Metellus signed a three-year contract extension in 2023 that will void after this season. This spring, he sat out 7-on-7 drills, which were the most intense periods of the Vikings' practice plan.

Big deal. He's under contract and reported to camp. If he was so exemplary, he would not have missed the spring drills.

The problem with Metellus is where do you start with negotiations? What 'position' does play? Do you pay him like a safety? A corner? A LB? ect.....

If his agent is smart (and i'm they are) they're looking at the highest average of those positions since he plays them all, at times.

His best bet is to follow Flores.

About the only comp whom also is moved around in multiple spots is Jeremy Chinn of the Raiders. He signed for roughly 8ml per last season I believe.

I think a new Mettallus contract will be in th 10-12ml per range.

I've been hearing good things about UDFA CB Zemaiah Vaughn(Utah).

Maybe that's why we haven't pulled the trigger on some of these available CBs.

It will be a slow process or I should say multi-year....last year adding Van Ginkel, Cashman, and Grenard helped a ton (All three LB are very good against the pass).
This year adding Allen and Hargrave and solidifying the middle and adding a CB piece may be all they can do this offseason after all the pieces added to the OLine which is still a ton.

I agree with this...no other team pays him more than his present contract...i hope that we keep him, but you can't pay everyone...extending van ginkel, and already being 59mm over the 2026 makes it difficult....

if you look at our 2026 contract situation, it's not that easy to extend/rework our way into a positive cap number....

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/26/2025 3:06:18 PM)

Well, Metellus got paid...3 yr/36 mil extension, I think I read

Good for him!

And, I think, good for the Vikings

With incentives that potentially bump it to $42 million. The spending spree continues.

Players like Hargrave and Allen won't likely see the last year of their contracts. Fries contract is absurd. Kelly might be a one-year rental.

JJM better be all that.

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/26/2025 9:15:49 PM)

.
.
"I'm here, baby," Metellus said to kick off a news conference.

"The Vikings have now committed nearly $350 million in cash to their 2025 roster, capitalizing on the rookie contract of quarterback J.J. McCarthy to acquire a dozen veterans either through free agency or trade. They also re-signed running back Aaron Jones Sr., cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. and safety Harrison Smith, and extended the existing contract of linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel."...ESPN

Wilkins?

That would be one dominating DLine.

Missed most of last season and it sounds like he isn't close to being able to play:

HENDERSON, Nev. -- The Las Vegas Raiders have informed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins that he has been released, the team said Thursday.

Wilkins will be released with the designation of terminated vested veteran, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Wilkins has been recovering from a Jones fracture, which he suffered in his left foot last October. Because of how Wilkins has treated the rehab from his injury, the Raiders voided the remaining $35.2 million of guaranteed money left on his contract on June 4, sources said.

The belief was that Wilkins needed another surgery on his foot; he balked at getting it, sources told ESPN. The Raiders then voided the guaranteed money left on his deal due to "failure to maintain his physical condition to play."

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/29/2025 8:22:18 AM)

If Wilkins got a second surgery it would still be Nov/Dec for recovery. It'd be 13-14 months since actual football activity. Clearly it would take a bit of time for him to get back in to football shape depending on how much time he has spent in the buffet line.

Sign him. Put him on IR with the option to return.

sure, zero signing bonus and zero guaranteed money....

kwesi was in the hunt for him last year - glad that didn't happen....

Some prattle ... about catching up on training camp prattle (or, to some, scriptural content emblazoned in stone) ...

Nice to see that McCarthy – if not a great camp – is at least having a decent one with ups to go with the downs. He's still in the conversation for franchise savior, but not by a lot.

The backup QBs ... well ... that's a problem. Or possibly a brilliant wag the dog strategy by the regime to take pressure off of McCarthy. With some of the CBs looking training camp better (especially McGlothern and Jackson), Howell-Rypien-Brosmer are my main concern moving forward.

I guess the only silver lining in our backup qb situation is, a few closet Cousins fans can keep lighting their closet votive candles while praying to Kirkle Bricktomuffin, the Saint of Never Going to Happen Causes.

