I am not sure who was with me, but I was in the camp that didn't think Darnold was likely to win a playoff game. After last season, I thought he might win 1 wildcard game in his entire career, and that would be as far as he would ever take a team.

I was very much wrong on that, who knows, he might still win multiple Super Bowls and put together a HOF career.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/27/2026 1:00:38 PM)

The draft results speak for themselves:

2022
Nailor (WR3)
Chandler (Backup, RB3-4)

2023
Addison (Starter)
Jay Ward (Backup)

2024
JJM (Hot Mess)
Turner (Backup, starter material)
Rouse (Backup)
Reichard (Awesome)
Jurgens (Backup)
LDR (backup)

2025
Jackson (Starter)
Felton (WR4)
Ingram-Dawkins (Backup)
Bartholomew (TE5)

Four Drafts: two Starters in Addison and Jackson, a WR3, Turner who can start but doesn't, a great FG kicker.

Some of the picks in 2024-25 may one day start, but some will more likely be cut as the hamster wheel continues to roll.

Now that should be separated out to those that thought it was a wise choice to keep Sam, and those that thought we should go with McCarthy, even if it meant taking a step back.

Now the verdict is not immediately in on that.

IF Sam loses the Super Bowl, and then never goes to the Super Bowl again, while McCarthy wins a Super Bowl for the Vikings, that would show it was actually the better decision to go with McCarthy.

IF Sam wins a Super Bowl, it was still the right decision to go with McCarthy, if he also wins a Super Bowl.

IF Sam wins the Super Bowl, but never wins another, while McCarthy wins multiple Super Bowls, then it was absolutely a great decision to go with McCarthy.

IF Sam wins the Super Bowl, and McCarthy never wins one, pretty much everyone on the board will owe Brad an apology.

And if Sam wins multiple Super Bowls, and McCarthy never wins one, then the football God's are even meaner than they have been in the past.

Ok, the ice underneath Kwesi has a decent amount of thickness.

Brad was right on Darnold.

I didn't think Darnold would ever be clutch, there are plenty of QBs in the league, that just don't cut it when the games that really count happen, and that was Darnold until yesterday.

Darnold had some games in the regular season where we were still questioning if he really had the it factor, but either the rest of his team would pull through, or Darnold would make a play in the 4th quarter to win the game, after he wasn't so hot for 3 quarters.

That wasn't the case yesterday, props to longtime Vikings' fan Brad H.

There ya go. An honest, humble response.

You wouldn't recognize humble or honest if they slapped your face with twenty foot kraken testicles.

You picked a side in an argument ... not even based on a reasonable opinion or wild assed guess.

It was based on your bromance with Darnold and your spite for the Vikings.

You were puddling around in the right place at the right time. Darnold has played better for the Seahawks than the Vikings.

Over the last two games. Kudos to Sam.

I'm looking forward to the game ... since I tend to favor the NFC in super bowls, I'm pulling for the Seahawks.

I wish I cared enough to pull for a Darnold meltdown – similar to his abject failure for us. Just to see Brad squirm.

Nope. More than anything, can't wait to move into the offseason for relevant viking debate.

Sam Darnold 2024 - sacked 48 times in 17 games

San Darnold 2025 - sacked 27 times in 17 games

It'll never matter until we finally get the OLine right. I'll give them a little credit as they finally tried but it flamed out spectacularly. Seattle protected him and has a very good running game to compliment him. He would have never, truly, succeeded in MN in 2025.

He also is apparently getting much better coaching than he got here:

From Alec Lewis, The Athletic:

"When the Vikings were winning with Darnold last season, I asked a veteran coach to watch the Vikings' offense in hopes of learning just how well Darnold was playing. The coach thought there was a big gap between Darnold's impressive 2024 stats and how well he was actually playing for Minnesota. We found relatively few high-level plays in the games we watched.

That same coach could not believe he was watching the same quarterback when he flipped through the Seahawks' offensive plays with Darnold this season.

"The whole thing was Tier 1," this coach said. "No one we know is throwing better than that."

Play after play showed Darnold delivering the ball accurately and with nuance, including against the rush.

"He used to be jittery in there," the coach said. "Now, he stands in there and looks down the barrel. A couple times, he jumped and threw like (Aaron) Rodgers does. He dropped to three-quarters (delivery)."

Was this really the same player?

