I watched every Gopher game last year and this is what Brosmer looked like to me.

He is very accurate and good at throwing through windows.
He makes quick reads and has a quick release.
He doesn't have particularly strong arm.
Physically, he is a little on the small side. He is fairly mobile.

Lack of a big arm and his age (24) probably kept him from being drafted. I think he will make the team. From what I have read, O'Connell and McKown both like him. If Howell continues to perform as he did in game 1, he will likely be QB2. Even if Howell face plants the rest of training camp and Brosmer continues to play well, the Vikings could look outside the organization for a backup. They may not want to go into the year with an unproven rookie backing up an unproven rookie.

He's exactly what you want in a 3rd string guy. Good Developmental QB. I think the depth chart is set already.

Howell has a history of throwing lots of INTs, and was bailed out by some great catches.

Context matters.

Howell was on a horrible team that threw the ball way too much.

He led the league in pass attempts, INTs and sacks.

He was a 23 year-old first time starter and he still was 5th in the league in completions, 15th in TDs, 13th in 1st downs.

There is talent there, but he was thrown into the deep end wearing cement shoes.

The somewhat surprising move is that the Vikings have waived linebacker Brian Asamoah II. Asamoah was the Vikings’ third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. He played sparingly on defense during his three seasons with the Vikings but seemed to have carved out a role as a special teamer for the purple. In each of his three seasons, Asamoah played in at least 60% of the special teams snaps in the games he was active for, topping out at 71% of those plays last season. Unfortunately for Asamoah, it appears that he’s being moved aside for players who the team feels might have a bit more to offer defensively rather than just contributing on special teams.

The waiving of Asamoah means that the Vikings have just two players left on the roster of the ten that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah selected in his first draft class as the team’s general manager: running back Ty Chandler (fifth round) and wide receiver Jalen Nailor (sixth round).

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/12/2025 9:41:53 PM)

Didn't Asamoah get into a fight with a teammate recently?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/12/2025 9:44:57 PM)

David, maybe it wasn't just a poor team, maybe Howell just makes poor decisions which leads to too many INTs.

It would be nice to see Brosmer work with the #2s, it seemed like Howell was bailed out by some great catches, whereas Brosmer seemed to make quicker decisions, and more accurate throws. But it could have been because Brosmer was going against 3rd string defenders.

But I also agree with the person that said it doesn't seem like a good idea to have an inexperienced backup behind McCarthy, when you potentially have a stacked team. Maybe a trade for a veteran, or signing an unsigned veteran is in the works.

Howell was 11/13 with 2 throw aways.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2025 12:51:28 AM)

I am aware of that, doesn't change anything I said.

Howell had 1 good preseason outing, WRs bailed him out on a couple of throws; he has a past with a lot of INTs in regular season games, and hasn't looked very good in the Viking practices.

Might be the worst draft class in NFL history.

One of those two remaining players is still going to be on the roster. The other, Chandler, is in a competition, that he's not winning, for a roster spot.

Any and every QB in NFL history is going to have throws that the WR made a great catch and bailed them out.

This is not a sign that Howell is bad.

It should. It should buy him another couple of series in the next preseason game at the least.

I sincerely hope we are racking our brains looking at better alternative solutions than Howell for QB2. That ship might have passed months ago.

Until Saturday, all the tc reports were gruesome - his play sat was far from it.

Its far from enough to feel the situation is resolved obviously.

We probably wouldn’t make a move until final cut downs anyway, so he has two more small samples to weigh against starting over with a new retread days before the season starts.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2025 10:38:30 AM)

Ok, Sam's performance made me think he now deserves a chance, instead of assuming he should be cut and replaced.

Brosmer's impressive performance makes me think he should be given a fair chance to earn the #2 spot.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2025 11:03:08 AM)

But, unlike some past Viking regimes, I trust McCown-Kevin Williams O'Connell and McCompany to make the right choices regarding QBs.

I am probably overrating one good preseason game for Brosmer.

It would have been nice to have gotten a backup QB with experience that hasn't thrown a lot of INTs, or gotten McCown to suit up in an emergency, let's just hope McCarthy stays healthy and develops into a solid/great QB.

Vikings-Patriots joint practice: J.J. McCarthy’s best practice of training camp and more

One reporter informed O’Connell that McCarthy had completed 13 passes in a row at one point and tallied six touchdowns. O’Connell, who typically dismisses training camp statistics, laughed.

“See,” O’Connell said, “this is the one time it’s good you guys were keeping some stats. I did not know that.”

There are times the final line does not match the eye test. This was not one of those times. McCarthy’s consistency commenced in the early red zone periods and extended until the final two-minute drill. He progressed quickly through reads. He pulled the trigger on throws with conviction.

The most stark difference Thursday compared to the majority of training camp may have been his accuracy. He arced a beautiful deep ball down the right sideline to running back Aaron Jones. He perfectly lofted a completion to tight end T.J. Hockenson in the end zone atop cornerback Marcus Jones.

The two passes McCarthy himself noted following Thursday’s practice were a layered throw to receiver Jordan Addison beyond the reach of two defenders. And the cherry on top of a successful two-minute drill was finding Addison in an open window.

“I think I’m one of the most accurate guys out there,” McCarthy said.

He then referred to the harsh rubric he has for himself.

“It’s not just, ‘Was the ball completed?’” McCarthy said. “It’s, ‘Did I give him a runner’s ball? Did I put it on the right pad for him to turn a certain way?’”

Kevin Seifert

J.J. McCarthy will not play Saturday vs. the Patriots. Kevin O’Connell confirms what he has been strongly hinting. McCarthy got a ton of work the past two days.

Re: lack of live game reps. J.J. McCarthy got roughly 60 snaps of 11-on-11 work vs. Patriots this week. A lot of unscouted looks Wednesday. More of a gameplan situation Thursday. Team views that as preferable to putting entire 1st-team offense at injury risk Saturday.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2025 12:28:37 PM)

Max Brosmer Won the Joint Practice Competition for QB3

Max Brosmer had another pretty good day in more limited reps, but once again clearly looked better than Brett Rypien, who also didn’t have many reps. The thing is, Rypien hasn’t really looked any better than he did at the beginning of training camp, while Brosmer most definitely does. His passes are crisper, he seems to be reading the field well, calm in the pocket, and just looks more confident.

Here's more upbeat McCarthy news after this weeks joint practice.

Chad Graff, formerly The Athletic’s Vikings beat reporter before taking the Patriots position with the site, put his proverbial money down on Minnesota winning the Superbowl.

“Our good friend Chad Graff came up and said, ‘Where do I put my money on the Vikings for the Super Bowl after that practice?’ It was truly that good,” Coller said, clarifying with Pioneer Press beat reporter that what has been discussed of the practice is not hyperbole.

I may have to make a bet on the Vikes winning the Superbowl. I see Fanduel pays $220 on a $10 bet.[8D]

Feb. 10 I bet $10 to win $430. Today the buyout is $12.50. I figure if the Vikings win a playoff game or two the buyout will be worth considering.

Didn't see the game today, did Howell pretty much solidify the #2 spot on the team ?

Did Brosmer do anything, or is Rypien challenging him ?

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2025 4:50:01 PM)

Howell stunk. Rypien was better than last week. Brosmer was so-so but pretty well under duress the whole second half. The oline was terrible. I'd like to believe the QB2 isn't on the roster yet.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Howell sucks. The offense stunk it up the whole game but I like Brosmer to develop.
