In short, he is a great cheap rental.

Yeap. If any Viking fan would have been told, before the season, that we'd be going in to this week at 6-2 (and 2 very winnable games coming up) with Sam Darnold at QB they would be thrilled. If not, they would be an idiot with over the top expectations.

Two very winnable games coming up followed by two winnable games. Cardinals will be on the road. Of course we have trouble at Chicago. 3-1 minimum.

And basically the only offense weapon added was A Jones (before the season). The IOL (mostly Brandel) has been a pleasant surprise.

I woke up and tried to recap without the emotions.

1. Reichard's situation is really worrisome. That dude has been lights out. Hoping for the best and if he was hurt, why is he bombing KO's still? Can't Wright do that for now? It's not like we are 'placing' them. Just bombing them out of the EZ.

2. The IOL is still a huge problem even if they don't ALWAYS have bad games. If we make the playoffs they will, most certainly, be a reason we don't advance.

3. The D was outstanding overall but the middle of the field continues to be wide open.

4. Even when they work (which isn't often) the screens are just a train wreck.

5. An occasional gadget play is ok but with JJ, TJ, JA and AJ ect.....we dont need to be running them that often. They mostly get blown up anyway.

2. Risner is a mystery. He said he's been healthy for weeks.
5. Yeah, skip the gadget plays. Besides getting blown up, they are a turnover waiting to happen. If you can't execute a simple screen play, you have no business trying razzle-dazzle shit.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/4/2024 11:22:21 AM)

How about a serviceable center. I'm sick of watching Bradbury fly through the air.

That would be nice as well, but not even close to the amount of impact DT Dexter Lawrence would make. Lawrence would have this team be a Super Bowl contender for the next 5 years, barring a coaching change.

I agree 100% with the opinion that Darnold is a great, cheap rental. This is what a great, cheap rental gets you through eight games:

155 completions on 223 attempts (69.5%) for 1900 yards. 8.5 yards per attempt. 17 TDs, 7 INTs. Rating - 107.8. QBR - 58.3

The same eight games from 2023 with the Kirko:

216 completions on 311 attempts (69.5%) for 2331 yards. 7.5 yards per attempt. 18 TDs, 5 INTs. Rating - 103.8. QBR - 61.0

Either Darnold is the bargain of all bargains or Kirko was overpayed by about 300%. Some fans were claiming MVP status for Kirko in 2023.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/4/2024 12:27:51 PM)

Add in Darnold's ability to escape and use his legs.

Probably a combo of both.
Also they are still working with Darnold on those issues....maybe he can improve on them?

The Vikings may be needing a new kicker and long snapper for the short term, Kevin O'Connell said. Will Reichard's right quad is still being evaluated, and long snapper Andrew DePaola will require surgery on his hand and could be placed on injured reserve. K/LS tryouts may ensue.

Tight end Nick Muse, who has been on IR with a hand injury, was the backup long snapper. It has been center Garrett Bradbury lately. O'Connell said they'll look for a full replacement this week, and that DePaola could return this season.

thebigo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/4/2024 6:00:09 PM)

I think Darnald may have some more ceiling available to him with the vikes this season, only a half season in with Addison missing about half of those games and hawkeson just coming back.

Bargain for sure. Stats aside, I've been impressed with his pocket presence and arm talent. Kirko couldn't have made that back foot laser to Addison (or even escape to the flat).

I think Slinging Sam (Vikes version) is JJM's ceiling, but time will tell. (And I'm always wrong.)

He's not eligible for Comeback POY. Is there a late bloomer award?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/4/2024 8:47:12 PM)

RE: Darnold. Just an opinion.

I was super high on his signing because I've always thought he's never had a real chance but was super talented coming out of USC. That said, the same 'risks' he had coming out are starting to become all too often.

1. He has enough arm talent to be a starting NLF QB.
2. His mobility in the pocket isn't upper echelon but..... He's not a 'running qb" but he can hurt you with his mobility.
3. He's a big/tough QB. He's not fragile at all.
4. He's bound to give you that "WTF are you doing" moment every game.

Point 4 for me is where KOC needs to reel him in. The fumble was a ridiculous call by the officials. Not on Darnold. The 2 INT's though [:-]

From what I remember about his time at USC was Caleb Williams lite. He can wow you but just does some really dumb ass shit that needs to get coached out of him.

Seems every game he is trying to force the ball in to double coverage when Addy is wide open. He just doesn't have good vision.

Vikings ARE active in trade talks today. One that is heating-up is a return of DT Dalvin Tomlinson. The biggest weak spots are DB and DT. Yes, we might need RB or OLine help, but don't think those are largely in play

I understand the need for a rental LT after the Darrisaw injury. But we only have 3 picks in next years draft and Kwesi has already began liquidating the 26 draft.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2024 9:08:58 AM)

Pass on DT and keep the draft stock. It's better depth but does he upgrade us over Phillips?

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/5/2024 9:12:22 AM)

For the love of god quit selling future draft picks for one year rentals..

Guessing Tomlinson would be an upgrade over Bullard and play next to Phillips

Hard to believe, but Pro Football Focus (PFF) graded Ed Ingram as one of the higher rated pass blockers on Sunday night, and Bradbury as one of the highest run blockers. However, the grades for pass blocking were terrible for Bradbury and Brandel, who we abused by the Colts.

Perhaps it amounts to nothing, but a Viking inquiry has been made to the Jets on Sauce Gardiner. One of our sources shared with us (no, we don't share source names, so believe what you like), & we do not know how much traction it would get. We don't think the Jets will trade him

Being Kwesi sux at drafting he's willing to morgage our draft picks for the balance of his tenure as Vikings GM.

We didn't need PFF to tell us Brandel and Bradbury had a bad night against the Colts DTs. any Novice could tell us that.

Funny thing was last week he looked off a wide-open Addison on 3rd down - safely past the sticks, to throw a pick into double-coverage.
