It’s not about being ready. It’s about recovery.

Do you want a guy coming off an ACL to play his first two games 5 days apart? If he plays Thursday he has 10 days to recover after his first game.

Which is why he shouldn't play Thursday if he can't go today. If he can't go today bring him back after the Thursday game.

?

It's been explained from both sides.

It's good to know that our attitude is we're scared of the big bad Lions. Let's hope the team doesn't harbor that same attitude.

Seriously?

Now you’re just projecting shit that isn’t there.

Negative. It's been mentioned numerous times that the Lions would go after his knee.

By a couple posters. Not me.

I’m just being realistic, not emotional.

Well wouldn't it be better for him to play today in your case? Getting a full 2 weeks off after his first action?

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 12:07:26 PM)

Nah. I want him to keep playing once he’s back.

Richard Neussendorfer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 12:11:18 PM)

I guess an extra couple days rest is now bad after he resumes playing. [:D]

That would minimize roster changes as well.

Nobody wants to see a player held back due to an over abundance of caution. If our chemistry is janky today you’ll know why.

So far the team is perfectly happy with Hock being held back.

The one thing that seems constant. The longer a qb works with KOC the worse it gets.

I think that teams get film of QBs in our system and make adjustments.

This is the best Darnold has played in the NFL.

Hockenson will definitely help.

2 point conversion and failed 3rd down pass would be easier with him out there.

Richard Neussendorfer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 4:52:58 PM)

Bottom line is you gotta be able to put up more than 22 on offense against the Lions.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 4:53:29 PM)

Some perspective (?)

- Sam Darnold was 22-27, 259 yds, 9.6 ypa, 1 TD, 1 Int, QB Rating 103.5 His collective rating in the previous 5 games is 103.4, good for 7th in the league. Despite the stats, he wasn't impactful today and showed some of the old Sam Darnold. But did anyone reasonably expect more? Today or to date?

- The flawed IOL from long ago is still the flawed IOL.

- The cobbled together on the cheap DL from long ago is the same DL. Adding a new cheap face every year doesn't change that.

- KOC is burning timeouts at an all-time high. He has no clue. He will NEVER give up calling plays, that's his baby.

I think the team is doing well in relation to where it was a few years ago needing a tear down. Get some talent on both lines. IMO the real challenge will be to build out the CB position.

He had 2 really bad plays that killed us.

The INT never should've happened. He had a man wide open at the sticks to his left and he looked him off to go for a bigger throw to his right. Sometimes the safe throw is the right one.

His 3rd down throw before the Lions kicked the game winner should've been an easy 1st down, but he sailed it over JJ. I'm not sure if Addison being in front of the route threw him off or what, but that was a very basic throw he missed to put the game away.

His final throw over the middle was a bad decision, but we were in "we need a miracle" mode at that time.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 4:59:28 PM)

Well, 3 of the next 4 games are against bottom feeders so I'm sure visions of a SB run will return soon.

That's kind of my point.

He's really Sam Darnold* with the asterisk meaning Hey, we're not saying the old Sam Darnold has completely disappeared.

Chris Kluwe watched the new Vikings kicker and Detroit kicker. His comments on technique:

"Finally got a chance to see the Vikings’ kicker, he’s got a good motion. Keeps his hips square and drives to his target - he should be good for a long time. ... I think if your scouts actually understand how to evaluate someone’s kicking motion, it’s worth drafting a kicker. If they don’t, then you’re just rolling the dice based on vibes."

"Detroit’s kicker uses his hips too much, when his timing goes that’ll be it for his accuracy. ... [He can fix it,] but it’ll require an overhaul of his motion. I wouldn’t recommend changing anything during the season, but he should absolutely try to get it fixed in the off-season if he wants to last."

Based on Kluwe's past comments (if I remember them correctly), the Detroit kicker will likely be done in 3-5 years. And he could fall off a cliff at any moment. When the timing goes, he'll be instantly unreliable.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 6:28:43 PM)

He can't be any worse than the 49ers kicker. Dude just attempted an onside kick and the ball went (literally) 4 1/2 yards [&:]

Darnold’s stats were above average and he made a nice scramble or two. His TD to Jefferson was excellent. His effort on the 2-pt try was poor and so was various other times throughout the game. I think Darnold is outperforming the “Darnold standard” but I think he can get a bit better. “Decent stats “ is nearly meaningless. Give me one more interception and couple it with two or three extra brilliant throws in clutch parts of the game.

Good post David. It seems like our qbs come out like gang busters and then get the aggressiveness coached out of them. We gotta find a good happy median.

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 9:46:28 PM)

Went to the game with my son today.

Awesome start.
Frustrating middle.
Fun but disappointing end.

I lay this mostly on the coaching.
They had the bye week and I didn't see ANYTHING from our offense that gave detroit any trouble at all.
Timeout issues.
Challenge issue.
Tons of penalties.
Early on... 3rd and 1 in Viking territory... they go shotgun... made it... but I don't like that strategy a whole lot.
Chance to close it out with a drive... run,run,pass,punt... didn't love that either.

Lions played good coverage.
But so many long developing plays... where are the quick hitters when the line is struggling.
Where are the plays to put together a sustained drive.
This offense has too many play makers to not be able to get a couple first downs when needed.

Thought the defense was exposed a bit today... but kind of what we expected... secondary is not good enough to hold up without pass rush getting home.
They made some big plays when needed though.

The game was there for the taking...
Was hoping this could be a great team (and it's possible).... but I think they are just a pretty good team.

Probably need 1 DL, 1 OL and 1 CB addition to really be legit contender.
(or a whole lot of luck)

I don't think Darnold lacked aggresiveness today.
I think he made some poor decisions.
Several times threw to covered guys with receivers elsewhere wide open.
The INT was one of those.

We've seen ~10 quarters of mediocre Darnold.
That may just be who he really is.

Richard Neussendorfer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/20/2024 10:40:31 PM)

I'm more worried about the indecisiveness. He was patting the ball constantly. Our line held up for the most part. Can't expect 6 seconds all the time. Of course I'd still try Reisner in place of the drive killer.