"The deep ball has been accurate, making sure they can catch the ball and assuring the yardage," the coach said. "He's throwing it correctly into the short zones to keep his guys alive, which is interesting. He is leading receivers away from the hook defender, making the guy slide on the digs. He's way better. I'm so impressed."

No way our roster was as good as Seattle's roster......6 pro bowlers. We didn't have one.

Holy cow who the hell did Bill Belichick piss off? Besides everyone of course...but if he's not a first ballot HOF then who is?

Are the voters saying it was all Brady??

In the end we trusted the QB guru O'Connell. We assumed JJ could be a starter with the QB guru. I was ok with letting Darnold walk, delegating my vote to KOC who knows better than any of us.

I always felt that Darnold should have been signed to a 2 or 3 year contract in the first place, since a good year would make him a viable trade candidate at the very least. I don't know if that was ever on the table for both parties.

I'm happy for Darnold, I was always fan of his since his USC days. Bad luck in NY, contracting mono early in his 2nd season, then coming back to what was essentially a 3 win team. Then going to another dysfunctional situation in Carolina where he had to battle the ultra competitive Mayfield for a starting spot.

He was poor vs the Lions last season no doubt. I don't blame him much for the Rams loss since the OLine had no chance. He obviously learned from that, and I didn't see him hold the grenade like he did last season in those pressure spots. Something must have clicked as well, he had thrown 6 terrible INTs vs the Rams in the first 6 or 7 quarters this season, perhaps he had a tell that was tipping off the Rams. In the last 5 quarters he plays lights out.

Agree with all your points.

I too wonder why we didn't try to ink Darnold for at least two years when we initially signed him being our qb room lacked any vet other than him going forward. Maybe he was betting on himself but at that point in his career I'm not sure he would have turned down a 2 year 20ml deal. Guess we'll never know what transpired there.

I was thinking he didn't have it in him after the Det/Ram games but was wondering could he overcome that. He did and good for him. Like you said we all deferred to O'Connell assuming he knew what he was doing (apparently not) now were standing holding the bag.

Paul Allen in hot water. I was listening on Friday when he said some absurd stuff. He won't be on tomorrow. Suspension or firing oncoming.

PA has been a sanctimonious fake Christian for a long time and his show sucks anyway. He likes to listen to himself talk and wastes entire segments of his show talking in circles without saying anything. Him and Matt Birk together was really terrible talking down to people with their holy roller schtick....Good riddance.

Not sure it's the oline or O'Connells pungent for his slow developing pure progression offense.

After watching these playoffs I see most play callers calling quick hitting plays to get the ball out of the qb's hand. Also, running the ball more.

Most important....a top 5-10 running offense for the playoffs.....that helps the sack numbers.

MN was bottom 10.

I'm not backtracking on last year's QB situation.

Darnold was a crapola QB not worth $20 million over two years. But absent having anyone else he could compete for a year. Fast forward he choked, and while months of therapy could maybe rewire that element of his brain, he was not worth resigning because at that point he was a proven choker. He wasn't worth $100 million or $1 million. Naturally the team decides such matters, but from a fan/armchair GM perspective it was not about to deferring to O'Connell.

Then the team was in a quagmire having the #10 overall pick and no QB. The pick almost had to be QB but was the pick high enough to get one of the so-called top QBs. There was a lot of debate who it might be, could we trade up even more, etc. All of them had pros and cons so it became a matter of hoping the one selected would pan out. After two years, I don't think JJM is the QBOTF. Some growing pians are expected. But his results were, by some measures, among the worst in the modern era. And while he may never have another injury, his track record says he simply has too many injuries.

Thrilled for Donald. He has more than proven himself. Compare his statistics to Allen the last 2 years.
He had a couple rough games at Minnesota at the wrong time. The Vikes let Sam walk so they could spend quite a bit in free agency.
I still have hopes for McCarthy, but Sam has shown me that he's the real deal.

I think we make the playoffs with Darnold. Maybe one win. Our OLine is just too soft and our DBs would get smoked by competent offenses

If you compare the 22 starters between Vikings and SEA, we maybe have 5 or 6 guys that would start.

Yes. He was one of the positions that went to the Seahawks. I would say JJ, O'Neill, Van Ginkel, Redmond and possibly Turner would start if you combined the 2 teams.

If you are being honest, the Rams made us look like a 5 win team in last year's playoff game. Very similar to the Giants playoff loss when Cousins won 13 games.
