (42 assists). ZERO errors. It's a small sampling, but not irrelevant.

When you are 2.5 weeks into the season, total starts is completely irrelevant. It all depends on the 30 teams' pitching rotations. He could be first today, and 15th by the middle of the week. He's basically stayed healthy for 2.5 weeks, and is tied with 33 others for the most starts.
Congratulations!

What would you say if I told you Polanco, Kirilloff, Gallo are set to return soon and Lewis early June....some of the best hitters on the team.

Lopez went up against Cole who is paid 2 to 3 times more than him in Yankee Stadium where many fade....cherry picking Brad.

I don't know how many times it can be said that the Twins and Marlins dealt from a position of strength to address pitching and both teams look to be winners from the articles I have seen.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (4/18/2023 11:02:37 AM)

Arraez is doing well

Pablo is doing well

Pundits of the sport are all saying this is one of those rare trades where it truly worked great for both teams.

Pablo has ace level stuff. He's pitched very well for us and his win/loss record should never be a consideration (we've talked about how useless wins/losses are to evaluating a pitcher).

Arraez did one thing well. get hits. I would rather have not given him up. but we did and we got good return for him (Beyond Pablo we got a pretty good prospect too and a throw in guy) Arraez couldn't field a position to save his life and doesn't steal bases etc. all he does is hit the ball a lot. Doesn't even draw a lot of walks. He was VERY GOOD at getting hits and again, I was sad to let him go.

Judging this based on 2.5 weeks is foolhardy. It's way too soon, but early returns are that Pablo is pretty damn good for us and Arraez has been pretty damn good for them.

David Levine -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (4/18/2023 11:50:18 AM)

Again, I'm not going to cry about losing a guy who hit .316 last year.

Sure he was the batting champ, but the worst one in years.

In that case, the fact that his zone rating and range factor are below league average is also relevant.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Twins 2023 Season and Game Day Thread (4/18/2023 5:09:07 PM)

I have a much higher opinion of Arraez than most in here. He was the guy I wanted up in just about any situation. He's off to an even better start this year. I hope he has a monster year.

Lopez is also off to a great start and I hope he has a monster year. We needed pitching to compete and so far look like we are getting it.

Time will tell who won the trade, but we definitely need better production from the lineup. I lost faith in Kepler last year and remain very concerned with Kirilloff and his wrist issues. Hopefully Lewis will be a productive run producer when he gets the chance.

I was a fan of Arraez at the plate. His eye and his ability to make contact on just about everything was very impressive. If he could've been slotted in as the everyday 2B I wouldn't have had a problem with him being on the team. I did not like him at 1B. Too small and no power. I love that we got a potential ace for him and a couple of prospects. Luis had 1 tool. It was a very good tool, but I'm glad we sold high on him.
