So, JJ being out for the year doesn’t really impact his career path much, as I stated in an earlier post. For 2024 however it does impact QB depth. If Darnold goes down, or let’s face it just sucks, a definite possibility, previously we could just stick JJ in, start the clock on him and let him take his lumps. Now we’re suddenly repeating the QB carousel of last year. Whee! What fun.

My exact thoughts. At the rate the team is experiencing injuries in the preseason, it may be over before the season even starts. If Darnold isn't very good and stays healthy, then they're really screwed this year because we saw what happened when Mullens and Hall played last year and they were both terrible. Let's hope for a Darnold redemption season or we'll be picking very high in next year's draft...it's a bummer to even be thinking about the draft at this point in time.

As opposed to being kinda screwed.

There is simply not enough talent when 100% healthy. With injuries, it's worse. Screwed either way.

As mentioned, maybe some unknowns will step up and replace the deadwood. Like what is James Lynch doing on the team.

I wasn't clear. If Darnold isn't very good, then they're screwed at the QB position because there is nobody behind him on the depth chart with any talent. I guess that screws the team too! Let's hope we don't have a repeat of the QB shuffle like last year. Basically, Darnold has to play well for the team to have any chance at all.

I want Heineke signed...scrapper.

We'd have to trade for him.

He's in the 2nd year of a 2/14M contract with Atlanta.

I don't want them to trade future draft capital on someone who is, well, a below average QB. It doesn't make sense for a rebuilding team like the Vikings. Avoid a trade like last year for Dobbs. It accomplished nothing. I sense they will just have to swim or sink with Darnold. A high first round pick could be traded away for more picks/established player(s) like the Bears did two years ago. It set them up very nicely.

Agree. If Darnold doesn't get it done, take the lumps and start to get ready for next year. We'll have cap dollars and a higher draft pick.

At least the ones we still have will be higher.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2024 4:42:19 PM)

I would think Darnold has to be as motivated as ever before to have a great year! I look forward to seeing how it works out. With JJ done for the year it sure has to change things at least a little bit whether he'll admit it or not.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2024 4:45:11 PM)

JJMcCarthy is out for the entire year?

Well that sucks.

But his talent is undeniable.

Anybody know an outstanding orthopedic surgeon, maybe at Mayo? That just might be able to “ like it never even happened” do the repair of the meniscus.,?
.

Chicken littles need to run into the basement and peck rat turds..

Roster cuts are coming and either Hall, or Mullet the mutt, will be cut.

After cuts are done..

There could very well be a veteran minimum, experienced guy, out there to fill the back up spot.

JfC.. can we at least wait and see what happens with Darnold to start the season,?

No?

There's really nothing to trade draftwise anyway but absolutely agree. Trading even one of the 5s would make no sense whatever.

We grin and bear it with Darnold. If he plays well ... that's great for us and him, that shows very well for O'Connell, keeps your playmakers engaged etc.

I prefer to have another journeyman backing up Darnold ... practicing before week one, than what we have just to have some offensive continuity. In case.

But its probably too late in the game for that.

Ryan Tannehill
Trevor Siemian
Blaine Gabbert
A.J. McCarron
Brian Hoyer

Ick! Yuck! Yech!

Preferable to Mullens? I think so. I'm sure its just the grass over there is greener thinking but signing someone the week before a game is no bueno.

IF the Vikings get the 1st pick, they might be able to pick up some picks with a trade down.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 9:49:22 AM)

Even with Mullens there is no way this team gets the #1 pick. Lets be real.

Darnold certainly could have a great season. Let's hope he's in the running for the league's MVP! Obviously, with his track record in the NFL so far, that seems unlikely to happen. But, it is "possible". I think they will keep both Mullens and Hall but if there if a decent veteran is cut it's possible they could go that route. We'll have to wait and see how it plays out!

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 1:49:05 PM)

I think the Vikings absolutely have a shot at the 1st pick, with a brutal schedule, and Darnold or Mullens at the helm.

Addison could miss some time, through injury and suspension. Hock could miss half the season.

IF JJ and or 1 stud defender gets hurt, this team is very much in the running for the 1st pick of the draft.

kevinemmer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 5:05:46 PM)

Matt Corral.....

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 5:32:05 PM)

Premise of two posts, back-to-back:

- Darnold certainly could have a great season. Let's hope he's in the running for the league's MVP!

- I think the Vikings absolutely have a shot at the 1st pick, with a brutal schedule, and Darnold or Mullens at the helm.

Matt Corral.....

Bye bye Hall. I know he tried but yeah, no.

Edit: Although, per an article Corral has never appeared in an NFL game. So who knows. What an exciting preseason shootout [&o]

Yep. Hall didn't work out. We have seen enough. Bring in another young guy who can maybe win a backup/3rd string job.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 7:34:44 PM)

Corral sounds like an enigma.

Lisfranc his rookie year with CAR. Made the 53 the following season but immediately released. Claimed by Pats, disappeared for a couple days soon after without saying anything, a lá Underwood. Released then added to practice squad but he never signed. Signed with UFL in Feb. and now us.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 7:40:17 PM)

Whatever. I assume there will be some more qb tweaking before game 1.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2024 8:38:15 PM)

Ugh. Don’t watch any UFL highlights if you want to stay interested.
