Nicely done!

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/13/2025 9:46:52 AM)

Two international games back-to-back, Pitt & Clev. They would have been road games so there is that.

That should be worth half of a game on our over and under wind total.

Steelers' fans travel well. How far is TBD. We should beat the Browns anywhere. But yeah, maybe that was the carrot for being the guinea pig.

Not a fan of int'l games. Certainly not when 'first ever' is involved. First ever to play two games overseas. First ever to play back to back overseas. In different countries. First ever in Dublin.

Mark Wilf is of course saying all the right kiss-the ring stuff.

what concerns me most is the condition of the field/turf....

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/13/2025 4:44:58 PM)

.
i was thinking...we could stay somewhere like oxford, take over a hotel a short walk to a football pitch for practice...set up a couple of large tents for a weight room and cafeteria, whatever...arrive on Tuesday after our sunday game in the states, early morning charter out of a local airport to Dublin (1hr) that sunday morning and beat the Steelers, returning to oxford that night...take a motor coach to Tottenham Hotspur the following Sunday (1hr) morning and beat the Browns...stay in the same place for two weeks in the UK and not have to pack, move around, set up....

Take over a hotel? Hey, when you can't buy out a hotel just take it over. Better make that 2-3 hotels.

Tents? These are not the 11th century Vikings.

Fly to the game the day of? The NFL nixed that in 1952.

1 hour via Motor coach? Probably 2 hours minimum unless those motor coaches are sports cars in disguise.

I don't know what they will do but it's not the NFL overseas version of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. And NO WAY the NFL let's them home base in England for the Dublin game, that's a slap in the face to Ireland.

Beyond that, it's a solid plan [8|]

I think we're set up to be the darlings of the league.

A little "Marty Memo" passed around to refs to help us with a little sway.

Plus - damn we have a ton of talent.

If JJM's skill level matches his work ethic...watch out!

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 4:57:48 AM)

Complete ownage. Never achieved before

Surely I'll get lots of responses.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 4:59:14 AM)

18/19 the most possible by a non admin.

Things are looking up!

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 5:28:45 AM)

I love the way JJM throws. Solid motion. No hitch

I think he is going to burst into stardom.

With his velocity and accuracy and our WR's route running there are going to be a lot of chunk plays.

And that's not even taking into consideration our OL is a strength now.

Not even June and I am sucked in.

I have a lot of faith in a guy that hasn't played a snap yet.

Usually I am a bit more cynical. But there is a vibe around this guy. He is the biggest question mark but for some reason I feel really good about JJM.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 8:48:57 AM)

JJM's arm strength is what might be his limitation. Scouting profiles appear to range from weak to rocket.

Seemed avg in the clips I've seen of him. Any thoughts?

It's been 15 years since the OL was even just adequate. Based on projected strength, on paper the OL is there with Edge. It will hopefully be real nice watching the OL move defenses backward instead of seeing a jailbreak meeting in the backfield.

Rocket.

And his footwork is good. And his delivery is tight.

Coming out of college his arm strength considered above average. Not rocket and not weak. KOC reportedly changed his footwork right away, which improved his strength and range. For comparison purposes, Darnold has a bigger arm.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 10:35:52 AM)

Darnold developed a hitch as the season went on. He lost power and accuracy.

Can't wait to see JJM sling it.

Predraft he recorded the 2nd best velocity in drills
Looked great in the preseason
Camp reporters said he was very impressive (more than Sam, which is Sam's best attribute)

He's more than fine with arm strength. Doesn't guarantee success but I'm not worried about that part.

Agree.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 4:18:57 PM)

Comparing the arm strength of Sam Darnold and J.J. McCarthy involves looking at their performances, scouting reports, and expert observations from their time in college and the NFL. Here’s a breakdown based on available information:
Sam Darnold
Arm Strength: Darnold has consistently been praised for his arm talent. During his time at USC and early in his NFL career, analysts noted his ability to make high-difficulty throws, particularly off-platform and under pressure. His arm strength was evident in his ability to throw deep balls with velocity, as seen in his 69-yard completion to Jordan Addison in 2024, where he delivered a pass 25 yards downfield without stepping into the throw.

NFL Performance: In 2024, Darnold ranked third in the NFL in Pro Football Focus’s "big-time throws" statistic (25), which tracks high-difficulty passes, often deep throws. He had the second-highest completion percentage on throws beyond 20 yards and was noted for his ability to fit balls into tight windows. Former teammates and coaches, like T.J. Hockenson and Kyle Shanahan, have compared his arm talent to elite quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford, emphasizing his ability to "flick" the ball with ease on deep throws.