In the meantime, I might actually start pining for Mullens.

I don't know what to believe. Is McGlothern really gonna be good? That would be amazing. Is JJ getting all the lumps out? Sure hope he's learning a ton. I don't expect it's going to be easy for him. Then again I never thought Sam would lead us to 14 wins either. I'm definitely ready to see how they look in the first preseason game. When this team has high expectations they fail miserably so I'm glad they don't. Usually we do better that way.

Teddy Bridgewater is unretiring. Might not be the worst idea to bring him in. Could be a good mentor for JJM at least.

Nah. He has a QB coach & Coach that should do ok with that role. Just sign Cousins to ... jk, jk!

Turner is a fool. These players have had seminars and such, plus they've probably heard about instances where other people were scammed.

Turner then went to two Chase Bank branches to transfer $120,000 each to "Island Food Truck LLC" and "CNL FL LLC."

Really?

So through his stupidity he has enriched the scammer enterprise so they can go out and hire more scammers.

Different opinion for old people.

Lack of brain power may well have been one of the reasons he wasn't on the field much last season.

To actually go to his bank and not even talk to somebody (since your there) to confirm wth was going on makes you wonder.

On the flip side he was able to follow the scammers intructions to a tee.

It's not stupidity that is his problem here. It is Naivete. He's only about 22 years old. He hasn't got a lot of experience in the real world yet. Not enough to be cynical about shit like this yet.

For older guys like us, we're like DUH!!! Not falling for that bullshit...

And his "brainpower" had nothing to due with his lack of snaps. Van Ginkel and Greenard were getting the job done too well and were taking most of the snaps. When he got opportunities he didn't waste them...did pretty well.

I think merely by the fact he was Edge4 behind Patrick Jones tells me he didn't fully grasp the defensive playbook.

Kwesi gave up a shit load to move up and get this guy. Normally first rd picks play a lot more snaps than he did.

Extending Van Ginkle also is a sign that they don't believe in him.

Just reading the tea leaves.

All indications at the moment are that Turner will have many Pro Bowls in his future. Time will tell. Even after looking at Van Ginkel's contract on Spotrac I'm still confused. He had a one year contract for $10 million and now he has 2 years at $33 million? Is that correct?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/6/2025 10:17:55 AM)

If you pay attention to the Skor North podcasts (I do) they are pretty certain that the #2 QB is not on this roster right now. Apparently SH and BR are "not the guy" and MaxB isn't ready yet, although, he's been the best looking. These aren't just blind guesses either. These guys are at practice everyday and they bring in the lead beat writers, sportscasters ect. They all agree.

I haven't listened to Skor North but I've read those comments from other web/podniks hanging out at practice.

It's all hyperbole right now, so hard to know but Howell/Rypien seems like pretty weak sauce for this roster. Yes Darnold came in as bust city last year but at least he was highly touted at one point before flaming out. And he wasn't dogging it in training camp.

As long as our HCs ego doesn't get in the way of continuing to look for upgrades, even mediocre ones (since we passed on the usual mediocre suspects in March).

I couldn't be happier with the offseason in general, the focus on the trenches ... I'm eager to see where this thing goes.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/6/2025 1:25:33 PM)

I've read a lot of the same things about the QBs. Howell is straight up terrible. Rypien doesn't have the goods. Brosmer has actually impressed with his decision making and accuracy, but isn't ready for a QB2 job yet.

The defense tortured JJ the first week, but since Friday, he has gained his footing and is looking a lot better.

After over a year of waiting for it to happen, the Minnesota Vikings finally have their answer to the fate of Jordan Addison following his legal issues.

The league has just announced that Addison will be suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2025 regular season. That means that he will miss the team’s games against the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, and Cincinnati Bengals to start the season but will be back in time for the team’s back-to-back overseas games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns.

That in itself is a pain in the ass, but survivable. I’m more worried about the next one.

Depending on how Nailor steps up, after he attends the Jake Reed Dropsy Improvement School.
