Nice to see Donovan Jackson is officially the starter already.

He has officially cleared the lowest bar in the NFL.

Hey, He beat out all the other options on the team for LG.

Which is to say he is breathing.

Next hurdle, block real defensive linemen trying to kill your QB. Beating out the turnstiles that he was in competition against isn't saying much at all.

If you pay attention to the Skor North podcasts (I do) they are pretty certain that the #2 QB is not on this roster right now. Apparently SH and BR are "not the guy" and MaxB isn't ready yet, although, he's been the best looking. These aren't just blind guesses either. These guys are at practice everyday and they bring in the lead beat writers, sportscasters ect. They all agree.

I haven't listened to Skor North but I've read those comments from other web/podniks hanging out at practice.

It's all hyperbole right now, so hard to know but Howell/Rypien seems like pretty weak sauce for this roster. Yes Darnold came in as bust city last year but at least he was highly touted at one point before flaming out. And he wasn't dogging it in training camp.

As long as our HCs ego doesn't get in the way of continuing to look for upgrades, even mediocre ones (since we passed on the usual mediocre suspects in March).

I couldn't be happier with the offseason in general, the focus on the trenches ... I'm eager to see where this thing goes.

I heard the Defense was really dominant.........it should be actually all year.

Let's hope that defense wins championships! I'm pretty excited about the team we have built this year.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/8/2025 11:03:10 PM)

It will be interesting to see if Flores does most of the same things schematically, or if he does some different things because of the changes in personnel.

I assume there will be less blitzing, and wonder if he will do some things that he did in the past, like rushing 6, and then sometimes just rushing 3 to throw off the offense, but still have a pass rush rushing 3 because of better interior DL personnel.

BisonFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/9/2025 6:02:38 AM)

Finally game day! Can't wait to watch McCarthy and gang. Hope he has a good night and shuts up the non-believers. SKOL!

As far as I can tell, Cowherd is the only 100% non-believer out there. And that's probably just him begging for attention.

Everybody else is wait and see. Or should be.

BisonFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/9/2025 12:34:08 PM)

I know Cowherd has been spouting off and I think Russinni as stated us Viking fans will be disappointed. I guess who cares as long as we have a quarterback for the future. I think the defense will need to carry the team for a few of the first few games until the offense gets in sync.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/9/2025 2:06:09 PM)

Cowherd was a vocal Viking believer until we didn't resign his biggest mancrush, Darnold. He was always talking up JJM until that happened and then he turned against him. Pretty obvious and pathetic. He was always on the Darnold bandwagon coming out of USC and looked like a fool about it until KOC made him look like a passable QB.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/9/2025 6:55:15 PM)

I know it's expected that the defense will have to carry the offense early on, but I think it will go back and forth, with the offense sometimes exceeding expectations and carrying the defense.

The defense might not be in sync with the new interior DL, still some questions in the 2ndary, Ben Johnson seems to have Flore's number (at least with Detroit), Cincy is an explosive offense, the game at Pittsburgh could go down to one big play. It will likely be one of the defenses making the big play in Pittsburgh, hopefully it isn't Rodgers finding some error in the Viking's 2ndary.

nfrosty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/9/2025 11:00:21 PM)

Always good to get a win even in preseason. I wish we could have seen more of McCarthy. I though he did OK but still needs to fine tune his accuracy. Thought Howell looked better than what the hype was coming from training camp. Max Brosmer looked good. Definitely outplayed Rypien and should have earned the QB 3 title.

Zavier Scott looked very good running the ball. Ty Chandler looks to have some real competition here for the RB 3 position.

The only other game I caught was the Browns game. Sanders looked impressive. A little early to say but I got a feeling a lot teams are going to be kicking them selves in the ass for passing him up.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/10/2025 8:31:55 AM)

Rondale Moore to have an mri today. Was an over aggressive hip drop tackle as Moore was headed OOB's.
What a bummer. PS games can be dangerous when bubble players try to get noticed.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/10/2025 9:50:53 AM)

Everything about JJ was passable but just okay. He overthrew one receiver. Threw behind Addison on another completion. But he looked poised and confident. Ran for a first down (good decision). He did led them to points on a drive that started on the 12…but just 3 points. I will take this middle of the road result for 12 snaps of a meaningless preseason game. He came out of it healthy. See you in Chicago.

