Apparently they couldn't give Vazquez away.

David Levine -> RE: Twins 2025 Game Day (7/31/2025 5:50:51 PM)

Gleeman:

Twins trade tally:

Carlos Correa
Jhoan Duran
Griffin Jax
Louis Varland
Brock Stewart
Willi Castro
Harrison Bader
Chris Paddack
Danny Coulombe
Ty France

They traded 40% of the roster, including the five best relievers and five players with 2+ years of team control remaining.

TJSweens -> RE: Twins 2025 Game Day (7/31/2025 6:08:37 PM)

The only one that surprised me was Varland

Initially Jax and Duran were surprises but we aren’t that good to utilize them. Plus Jax and Duran throw really hard and you trade them for younger versions or everyday guys. It seems that the arms eventually blow up. Taj Abel and Outman plus Keaschall time.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins 2025 Game Day (7/31/2025 6:46:26 PM)

There was an argument to be made for all these trades. Except for Varland.

Why trade away a cheap semi-dominant young reliever? Makes no sense.

Carlos Correa traded to the Astros:

• Twins are paying $30M of the $105M left guaranteed on his contract.
• Return: RP Matt Mikulski (26-year-old in rookie ball)
• This is a straight up salary dump, folks

They are weak at LHP and catchers thru the whole system. I don’t know if the Blue Jay lefty is worth it but Louie is 27 already and you would get zilch in return for just France.

Again you trade the hard throwers for a younger version.

Zero doubt about this.

The sheer number was a surprise. Pick any 3 from the list, sure. But all of them? Unprecedented.

MLB trade deadline 2025: Biggest winners and losers

The big loser: Minnesota Twins ... fans

What a sad, brutal day to be a Twins fan. Gone this deadline period: Carlos Correa, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, Danny Coulombe, Harrison Bader, Willi Castro, Brock Stewart and Chris Paddack. That's nine players off the 26-man roster, including the back end of a championship-caliber bullpen. At least they kept Joe Ryan and Byron Buxton.

Sure, some of those guys -- Bader and Castro in particular -- were heading to free agency. It's more the messaging here: We're cheap and we don't care about winning. Was that likely this season? Probably not, as the Twins are 5½ games out of the wild-card race. But it wasn't an impossible idea. One hot streak and they're right back in it. Is it likely next year? Probably not now. The Twins will need to build an entire bullpen from scratch, for starters. They have one legitimate star position player in Buxton, and he has trouble staying healthy.

Did they do well in the trades? Time will tell, but it's not like they loaded up on top-100 prospects or anything like that. Catcher Eduardo Tait is the most interesting prospect they got, but he's an 18-year-old in High-A and likely years away from making an impact. It's possible the Twins -- if they spend some of the savings on trading Correa's contract -- can reallocate their resources to build a more competitive, well-rounded team. It's also possible, with the team for sale, that the Twins are entering a Rays- or Pirates-like era of frugality, pocketing more profits while the losses pile up.

This Twins era began with a 101-win team in 2019. They signed Correa in 2022, but the Correa era will have produced just one playoff season in four years. It might be a few years before the Twins are even thinking of the playoffs again. Twins fans can only hope that assessment is wrong.

The CWS were more attractive to prospective buyers. I don’t see Correa as an offensive star any more. Plays a top 5 def SS. So when ESPN says Buck is the only star I don’t agree. 1) Ryan Pablo and Buck are the stars of the team 2) Correa was declining to a point where he isn’t a star on offense any more and that was that way before he was traded. He was so bad that when they batted him top 6 in the batting order for the first 50 games it just killed their offense.

FWIW MLB.com slotted Kendry Rojas right behind Mick Abel and ahead of every home grown pitcher in the Twins system.

As bad as the bullpen was gutted I don’t think we could have traded Vazquez as we don’t have a replacement currently even though no one wanted him.

I like Abel and Bradley and Outman can be serviceable. Time to let the kids play as the vets and supposed stars weren’t doing it. Be interesting to see who the bring up. Hope Keaschall right away.

Jhonny Pereada. He has major league experience and could easily have replaced Vazquez's patented blend of great defense and weak hitting.

Zero doubt about this.

And I have no problem with it. He was massively underplaying his contract. He wasn't worth it. The opportunity arose to dump his salary and they jumped all over it.

I had a dream last night, and this was the theme. Fans get upset when the Twins don't do anything at the trade deadline. Fans get upset when they are extremely active at the deadline. Seems like there's nothing they can do to make people happy.

Well the Twins could have just trade like 3 guys and set themselves up for next season.

Unlike two years ago when they did nothing
Last year when the something they did was just to say they did something
or this year where they set the team back 3 years.

They could have stopped at Bader and Stewart. Instead they traded most of their bullpen, one of the few guys they had in the rotation, Their starting SS etc.

They went from ONE extreme to the Other... there would have been plenty happy fans if they hadn't traded away nearly half the major league roster.

And they were in serious discussions to trade their best pitcher at the end too.

This is a "**** you" to the fans. Just like Red McCombs trading away Randy Moss before he sold the team.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: Twins 2025 Game Day (8/1/2025 9:02:57 AM)

What scares me now is that Rocco in his infinate managerial wisdom will see this as a reason to giving tons of playing time to the likes of Mickey Gaspar.

twinsfan -> RE: Twins 2025 Game Day (8/1/2025 9:09:04 AM)

Keep in mind we improved our starting pitching. Addition by subtraction getting rid of Paddack. Lopez will be back, and we'll have 2 aces. Ober coming back, hopefully effective like we was last season. Got a guy from the Phillies that's ready for a rotation spot. SWR is pitching well. We're not in a bad place. Many teams would kill for our stable of starting pitching.

Duran, Jax, Stewart, and even Varland were at max value and we got a decent return for the guys on their last year France, Castro, Bader, and Columbe.

Actually the SP is were Falvey has struggled developing not RP. I really am not that pissed as I saw some of this coming; just not 10 players....I was thinking 5-6.

Matt and his wife may be the only 2 fans at games the rest of the year.......
