Coming home seldom works.

Fans eat it up though and tend to overrate such players... especially the walk-on local boy made good types.

At least Thielen is still a legit player. 1600 yards and 9 TDs the past 2 years with Bryce Young throwing him the ball.

If Thielen was a cut casualty it would be one thing. I wouldn't go higher than a 5th with some change back.

Agree.

A 5th for Thielen plus a roster bubble type we like, and a jar of baby pickles seems about right.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 11:23:15 AM)

With two weeks to go until the opener, most any acquisition is going to struggle knowing the playbook, with a rookie QB on top of that. Said acquisition may get up to speed by, oh, week 4... which is when Let's Get Paid returns unless he decides to nap on a freeway again.

In 30 hours we can pick up a vet WR for nothing. Why waste a pick for a rental who won't be ready to play?

Yeah, the Vikings thought Howell was worth a shot. He is just 25 with 18 starts under his belt and is considered to have some upside. Get him squared away and they have a quality young back up with some experience. KOC tried to unlock his potential and failed. Howell just doesn't process fast enough.

At the end of the day, the Vikings gave up a 5th last year and a 6th next year and got a 6th last year and a 5th and 7th next year.

I have zero problems with the gamble. Especially since KOC was clearly self-aware enough to realize he wasn't going to be able to work with Howell and move on.

And dumping Rypien for Brosmer shows solid forward thinking.

And Wentz is a guy that KOC should be able to, at least, tread water with if JJ misses a couple games. He's better than a 2:1 TD:INT guy for his career, pretty accurate and he's going to be in a very QB friendly system.

Thielens stats from last year were very good considering he played on a bad team. Here's a copy and paste summary.

"Adam Thielen received a 76.4 overall PFF grade for the 2024 NFL season, ranking him 29th among wide receivers and making him an above-average receiver for the Carolina Panthers, per PFF and Yahoo Sports. He was a reliable target for quarterback Bryce Young, demonstrating good route running and making only two drops throughout the year."

Even more reason for Carolina to hold onto him or demand an overpay.

That's about right, along with a $10K gift card to Brooks Brothers for Kwesi.

A 5th with a 7th in return or a 6th straight up, something along those lines.

Agree with all. Howell works out and they have a quality backup only 25 and on a rookie contract. Unfortunately the game happens at a high speed digital pace and Howell processes like a 1980's Beta VCR.

The only thing the Vikes paid was the opportunity cost of what else they might have done with #142.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 4:01:23 PM)

Howell was a complete waste, just by the high INT rate they should have known to stay away from him.

It costed a chance to look at another prospect with potential, but at least they weren't stubborn and held onto him as a backup.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 4:04:13 PM)

The only positive was getting something for Howell, after what we heard from camp, and what we witnessed in the preseason.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 4:06:28 PM)

McLaurin re-signing with the Commanders takes away one negotiation chip, and could mean the Vikings have to go up 1 more round with their draft pick to get Thielen back.

Those chips were not at the same table... not even in the same casino.

Pretty much an absurd conclusion. Same as if we needed some DE to help for a few games and, damn, we need to step it up because Cincy just signed a contract with Hendrickson.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 5:44:16 PM)

Barnwell from ESPN is saying the hangup is Thielen's $6+M salary. Seems he is speculating (?) that the Panthers and Thielen both remedy that by chipping in $.

Outside of AT, the Panthers WR corps is a dumpster fire although there is probably several young players in the mix. Maybe it's no wonder Bryce Young has struggled.

Targeting a guy who is the best of the trash heap is going to cost you. In the eyes of the Panthers, Thielen is damn near Randy Moss.

We looked at a prospect the whole time, Brosmer. Not sure where you are going with this. Two of our three qbs are essentially prospects. You need a vet or two when you go young.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 8:55:10 PM)

I am saying Howell was a bad choice for a veteran to look at, he threw too many INTs in the past, and as you saw, there is a reason for it.

I am saying there were probably a good half dozen veterans that would have been a better choice for a 6th round pick, or even one just off the scrap pile that wouldn't have required any picks.

Thankfully Philly was desperate enough to return a late round draft pick for Howell.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 8:59:32 PM)

Bill there were several articles in the last month that talked about McLaurin being traded to the Vikings, many more on Thielen, but several on MacLaurin.

One of the articles on Thielen to the Vikings, said Carolina won't be able to get a 3rd or even a 4th round pick from the Vikings with other options like McLaurin, Daubs, Hill, and others that could be traded for, along with some that might be cut.

Any decent WRs get cut today, I haven't looked at the list ?

Define "articles?"

He is only 24-25 and we have JJ and Brosmer who are both younger. How many young QBs do you want in camp?
To get a pick for Howell from Philly tells you he has some value in a different system. It wasn’t desperation.

We have 15-18 million in cap this year and minus 30 next year. Hill or McLaurin were never options at what they want. You think we can have two WR making over 25 million?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 9:49:17 PM)

Define "articles?"

- Does a Trade for McLaurin make sense:
https://share.newsbreak.com/epdyigc6

Vikings Perfect Trade Proposal for McClaurin: https://share.newsbreak.com/epdz3pe1

And here is another one, it had a misleading headline that made it sound like the Vikings had already traded for McLaurin: https://share.newsbreak.com/epedrtv0

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 9:51:12 PM)

Articles are something Ricky hasn't read, so he wants others to go back and find the articles they have read, because Ricky thinks others might be making up articles to prove their point, because Ricky hasn't read these articles.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 9:57:43 PM)

You think we can have two WR making over 25 million?

What is Cincy paying for Chase and Higgens ?

It's ok to go out of conventional thinking, if you think you're team could be a Super Bowl contender.

One article I read, they thought Addison was too much of a troublemaker, that the Vikings could have the 3 WRs this year, then trade Addison next year or the following year, keeping JJ and McLaurin as your WRs.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 10:05:52 PM)

Philly was desperate for a backup with some experience, they can have Howell, hopefully Wentz isn't just as bad in the Vikings' system.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2025 10:52:23 PM)

Minnesota Vikings trade CB Mekhi Blackmon to Indianapolis Colts

Didn't seem like the 2ndary was a deep position, are the Vikings gearing up for a trade using these extra late round selections ?

Yes, they are going to trade for McLaurin. Some 'article' said so.
