ORIGINAL: David Levine “Football looks hard for him.” - Anonymous offensive coach on #Vikings QB JJ McCarthy in @SandoNFL recent poll ranking quarterbacks around the NFL. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/interactive/nfl-quarterback-tiers-insider-rankings-2026/?unlocked_article_code=1.21A.-AUJ.OLYd6AM7xvC_&source=emp_shared_interactive&smid=ta-ios-share Interesting. Toughness not translating into durability is a great point. I also liked… “The head coach and QB coach (Josh McCown) are quarterback snobs because they played the position,” an exec said. “Backup QBs love the fundamentals because it’s their only chance to spend 3-4-5 years in the league. So, the question is, when is their patience going to run out …” Its a snobbish comment about former backup qbs being qb coach snobs, but rings true. Maybe JJ will get over the fundamentals / injury hump … might or might not not be with us. KOC MCCOWN seem much more adept at molding off track experienced players than developing new ones. So IOW that exec is implying coaches pretty much look for QBs who have the fundamentals down pat to be the backup? Seems so. Because in the usual QB scheme it's 1-Starter, 2-Fundamental veteran who can hang in there for a few games, 3-Boom/bust clipboard holding youngster. In that sense, we would have 1-Murray, 2-Wentz, 3-JJM. These posts were from Aug 6. Even though Wentz hasn't done anything besides go through the motions, he is on a trajectory to be the full-time backup. It just hasn't been officially announced yet.
