Nobody has ever dug themselves out of so many holes in one season than the 2022 Vikings. Which is a beautiful thing. But those holes have to be dug first – the defense was clearly the main culprit ... the offense also limped along plenty in between volcanic eruptions.

Purple Daily did the research and I listened to the podcast a couple days ago so forgive me if my memory is off. If I'm wrong, i'm not making it up and it should be pretty accurate. They said we were 8th in first quarter offense and 1st in the fourth. Our second and third though were mid 20's.

Their conclusion based on quotes from the QB doc from Cousins and KOC:

1. He is very good at scripted plays
2. When it goes off script he's crap and balls up so he 'doesn't cost the team'
3. When he's down in the 4th he has to say 'screw it' and finally loosens up

Offensively, the 3rd quarter scoring was bad. We ended up 22nd, but for much of the season we were horrid.

https://www.si.com/nfl/vikings/news/the-2022-minnesota-vikings-have-a-third-quarter-problem

Week 1 vs. GB: Up 17 at halftime, lost third quarter 7-3
Week 2 at PHI: Down 17 at halftime, tied third quarter 0-0
Week 3 vs. DET: Tied at halftime, lost third quarter 10-0
Week 4 at NO: Up 6 at halftime, lost third quarter 7-3
Week 5 vs. CHI: Up 11 at halftime, lost third quarter 9-0
Week 6 at MIA: Up 7 at halftime, tied third quarter 0-0
Week 8 vs. ARI: Up 4 at halftime, won third quarter 14-13
Week 9 at WAS: Up 4 at halftime, lost third quarter 7-0

Excluding ARI, that's six points in eight games.

Half-time adjustments are a big problem.

And that's against a lot of bad teams. And teams like GB DET not playing well at the time, Mia with their 3rd QB, etc. The shocker is 0-0 against PHI although they may have been too dominant in the first half for their own good.

2 TD passes, 13 sacks, and a 77.2 passer rating in the 3rd quarter last season. No killer instinct. Just “doesn’t want to screw up”.

https://www.nfl.com/players/kirk-cousins/stats/situational/

He's definitely not wired for the first/third qtrs versus the second/fourth qtrs.

Definitely seems to favor coming from behind versus getting on top. Put that in your stinking Netflix series!

Spielman and Kwesi have doomed the defense as much as the coaching.

Spot on. Both regimes have failed miserably drafting CB's (high picks too) and have completely neglected the dline. SF and Phil (class of the NFC) address the trenches early and often every year in the draft. Meanwhile we haven't spent an early pick on the dline in over a decade (Sharif Floyd 2012). Both regimes seem way more interested in the "sexy" pick vs building the team from the inside out.

Kwesi inherited a Spielman mess.

Spielman doled out contracts to Thielen, both Dalvins, and Kendricks that totals 20 million of dead cap for 2023 in addition to Harry. Kwesi is responsible for 3.3 on Zed and the reworked Kirk contracts but he also had to deal with 2022 Dead cap for Barr, Pierce, Rudolph and Gladney totaling 19 million in 2022.

That's absolutely true. Although for some reason, he extended the mess by a year. And fortunately for Kwesi, Spielman added some decent players on the team to complement his TEs.

I bet he was hired to be competitive versus total rebuild so not sure if it was his choice.....I don't know if they could have cut Thielen and Kendricks a year sooner; but the Zed signing hurt some in 2023 as will the Kirk restructure after this year.

You also have two coaches who really aren't interested in tanking (KOC and Zimmer) with the second one not enthused about playing rookies so that added to the cluster of a full rebuild or even a mild one.....

Sure seemed he was trying to leave a cluster but I think some of that was Zimmer; even though Zimmer and Spielman didn't get along that was on 3-4 players; that was their combined roster.

Same applies to KOC/Kwesi....where we are in 2 years is all them.....there is still a big pile of stink left from the Zimmer/Spielman era that is hard to transform in a year.

The thing I am worried about now is the rumored jockeying on Jefferson and of course what will happen to Hunter.

we cut cb john reid - we've got an open roster spot - I hope we sign Marcus peters or a solid guard....

i don't think there's any way we can extend jefferson and not raise his cap hit - this tells me we should wait another year...or two....

hunter will be extended by next week....

Spielman's short-termism was to be expected. He knew there was a good chance that if he didn't have a successful 2021 season he was out. The Wilfs could have avoided some of those poor decisions if they had planned better in terms of Spielman's contract, e.g., fired him with two years remaining on his contract.

Agree. Spielman assuredly knew he was making decisions that would lead to being on the wrong side of the cap going forward, and he had no extra draft ammo for a defense that was going to be held together by duct tape.

You can look back....I never was for Rudolphs, Cook, AP, or Barrs contract. The Dead money for Harry, Thielen, Dalvin, etc. is all Spielman. Kwesi had to maneuver to compete with the mess.

I am not all anti Kirk contract like you and others---so not being as negative would make it look like that; there are tons of bad contracts to pin point.
