A cute plucky small market team might make a splash occasionally, but it’s not a model for continued success or proof that the system works. A big payroll doesn’t guarantee success either, you still need to build smart. But it sure does boost your chances.

I know many fans that only talked and watched the Twins in years past were done when they said they were cutting 30 million in payroll in November just a few years back. Going to take a lot more to get them back.

So does that hurt the player, like maybe stunting progression through his contract? There would be a revolt in the NFL if players couldn't get to their second contracts.
