For Vikings management it is probably a good thing these message boards didn't exist back in 2003 when Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson were about to meet in the Super Bowl.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/28/2026 3:40:55 PM)

Adam Schefter:

Source: Commanders are finalizing a deal to hire Vikings defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Daronte Jones as their defensive coordinator.

Jones has been one of Brian Flores’ most trusted defensive coaches the past three seasons, and he also has coached under Vance Joseph and Mike Zimmer.

Steve Lentz -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/28/2026 3:55:33 PM)

He's got a chance!

Yup. And totally shit the bed in a playoff game. 14 regular season games won doesn't mean shit without a SB trophy. MIN has plenty of regular season wins. The trophy case is empty. When they needed him to deliver to get us to the SB, he sucked.

You can try to put as much lipstick on that pig as you want and tell me how the new TEAM he is on this year has done (hell - they probs win the SB). But he choked on last year's team, and based on what OUR roster and cap would have looked like this year, highly unlikely he does better. YMMV.

Again, it's not Darnold hate. Given performance on our roster and the totality of that and cap considerations, I personally don't think it was reasonable to assume a better performance from him this year with fewer team resources. Not surprised he did well in SEA. I would have been shocked if he had done well in MIN. Both things can be true.

Agreed. I'm happy for Sam. I'm glad he's shown up in the playoffs. You know who else showed up? A true no 1 wr. We overpay for a guy who's a possession receiver and can't get in the endzone.

I'm not backtracking on last year's QB situation.

Darnold was a crapola QB not worth $20 million over two years. But absent having anyone else he could compete for a year. Fast forward he choked, and while months of therapy could maybe rewire that element of his brain, he was not worth resigning because at that point he was a proven choker. He wasn't worth $100 million or $1 million. Naturally the team decides such matters, but from a fan/armchair GM perspective it was not about to deferring to O'Connell.

Then the team was in a quagmire having the #10 overall pick and no QB. The pick almost had to be QB but was the pick high enough to get one of the so-called top QBs. There was a lot of debate who it might be, could we trade up even more, etc. All of them had pros and cons so it became a matter of hoping the one selected would pan out. After two years, I don't think JJM is the QBOTF. Some growing pians are expected. But his results were, by some measures, among the worst in the modern era. And while he may never have another injury, his track record says he simply has too many injuries.

I think we make the playoffs with Darnold. Maybe one win. Our OLine is just too soft and our DBs would get smoked by competent offenses

If you compare the 22 starters between Vikings and SEA, we maybe have 5 or 6 guys that would start.

And yet, he won 14 games with them in 2024.

Yes. He was one of the positions that went to the Seahawks. I would say JJ, O'Neill, Van Ginkel, Redmond and possibly Turner would start if you combined the 2 teams.

If you are being honest, the Rams made us look like a 5 win team in last year's playoff game. Very similar to the Giants playoff loss when Cousins won 13 games.

Why did they win 14 games? Easier Schedule.
Same reason the Bears won the divison this year.

I don't buy it

Do you know how many games the last place schedule actually effects? Not as many as you might think.

Only three games are determined by where you finished in your division.
Sure you might catch a weaker division (AFC South for example) but for the most part the difference between our schedule and the Packers will just be three games.

Also from one year to the next a weak team can become stronger through Free agency, trades and the draft. If it is done well...

So Schedule strength is a weak argument IMHO.

How many All Pros did we have on the roster this year?

There are multiple reasons why he is doing better this year and we are worse. 3 game difference on the 3 close ones? (Pitt, Chicago, Ravens) but we also won on the road at Detroit and Chicago with JJ.....so team wise we weren't as good this year.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/29/2026 5:00:00 PM)

Kirk being released by Falcons.

I sit here in wonder that I think I seriously would take Kirko Chainz back in a heart beat

it would be hysterical

somehow his agent would get us to pay him $100 mil for 2 yrs

The only way Kirk comes back is if he can't find a starting job somewhere else.

Some of us have been on this message board, and this message board at the Trib, back to 1997, maybe further.

Nobody cares about the Twins.

Tom Pelissero:
Now official: Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is out as Vikings GM and longtime executive Rob Brzezinski will lead all operations through the 2026 NFL Draft.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47779886/vikings-fire-gm-kwesi-adofo-mensah-4-seasons

Kwesi fired. I was still surprised, but as was very clearly documented on this site, his drafting record is horrible and has really set back the organization. Also, his free agency signings record was mixed too. I am curious how they will handle the draft and if they really wait to get a new GM after the draft.

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (1/30/2026 12:25:36 PM)

wow!

thought his extension would give him another year

glad it did not

time to make this draft something better than what we saw under him...

wonder if there are qb shenanigans in the works

It's a distinct possibility nobody is talking about. Altanta and KC reworked his deal to lessen the cap hit if they release him....With the intent of letting him go when then new league year starts as a June 1 designation. There he would be, a guy that knows KOCs system, who has had success with it, even though many of us here would probably lose our shit if they did bring him back.

Kwesi was fired today...perhaps he suggested a KC KOC reunion and the Wilfs said, **** you your fired.

oh wow, I see they want to wait until after the draft to make a new hire...

that seems odd, but I guess this is KOC's draft...

wonder how much input there will be from Flores...

and Brzezinski, as apparently he will "run the front office"

Holy boy! I expected this move to happen next year, but sooner is better than later, I guess. Some of my TalkVikes buddies could make better choices than kam did. Let’s hope that Rob and company are up to the job of finding some early round starters and quality depth pieces. I just want to win a Super Bowl while I’m still young g enough to remember it!
