Theilen would probably be a better fit, even if Hill is a better WR.

He costs a lot. No way we add that kind of cap hit while giving up more than just a couple of low round picks. We need a WR more for just the first few games. Initially it seemed more like a financial decision considering the outlay for the DL. But the Vikings are paying 1/2 of Phillips' salary so will retain about 1/3 of his $9+M cap hit, which isn't that high anyway. We basically get a 6th and since it's our 2027 7th for the Jets 2026 6th and 2027 6th. Merely a trade of an oldish vet in exchange for $6M in cap, a late pick, and an opportunity for the reserves? He was the Joe Lunch Pail type. Sort of the DL equivalent of Leroy Hoard... if you need one yard, I'll get you three yards. If you need five yards, I'll get you three yards.

I think it's also a move to get Elijah Williams a spot on the 53. No way they could stash him on the practice squad IMO.