Howell looked like a capable backup.

I hope they keep Brosmer around at least on the practice squad.

Thought the same about JJ. Passable in preseason against not a lot of first teamers moves you forward down the path but impossible to say how much until he gets into real games.

I do like that his fun-loving demeanor seems to help his focus, not impede his competitiveness. There’s a chance, if he has the talent, that he could develop into something more than rattled icebox cousins or rabies eyes darnold. Didn’t see him trying to sneak out the back of the pocket by running in crop circles. So I’ll keep hoping.

Howell looked more solid than meaningless tc reports have been portraying him. Against scrubs but still, he has a chance to stick.

Brosmer is the new Sloter … looked ps promising.

Scott, as a converted wr looks so much more natural than Chandler - its not even close. I saw him whiff badly on a blitzer but with some more training … definitely a keeper.

They need to make him the 3rd string QB. Its just one game against end of the bench (at best) guys, but he showed a lot of poise and potential. He'll get sniped off the PS.

Rypien is 29 and has never been any good.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/10/2025 11:24:16 AM)

But Rypien looked like he was lost on the field on Saturday. He finished the game completing just 1-of-4 pass attempts for six yards in addition to getting sacked twice. It was not a good look for the future of his spot on Minnesota's roster.

Howell looked really good against the Texans this weekend as he finished the game completing 11-of-13 passes for 105 yards, and he was very efficient. Although he did not throw a touchdown pass, he looked very good moving the ball down the field and evading pressure.

But Brosmer also looked really good in his limited amount of time. Brosmer finished the game, completing 5-of-8 pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown toss late in the fourth quarter as he found Myles Price in the back of the end zone on 4th-and-goal from Houston's three-yard line and iced the victory for the Vikings.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/11/2025 6:48:26 AM)

Both of Howell's incompletions were where he threw the ball away to avoid a sack as well.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/11/2025 8:58:23 AM)

Max Chadwick

@CFBMaxChadwick
Highest-graded rookies from yesterday’s preseason action

1. OG Joe Huber, Vikings - 94.7
2. OG Willie Lampkin, Rams - 94.1
3. DI Deone Walker, Bills - 92.8
4. S Kitan Crawford, Cardinals - 92.5
5. CB Davon Ross, Titans - 92.3

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/11/2025 3:20:21 PM)

Unfortunate:

4h
Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison underwent season-ending neck surgery Sunday in Chicago, per sources. Mattison hurt his neck during Sunday’s game vs. the Bears, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and had surgery.

Could Brosmer end up pushing Howell for the 2nd string job ?

Doubtful, this year at least. Howell looked pretty good too. And he’s got more experience.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/11/2025 10:27:45 PM)

Howell has a history of throwing lots of INTs, and was bailed out by some great catches.

Brosmer was impressive that he still got a TD after having a close one taken away with replay. I didn't see it, but PA was saying he has a quick release. Maybe he is just another Sloter, or could be be more ?

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/12/2025 7:22:12 AM)

I watched every Gopher game last year and this is what Brosmer looked like to me.

He is very accurate and good at throwing through windows.
He makes quick reads and has a quick release.
He doesn't have particularly strong arm.
Physically, he is a little on the small side. He is fairly mobile.

Lack of a big arm and his age (24) probably kept him from being drafted. I think he will make the team. From what I have read, O'Connell and McKown both like him. If Howell continues to perform as he did in game 1, he will likely be QB2. Even if Howell face plants the rest of training camp and Brosmer continues to play well, the Vikings could look outside the organization for a backup. They may not want to go into the year with an unproven rookie backing up an unproven rookie.

Bottom line: Absent an unfortunate injury, Brett Rypien is toast.
