Nate -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2023 4:23:29 PM)

I liked the Risner signing if nothing else because they at least had to publicly admit that the IOL was bad.

Akers, while a great buy for almost nothing, I can't imagine would move the needle much since the problem is the IOL. He's a decent player though, but I don't know why we're adding shovels when we need road graders. TEs don't count as graders, they are quasi bobcat like.

Having 6 safeties is an abomination, though if we look at how bad Cine must be doing, and how old Smith is looking, maybe we do need that many. The 22 draft is just a complete disaster.

Lots of parity in the NFL right now. We could easily be leading the division and having much more positive conversations. As it stands it seems like we're still on the path of competitive rebuild and won't get an end of year trophy or cool new toys next year. More socks and underwear in our stockings.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2023 5:24:17 PM)

Several posts kind of blow off the Akers acquisition while saying we need this and that (IOL most closely related). That's true, but there is nothing wrong with taking low cost flyers elsewhere, like at RB.

For months much of the board was clamoring for Risner. Well, we got Risner. Outside of a list of available FAs, I don't recall anyone stomping for any other guard or any center. If there is that much in-season angst about upgrading the OL, just who are those magical beings?

Was really hoping to see Nailor get some of KJ's looks, especially with the drops lately...

Oh great! We get a guy averaging 1 yard per carry

Small sample size. I liked Cam Akers before. He's young and I think talented. However, since the Rams soured on him maybe something is wrong. I hope it took a 6th round pick or less.

We gave a 6th and they gave us their 7th in 2025.

That doesn't seem like a whole lot. How 'bout numerical order in what he is costing us against the cap? I assume that number isn't too high on the list is it?

Overthecap and Spotrac are two sites that have cap info.

I appreciate the info.

I was actually trying to be rehtorical in the sense that i wasn't greatly interested in the answers as much as stating, "this guy can't be costing us much so why negativity about the signing?"

Not stated as direct or well as, "there is nothing wrong with taking low cost flyers elsewhere, like at RB," but I think I had similar thoughts. ;)

I think they did it to get out of the contract. Draft picks didn't matter.

The draft exchange for Akers means little, shouldn’t effect draft maneuvering next year … which should be priority one for this franchise.

To me at least, feels like Gaskin was signed to address Nwangwu’s health / Chandler’s effectiveness (odd in Sept.) … while Akers is more a starting rotation guy (odd in Sept.).

Not likely but in a best case scenario, Risner sets off a nuclear fission chain reaction that slightly upgrades one G spot and mildly effects the C position. Thus creating a small tear or rupture in the defensive barrier that our legions of RBs can permeate through. (I think ‘penetrate’ too strong a word)

So you’re saying; we have to worry about risner’s G-spot?

We have to worry about both G spots and our C.

I'm glad we signed Risner ... as I said several times weeks ago, IMO it was a no brainer.

The law of averages almost prohibits him from being worse than Cleveland or Ingram (I'm not even sure where they're going to put him).

That being said, there's no guarantee if / when he's going to fit in. Not all FAs meet expectation.

I'm looking forward to seeing if / how much of a difference he makes.

We waited until he was willing to take less money. In an interview he admitted the reason he hadn't signed yet was he was holding out for more.

Edit: speaking of the interview (both video and text) ... he seems like a pretty likeable guy. Hope he's mean-spirited, vicious and sleazy on the field.

Edit2: he claims that he was holding out for more money 'early in the process'. Wasn't sure why it took so long to get signed.

Priority was resiging TJ and O'Neil....there wasn't the cap until the O'Neil was done.

I believe the O'Neil thing could have been done at any time (I don't think they even needed him to approve).

My guess is that this was the plan all along... wait til after season started and since Philly was on short week that meant week 3.
Hope Ingram stepped up... so you didn't need Risner.

It's early but I do get frustrated when even casual fans can see the glaring need to address OL and DL... and really, the Vikes answer was TE Oliver and DE Lowry.

You probably couldn't address every need this offseason... but banking on
- no real NT
- Cleveland/Bradbury/Ingram as interior OL

seems like putting blinders on

The early returns Davenport and Oliver are disappointing... hope they can turn it around.

Early returns on the Bradbury signing/resigning is the big issue moreso than the other 2. Schlottman is about the same player at little over league minimum.

Davenport hasn't played a snap yet and had a whopping .5 sacks last year. so I wouldn't expect much from him anyway.

Oliver has made some catches and done his job blocking....I would hardly call the early return on a TE2 disappointing.

It appears that another "high risk" Kwesi move (Davenport) DNP today will likely miss his 3rd straight game.

At this point in his career I think Davenport has missed more games than he has played.

Kwesi needs to quit shopping for players in the hospital.

Nothing to back it up, but I would guess Flores wanted him.

I thought that I saw number '0' on the field last week....

Despite the voices inside your head telling you otherwise, ur not going crazy 😜. I saw that too.

Gambled on an average (best year) center who had a back injury last year.

Yeah. running hasn't been good. One caveat though, Tampa has a very good run defense. and Philadephia one of the best Dlines in the game. It's not like we were running against the Vikings defense.

Davenport hasn't played a snap yet and had a whopping .5 sacks last year. so I wouldn't expect much from him anyway.

Oliver has made some catches and done his job blocking....I would hardly call the early return on a TE2 disappointing.

In regard to Oliver. while the running game has been disappointing it appears Oliver has been doing his job. Not his fault KOC isn't rushing the ball outside.

Not sure how or where to look it up but it would be interesting to see where each running play has gone (which side ect). Seems they mostly (like last season) have been up the middle which isn't utilizing Olivers talents.

Davenport signing was a bad joke. Guy has spent the majority of his career hurt. Not sure why kwesi thought that would change.

'history of injuries' is on kwesi's 'must-have' list....

To sum up, the early returns on Kwesi have been disappointing, last year's 13-5 record notwithstanding.

In spite of the fact we won 13 games last year and started out -6 turnover, huh? But i get it, 0-2 and nervous we cant pull out a win on Sun sucks
