Nobody's trading up for MHJ or Alt, that doesn't make any sense to me, even though they both look to be incredible prospects. The cost for getting into the top three is too high to not take a QB. The first three picks are going to be QB's.

Is whoever left going to be worth it.

IMO no I don't think so at all.

JJ does not seem to be a high first round prospect to me. He will obviously go high but I think he's more suited to our 23 pick or the second round. Maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see it. I do think winning the championship and the talent at Michigan is clouding peoples mind on him , just my opinion.

I would trade up to 2 or 3 for Daniels, and could probably be talked into Maye pretty easily.

After that I'd rather have Penix at 11 than JJ at 5.

I don't see JJ making it to 11.

If we fail to get a QB by 11 (say Denver or Vegas trade up to 9 to poach Penix), I'd consider a flyer on Nix at 23.

My best somewhat educated guess is the Raiders want Penix, but Denver wants Nix. All reports are that Nix is perfect for Payton's system and they are likely to take him if available at 12. I wouldn't mind if the Vikings snipe them taking Nix at 11.

Did Oregon's WRs get so much YAC because of Nix's excellent, Brady-like precision ball placement ?

Yes, he's Tom Brady. Let's take him in the 6th round.

Nix is very reminiscent of Brady in the sense that his game was mostly quick, short, timing passes. He did have precision ball placement that very much helped his receivers get the most out of every reception..

Nix in college was a lot like Brady in the Pros? Still apples to oranges. Nix didn't go 5 wide and find the weaknesses.

Yes, he's Tom Brady. Let's take him in the 6th round.

Similarities Sweens. He was much better than Brady in College. It will require a 1st round pick to get him. I take it you didn't watch any film on him and you just want to mock the comment because it mentioned him in the same sentence as Brady. He has great ball placement.

He hasn't played in the Pros yet. We will find out how similar he is to Brady in the Pros when he gets to the Pros.

I'm pretty sure Brady's average depth of target is more than 7 yards.

The almighty ADOT. As Brad said the offense didn't call for Depth of Target. Nix ran it to perfection. When he did throw downfield he was very good at that also. I don't get the desire to take cheap shots at a talented player who has a chance to be the next Vikings QB.

TJ

Did you watch highlights of Nix, or did you watch Kurt Benkert's(sp?) breakdown ?

Benkert kept talking about how accurate Nix was, and even showed a few plays where the WRs dropped the passes, where he said a pro will almost always make that catch.

if we were to draft nix, we should draft some players that suit his game, i.e., rb's that are good receivers and short-range wr's....

Comparing anybody to Brady is foolish.

Brady was a special QB. He never quit working on himself. How he threw in college compared to a draftee this year is pointless unless they have the same brain, and drive that Brady had...and it's hard to think that any kid coming out of college is that driven.

marty -> RE: 2024 Draft (3/21/2024 3:34:02 PM)

So why bother doing any comparisons, even if a player is showing some of the same traits ?

So you find a QB that throws very accurately, you can only then compare him to an average NFL like Kirk Cousins ?

Do you think Purdy is a better comparison with Nix?

Id be suprised if a lot of these QB didn't have Bradys drive. How do you get to this point without it? They can't all be where they're at bc of incredible innate gifts.

Although I'd say the result of Brandy's success is bc of what he was born with.

Kirk is as driven as much as Patrick is, he just wasnt born with the same stuff

Brady's depth of target isn't important as he was no where near his ceiling (especially when you are talking goat/unicorn status)----Nix is one of the older QBs and only 2 years younger than Darnold. If you are talking Mahomes he was drafted around when he was 21---that would be more JJ than Nix.

I was dismissive of Nix like a lot of people are at first. I'd heard the limited arm talent line that so many parrot and thought it must be true. Then I actually watched him in several evaluations and all my concerns about him went away. He doesn't have a cannon for an arm, but it's really strong. His ability to pull plays out of his ass is also really good. Honestly I don't see one thing about him that's not to like. There's a lot to like about McCarthy also. The biggest being how young he is and the potential for more improvement than Daniels, Penix, and Nix. McCarthy does have a cannon arm. Daniels is better right now. Nix and Penix are probably better right now, but given the choice between McCarthy and those 2 I pick McCarthy. I don't pick him over them at the cost of one or more FRPs.

I think Purdy is a better comparison to McCarthy.

Do any of us believe that the 49ers almost won the Super Bowl because of Purdy? Or is he just an OK QB that is good enough to win a Super Bowl with a great team.

NFL beat writer mock draft 2.0: Vikings, Broncos trade up into top 10 to grab QBs
The Athletic NFL Staff
Mar 21, 2024

The 2024 NFL Draft is just five weeks away, and the jockeying for the top quarterbacks remains this year’s buzziest topic.

Once again, we gathered our NFL reporters for a virtual mock draft, with each representing the team they cover. And once again, teams in need of a quarterback were willing to pay a huge price. Two of our GMs traded up into the top 10 to grab their quarterbacks of the future, while another team moved back up into the late first round to go after its own.

3. Minnesota Vikings (from NE*): Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
Trade: Vikings trade No. 11, No. 23, a first-round pick in 2025 and a second-round pick in 2026 to the Patriots for No. 3.
Look, climbing this high and parting with three first-rounders is not for the faint of heart. But if you’re going to swing, why not swing big? The Vikings’ connection to Maye is well-known: Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown coached him at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C. But even before McCown, Vikings scouts had eyed Maye for several years. He may need some time to develop, but that might align perfectly with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s views on what a young quarterback needs to become successful. Minnesota has an experienced QB room and loads of skill players. Now’s the time to try to find its quarterback of the future. — Alec Lewis

--------------

Patriots took Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State at 11 and Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas at 23.

QBs went:
01: Bears, Williams
02: Commanders, Daniels
03: Vikings, Maye
08: Broncos (trade up) McCarthy
21: Raiders (trade up) Penix

Nix was not drafted in the 1st round.
