Just keep in mind, you and Sims could GUESS right or wrong. Its still a wild guess.

I don't think it's a wild guess. I really believe Simms is good at this.

Nobody picking Zach Wilson over Lawrence is good at this.

He’s in the same ballpark as kiper and zierlein and a bunch of others. l
do give him credit for being willing to go against the grain … like he did with Wilson and he’s doing this year with Nix and Maye.

Seems more like shtick than science.

As I’ve mentioned, I have a buddy who follows college football obsessively who completely agrees with him on Nix.

I agree. There isn't a free agent QB worth the investment and there is no way I'd trade for Fields. Maybe a cheap bridge like Wilson but really it just leaves the draft. A failure to draft one of the top QB's is a fireable offense. I've never had so little faith in a Vikings GM in my life. He just doesn't seem to have any "feel" for the job and I've been unable to identify or understand what his "plan" is to get the Vikings to the Super Bowl. Maybe I'm missing something and he's got a super secret plan to build a dynasty...but, that's just the fan in me hoping for the best.

I feel the same way. I'm afraid he's going to Frick this up so bad we will end up the cellar for years.

Can't screw it up like 2022...it is 2024 right?

That makes no sense.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/8/2024 10:11:44 AM)

I'm not saying that this is his "plan" because I'm not sure he even has one. But, playing devils advocate, we are setting ourselves up nicely. Hear me out here:

Don't sign KC's (and it's clear that KOC wants him back but someone is putting the brakes on that, it seems)
Don't sign Hunter

The latter will be short term pain but the long term savings on both gives us a huge cap pot for next year and allows us to start reinforcing the D this year. IF (and it's a big 'if') they can get the QB situation right, we are potentially looking at 1 blah year and a nice future.

Again though, this is all contingent on if he actually knows what he's doing. Which, I'm not sure.....

I've been saying that for months.

Actually, we can't afford Cousins so he is automatically out of the picture.

They could sign Hunter with some heavily backloaded-void years contract. But he's not signing for just $15 million as some have said. He's in the $20 million range. Basically, he is IMO out.

Everybody who does this will have some bad calls from time to time. He had Lamar Jackson over Sam Darnold. Stroud over Young. Josh Allen very high. Simms has a very good track record. I listened to his 2 hour breakdown of the top 6 QBs. It all made sense. Nix is odd because he was only called on to throw short passes in that Oregon offense and he did it incredibly well. Simms says he has enough arm to do everything an NFL team will need him to do. A real wild card.

Nix has to prove he's not Colt Brennan 2.0.

Gaudy college numbers (45 TDs, 3 INTs, 77%), but it was all screens and RPO. Average air on Nix throws was 6 yards. Everyone else was 9+.

I had read about the screen / short pass element too.

I have not seen him play. The general draftnik analysis has left me unimpressed. … although one talking head mentioned his off schedule completion % was best in class. Maybe affected by the RPO.

Unless your draftnik Sims or idolize Sims, I sense a lot of general lukewarmness.

How does Nix prove this? In college he did what Oregon asked of him. It doesn't mean he can or can't do everything else. Teams will need to work him out to see how he looks running their playbook.

At least get his name right Simms. I think he's a smart guy. I was down on Nix until I saw Simms breakdown on him. Now I would be just fine with the Vikings getting him, but not at pick 11. For what it's worth my QB order is Williams, Daniels, and then a coin flip between McCarthy, Penix and Nix, but I like them in that order.

Chris Olson -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/8/2024 6:03:06 PM)

kg, are you down on Maye like Simms says?

#6? or is he #3 to you, as you said the other three are a coin flip

Chris Olson -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/8/2024 6:26:24 PM)

i kinda think we'll see all 6 go in the top 11

i hope we are not the ones still taking a QB at 11, because it will feel way too much like the Ponder pick

but that is probably what will happen

Regardless of what Sims says ...

Williams, Daniels, Maye in top five ... sounds like McCarthy is moving up between 5-10 but it could be draft smoke ... Penix and Nix in the 20-30 range.

I don't think we can wait for the second round to unfold.

Probably can't get any of them at 42. I think Maye is going to drop. Vikings will have the option to pick him at 11 if we stay at 11.

Wowza, here is latest Mock draft that has the QBs going 1,2,3 (Williams, Daniels, Maye), then WR Harrison, then the VIKINGS trading up to #5 to pick McCarthy:

That could happen. It wouldn't shock me. I think Maye will fall, but he could still go top 3. I could definitely see the Vikings trading up to 5. I definitely prefer getting Penix at 30 as they project the raiders to do than moving up to get McCarthy at 5.

I agree this could be likely, and I hope it does

I think McCarthy doesn't get past the Giants at 6

No way Penix falls to 30, he won't make it past 11

Todd M -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/9/2024 7:46:47 AM)

The 1st hour of this draft is going to be epic.

I’m confident we’re shipping it to a team for someone. 3rd or 5th is my guess. It could fall a few different ways. I wish I knew our guys true pecking order. I’m sure they’ll say they got who they really wanted though.

Chris Olson -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/9/2024 9:40:32 AM)

I'm also convinced that Kwesi moves up to 3-5 to get his QB, because he wants that to be the defining move of his career so far

and it will be, good or bad

Murph -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/9/2024 10:01:27 AM)

I posted something similar in the prediction thread yesterday. I'll repost since it's relevant here too:

Just my gut feeling that Kwesi is feeling the pressure and makes a big trade up before the draft.

I think the Vikings will make a trade up into the top 5 of before the draft starts.

DN did a surprisingly nice job compiling a lot of info on all the top QBS:

Stats and Scouting Scuttlebutt on the Top QB Draft Prospects
What the stats and pros have to say about the top of this year’s QB crop

Top quarterbacks included here include Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr.

I like the comments on stuff that go beyond the stats.

Not the time to mortgage the future with a big trade up.

Todd M -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/9/2024 5:50:12 PM)

I wonder if Kwesi was referring to that when he was talking about a blue player. He was referencing Jefferson at the time who is obv pretty blue.

I thought it sounded dumb in reference to a blue chip player but shortened to blue.
