Finally we look to be clearing huge contracts and dead money that have been holding back this team for years. We may suck for a season or 2 but at least most of our cap space won't be wasted on guys no longer with the team. I'm not sold on our drafting ability, but at least we now have a chance to build a good team without having 50% of our money going to a few players.

Yep. Sort of step 1 of the rebuild. A year late but better than never happening.

Step 1 happened last year with Thielen and Kendricks.

I meant that multi-year phase is basically concluded.

Teams can rebuild a team in a year if done correctly and tanking isn't ever the solution. This became a 3 year purge of bad contracts because of the stupidity of Rick.

What's your point? What team has rebuilt in a year? KC with their OL and having Mahomes? And you don't know whether tanking isn't ever the solution. We'll see how the Bears do.

But who cares with that speculation. THIS rebuild is a multi-year effort. It's already in year three and barring a miracle it will be a couple more years before the gaps can be adequately addressed. Not just addressed... adequately addressed.

They aren't tanking is the point and no it isn't a multi-year effort. The defense and offense are both top half just like last year and the year before. Injuries derailed 2023 not a tank or rebuild.

Cook, Thielen, and Kendricks were replaced and their replacements actually did as well.

Who said they tanked? Geez.

. We just spent over 120 million in FA. Total rebuild? No cap space? [&:]

Like I said, anything can be done when it's paid for in the future.

We didn't re-structure anybody to be able to sign these guys, did we?

Nope. So far no cans have been kicked down the road.

Right. Because the contracts haven't been set.

Who knows, maybe the team will pay for them in a responsible manner.

There is no way they can be active the first day on FA. No way. [&:]
Still not in full tank mode. DT and CB away from a top 5 defense

I didn't think so, but for you, again, anything is possible based on the contract structures.

We'll see how the other positions go.

Top 7 until injuries hit and finished top 12 last year.

What kind of BS numbers are those? They were 17th in points allowed and 16th in yards allowed.

Not to mention OCs broke the code on Flores. They closed the season giving up 27, 30, 33, and 30 points.

And before you blame injuries, they were not as bad as you claim:
Hicks weeks 11, 12, 13, 14
Murphy weeks 15, 16, 17
Wonnum weeks 16, 17

So:
- Week 14, one guy out
- Week 15, one guy out
- Weeks 16 and 17, two guys out

If a team gets pulverized because of 1-2 injuries, then it has a hollow roster and/or a scheme problem. Regardless, we were middle of the road based on the two key defensive metrics and not your cherry picked and made up stats.

Bump.

So now the D was "top half"? Not 7 or 12 as you said?

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2024 Free Agency (3/14/2024 12:25:42 PM)

The defense and offense are both top half just like last year and the year before.

Ok wait a minute.

Are you psychotic? You just said the defense was top half the year before last.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2024 Free Agency (3/14/2024 12:28:25 PM)

2022. 30th in points allowed. For Phil that is "top half".

David Levine -> RE: 2024 Free Agency (3/14/2024 1:22:11 PM)

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network is reporting that the Vikings are signing defensive lineman Jerry Tillery to a one-year deal worth up to $3.75 million.

Tillery is entering his sixth NFL season. He was a first-round pick (#28 overall) of the Chargers in 2019 and spent his first three and a half seasons with them. He was then waived in November of 2022 and claimed by the Las Vegas Raiders, where he finished the 2022 season and played in 2023 as well. The Raiders released him on Wednesday.

The 6’6”, 295-pound Tillery has appeared in 79 games in his NFL career with 39 starts. He has collected 12.5 sacks during his career along with 147 combined tackles. The hope appears to be that he will be able to provide some pass rush ability up front for the Vikings which is something that they sorely lacked in 2023 despite the blitz-heavy scheme employed by Brian Flores.

I read somewhere that he plays both inside and outside.

Not a Lowery or Bullard upgrade but a at least a new option.

Tom Sykes -> RE: 2024 Free Agency (3/14/2024 1:45:33 PM)

At least Tillery will help mask all the empty space.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: 2024 Free Agency (3/14/2024 2:04:00 PM)

Oh, and what has transpired since 2022 "isn't a multi year effort".

21 of 24 defensive players replaced.

15 of 20 offensive players replaced. QB, gone. Best defender, gone.

Per Phil, no rebuild here folks... and it's not a multi-year effort. Why? Somehow because we were top half on offense and defense in 2022 and 2023 [:-] [&o]

Evans and Blackmon as was Booth so we were down to our third/4th Corner at times.

Would you prefer Socialist China?

Almost half the defense.

Tomlinson - Lowry/Tonga
Kendricks - Pace
Za Smith - Devenport
Peterson - Murphy
Sullivan - Blackmon

And again, 21 of the current 24 legit players on defense are new since Kwesi began. 88% if you prefer numbers, cause you can't seem to follow words.
