Is Lore going to follow the Grampa Glen model and delay ownership transfer for 5 years (and lose a few billion)so he can show Stad the ropes of being a majority owner....

Lore bought for $1.5 billion and sold $4.5 billion. He tripled his money in a year, I'm sure he's happy. It's easy to see why Grampa Glen tried so desperately to shuttle his own deal.

I think that was the total franchise valuation:

Marc Lore held the controlling (majority) interest as the largest single shareholder in the Minnesota Timberwolves (and Lynx), but his exact individual percentage was not publicly disclosed.

nytimes.com

After the group led by Lore and Alex Rodriguez completed the acquisition from Glen Taylor (approved by the NBA in June 2025 at a $1.5 billion valuation, following earlier minority purchases totaling around 36% and a full buyout), Lore served as governor/co-chairman and was the largest single investor. He and Rodriguez together held over 50%, with the remainder split among roughly a dozen limited partners (including figures like Marc Stad, Michael Bloomberg, and Eric Schmidt), none of whom held a substantial individual percentage.

startribune.com

In August 2026, Lore agreed to sell his controlling stake to limited partner Marc Stad (at a $4.5 billion valuation for the franchises), stepping back to a limited/minority partner role to focus on his company Wonder, while Rodriguez increased his stake and remained a major co-owner. Exact post-sale percentages for Lore (or others) have also not been disclosed.

nytimes.com

Ownership details in private sports franchise deals are often not fully public beyond high-level controlling vs. minority distinctions.

BREAKING: Jonathan Kuminga has agreed to a two-year, $13 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, plus a player option, agent Aaron Turner tells ESPN. Kuminga will be a starter alongside Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert on the West contender.

David Levine -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/26/2026 5:56:34 PM)

Shams:

In the last month, the Timberwolves persistently recruited Kuminga, offering their best financial tool in the taxpayer mid-level exception plus a large on-court opportunity. Edwards was a major part of the full-court recruiting press to sign Kuminga while president Tim Connelly traveled to Miami for a four-hour in-person meeting with Kuminga earlier this month along with productive conversations between the wing and coach Chris Finch.

There will have to be another move to clear enough salary to allow for us to use the mini MLE.

I said he wanted more than 6M - and his agent tried and tried to get him more.

I also said we didn’t have access to the 6M - and we still don’t. We need to salary dump Green by Saturday. And if we can’t, then we need to waive and stretch him.

Rumors were he wanted 14 but no one would give him that and a starting job from what I read. Connelly must be a smooth talker.

Do we have bird rights then with a 2 year contract?

Green or DDV.

Bird Rights require 3 years.

You get Early Bird rights after 2 (105% of the average salary (which is still less than the MLE).

But, it’s not a 2 year contract. It’s 1 year plus a player option. So we’d only get his early bird rights if he opts in next year (meaning he wasn’t good enough to command a bigger deal).

Most likely he continues to be a bust and plays 2 years for us. Or he has a breakout year and leaves.

David Levine -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/26/2026 8:48:46 PM)

It will definitely not be Donte.

TJSweens -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/27/2026 7:10:47 AM)

About the only thing I know about Kuminga is that he had a big playoff series against the Wolves. The vibe I got at the time was that performance had not caught up to potential.

He hasn't been very good and thinks he's a lot better than he is.

He has the ability to be a strong supporting player, but to this point, sees himself as a star.

He needs to prove that he can function in an offense without being THE offense. He needs to dedicate himself to defense and rebounding.

He needs to be more coachable than what we've seen from him. IQ has not been a strength.

Best hope is this offseason has humbled him to the point that he realizes how many little things he needs to do if he wants to still be in the NBA in 3 years.

TJSweens -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/27/2026 9:51:38 AM)

I guess on the plus side is that he is 23. His efficiency is solid and he will get plenty of opportunity to fill a scoring roll with Randle and Naz gone. His per 36 numbers are...not bad, I guess. According to the strib, he is an above average defender, but I only have their word for it. He still leaves us undersized at forward. I don't know how strong the leadership is in the locker room to deal with his ego.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/27/2026 6:54:38 PM)

That’s the thing I look at too. He’s 23. The constant question with these guys who came in early, have been around a while but are still young. Have they arrived at who they’re going to be at 23? Or is there still room to grow?

And yes this does leave them with a size deficit. They must think Beringer is going to take a big leap. If he does, that would be great. Lots of talent but very raw. Is he ready for significant minutes on a contending team trying to win now?

David Levine -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/27/2026 7:03:56 PM)

Its a decent risk.

He either has a good year, helps us and then moves on after the season, or he flames out and we only have one more year at 6M to deal with.

No it didn't. His play last year warranted a 6M valuation. That's exactly what he got.

There was plenty of money available at the start of free agency. No one wanted to pay him what his agent thought he was worth.

Retread PFs signed for double what he got.

Nah, he ended up in about the best possible spot for himself. If he has a good year, he'll make more money over the next 3-5 than if he would've signed elsewhere.

Even if you factor in him turning down a 70ml contract from GS?

Probably. Kerr didn't want him, wasn't going to play him and he wouldn't have developed. That might've ended up being his last contract.

Could be. A relatively young guy playing to revive his career and open eyes around the league for the next big contract has potential. And he’ll get the exposure here to do just that.

Not an exact comparison, but the NAW model comes to mind. He established himself with Wolves and cashed in big with the Hawks.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Timberwolves Gameday (8/29/2026 5:41:49 AM)

There it is. Josh Green to Utah for Cody Williams and Jon Kunchar. Both make 6 million a year and sounds like they will stretch Konchars contract