Scouting Reports: Pre-draft analyses in 2018 highlighted Darnold’s arm as a strength, with the ability to make all pro throws, though his accuracy on deep outs sometimes resulted in fluttery passes. His arm strength was described as "average" to "above average" but highly effective when combined with his confidence and mobility.

J.J. McCarthy
Arm Strength: McCarthy was known at Michigan for having one of the strongest arms in college football, capable of throwing 60 yards downfield with accuracy. His arm talent was a standout trait, often described as generating "explosive" velocity with tight spirals and efficient mechanics. During Vikings OTAs in 2024, observers noted that his passes had more "zip" than Darnold’s, with the ball appearing to "explode out of his hand."

NFL Context: McCarthy’s rookie season was cut short by a meniscus injury, limiting him to one preseason game, so direct NFL comparisons are sparse. However, in training camp and OTAs, he outperformed Darnold in certain drills, going 19/21 with 7 touchdowns in one practice and 4/6 with 4 touchdowns in red-zone 7-on-7s. His arm strength was praised by teammates like Justin Jefferson, who noted his ability to deliver deep balls even when not immediately seeing the receiver.

Scouting Reports: Pre-draft concerns about McCarthy’s arm strength were minimal, though some analysts noted he struggled with touch on deeper throws and could underthrow sideline shots. His arm was still considered elite, with potential to develop further with coaching.

Comparison
Raw Arm Strength: McCarthy likely has the edge in pure arm strength. His ability to generate velocity with minimal effort and throw tight spirals was consistently highlighted in college and early NFL practices. Observers at Vikings OTAs specifically noted his passes had more zip than Darnold’s, suggesting a higher ceiling in raw power.

Functional Arm Strength: Darnold’s arm strength translates effectively in NFL game situations. His 2024 season showcased his ability to make big-time throws under pressure, ranking him among the league’s best in this category. His experience allows him to leverage his arm strength more consistently in live games compared to McCarthy, who has limited NFL tape.

Mechanics and Accuracy: McCarthy’s mechanics are described as more fluid and efficient, contributing to his velocity. Darnold’s throwing motion is quirkier, sometimes appearing off-balance, which can affect accuracy on certain throws like deep outs. However, Darnold’s accuracy improved significantly in 2024, with a 66.2% completion rate and a 102.5 passer rating.

Conclusion
J.J. McCarthy likely has the better raw arm strength, with his passes showing more velocity and tighter spirals in controlled settings like OTAs and training camp. However, Sam Darnold’s arm strength is more proven in NFL game situations, where his ability to make high-difficulty throws under pressure has been a standout in 2024. Without more NFL game tape for McCarthy, Darnold’s practical application of arm strength gives him a slight edge in functional performance, but McCarthy’s potential suggests he could surpass Darnold with more experience.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/14/2025 4:33:53 PM)

Sam's a bum.

Murph -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2025 7:55:24 AM)

I'm going to turn 63 during this season.

I remember all 4 super bowl losses, the Drew Pearson push, off and countless playoff heartbreaks. I haven't been optimistic as a fan since I was in Junior High school.

I've really set my self up for disappointment this and hopefully the next 5-10 years.

I have been this excited about the Vikings short and long term outlook since the mid 70's. It just feels different this year to me?

I'm going to be disappointed if we're not at least in the conference championship, even with the 5th toughest schedule.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2025 8:41:26 AM)

The last 3 years have all been similar wrt expectations.

Year 1. No one expected much. We exceeded expectations by a lot. Even with the 1st round fizzled

Year 2. No one was expecting much and we met the mark.

Year 3. Everyone was happy again as we very much exceeded expectations. But still fizzled in round 1.

This year's different. We now need to meet expectations. And most are going to pinpoint at or around NFCCG level to do that.

And that's super exciting bc we are legit in a SB window. You'd have to have a biased or ignorant take on them to not be seeing it.

I think this is set up incredibly well for JJM to succeed. With his mindset...no way he's going to let his self be the reason we don't stack a ton of wins.

This is the time.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/15/2025 9:00:11 AM)

So what are we looking at? Looks like 6 opportunities to play as the only game on at to the time. That's pretty respectable. And if JJM likes it that way...bring it on.
