So Mannion's might not be the best OC ? The Eagles got 7 points so far .

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/28/2026 10:04:39 PM)

There is a much, much greater chance JJM will instead be out of the league.

The odds certainly favor that, it is much more probable, but you never know.

Some were saying the same thing with regards to Darnold a little over a year ago.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 7:16:01 AM)

For some odd reason I keep thinking we should see if Stacey's mom boyfriend, I mean Zach Wilson has matured.

He had a ton of talent and his biggest issue was maturity. Slough passed him by w/o issue so odds aren't that great.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 8:09:29 AM)

It's a lot easier to say a guy will fail, that's the pussy route.

Only 1 QB wins the SB each year, and some win multiple SBs.

I believe that JJ has the right mindset and tools, and it's a lot easier for a guy to learn to take something off the ball, than to have a weak arm trying to throw a deep pass. JJ also has good mobility, and has the height. It's the 1st time I ever thought the Vikings drafted a possible SB winning QB.

I will say I told you so if JJ ever wins a SB, but you pussies can gloat if he does what the odds suggest and is out of the league in a few years.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 8:18:42 AM)

I don't remember anyone commending Brad for being right about Darnold (although that could be because he kept bringing up 15-3), but Brad was right about Darnold and he was right about Caleb Williams being a more than capable NFL starter.

Are there any future draft pick QBs, or available backup QBs, that you're bold enough to say you think they have what it takes to win a SB, or are you going to take the easy route and say every one of them will fail ?

Again you miss the point.

$$$ was the main reason we didn't keep Darnold and what happened with Kirk and we just drafted a QB that looked the part his rookie year. Also we thought we could keep Daniel Jones. The reason Darnold won the SB was Seattle had a running game, defense, and ST as a balance. He was one of many reasons they won a SB.

You obviously see we are 3-0 w/o great QB play.....Seattle went 2-0 with their backup and lost when Darnold started.....so it isn't necessarily Darnold but he is a nice piece for them.

Also Chicago waxed Philly with Case Keenum.....football isn't Tecmo Bowl. We need improved QB play eventually but we can win games at times w/o.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 8:54:50 AM)

If we really thought Darnold could win the SB, money should not have mattered. Would Teasley have re-signed Darnold under those same circumstances?

It doesn't matter if Darnold goes on the road and loses a regular season game. He showed he can lead a team to a SB victory, and he was an important part.

Brad was right, and I didn't see you commending him, I was the only one commending Brad on it, at least that I recall

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 8:57:29 AM)

It wouldn't shock me if Teasley went and got Justin Herbert now, but going by his past, it's more likely Teasley tries to find the next Sam Darnold during the off season, unless the Vikings win the SB with one of the current QBs ☺️.

Brad selfishly wanted Darnold on the team. Look at the dead cap this year and last and see if it was viable....IMO it was not. His performance late in the season led to JJM and Brad's excuse was the Oline......well that takes $$$.

Also they wanted Daniel Jones over Sam.

You mean going by what Seattle has done...we know nothing about how Teasley wants to run things.

But it would shock me if he went after Herbert, simply based on the cost

I would bet he wants to get the next big thing in the draft, because that is what GM's want to do in general...

I can't imagine he thinks the future of Viking quarterbacks is on the team, and I wouldn't expect a free agent or trade is what he hopes for

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 9:53:52 AM)

The thing I can't wrap my head around is why they had that faux "comp" in TC for the #1 QB position. It's pretty clear that KOC was done with JJM for whatever reason. Why take the reps away from a guy who missed damn near an entire season and was in a brand new system? Seems idiotic to me.

The only reasons I could see is 1) they wanted Kyler to work harder or have it appear he won it fair and square, 2) light chance they might see a change in JJM and possibility of him actually working out.

I can think of only 2 reasons. Thor was on Skor North yesterday and commenting how dumb it was (both trading him away and the camp competition).

Thor said that the worst part was announcing Kyler won the competition after his worst day of practice. That is what has him at that end of it.

That's a special type of butthurt stance.

If he leads a team to a SB, gloat all you want. Cheer to high heaven. Rub it in. Be Brad.

In the meantime, why not accept people have a different take and don't need to be called pussies for their take. And when JJM is out of the league after having accomplished nothing, there is no reason for anyone to gloat that they were right because it's all but fait accompli. It might be worthy of a post like yep, saw it early on, he was flawed in too many ways, waste of a high pick, but certainly nothing to gloat about in Brad-esque style.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 10:22:38 AM)

I hate to mention it but Marty was throwing around the thought of Flores as HC and here JJM would have been treated differently now that Flores should be HC (according to Marty).

Flores situation was horrible with Tua and rumor is he was calling JJM, "White Tua" during practices and in general.

Not that I want to put Marty at the opposite ends of the spectrum but in no way was JJM Flores type either.

The competition didn't last very long, although people can say any snap that was taken away from Murray was a snap too many and they are not wrong. Maybe it was to give Murray a bit of a challenge and to see what JJM had.

Saying KOC was done with JJM is in hindsight, because if JJM balled out KOC would have embraced with him. He would have been at least the #2 QB if not higher. But what happened with JJM was more of the same. And because you need the basic fundamental guy at backup, JJM was doomed from then on.

It was a pivotal time for JJM, probably career defining.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 11:37:08 AM)

JJM was starting to outplay Murray when Murray was named the starter.

Yes, you're being a pussy if you never vouch for any QB to be the Vikings starter, while putting down anyone's ideas on it. But continue to be a pussy, it's always easier to not take a stance, and knock anyone that takes a stance, continue the easy route that is expected of you.

Some good points there Jeff.

Hmmmm. I have a wife so I'm wrong most of the time, and williing to concede [:D]

I actually (with no proof) have been trumpeting that KOC just didn't like JJM's personality. I'll die on that hill. It was just weird that he kept bringing up that he missed practice because of the birth of his kid. The "griddy" thing ect.

Skor North did the research. His first 3 games last year were better than the first 3 of this year. Why not run him out there? He could do the same and he could be the future. Was he good/great, nope. But we are getting the same output.

Love him or hate him, Wentz's contract was that of a #2. I "think" they tried to move in the offseason because KOC was just done but couldn't get the capital. When they couldn't, they tried to prop him up.

It just sucks because it's such a waste of the #10 pick. Moving forward. If they try to blame this on KAM, I'm gonna smash my head in to my TV. This is 100% on KOC. So, now, fix it!!!!!!!!

What? All along I've gone with Murray as the starter. But he is rapidly showing he doesn't deserve to be the starter. Unfortunately nobody else does either. Moreover, I'm not going to falsely pimp or "vouch for" any of the Vikings QBs beyond that primarily because I don't think any of them are legit post-season winners. You can call me a pussy all you want for that 'stance'.

Alternatively, you've latched onto JJM and proclaimed some whacky stance about him. Big deal. You want a medal for bravery?

And if saying JJM has a much greater chance of being out of the league than winning a SB is somehow "putting down" your ideas, that's also on you. This is an opinion board and your thin-skinned emotionally dramatic hissy fits aside, it's fair for people to express their alternative viewpoints.

BTW, the fact is JJM was relegated to 3rd string because he had several major flaws in his game and persona. He didn't outplay anyone.

It would shock me.

After the JJM trade we have about 13M in room. If we cut Murray, it would be a bit over 14M.

We'd need to clear another 32M just to fit Herbert's contract.

And if we somehow decimated our roster to clear the space, do you really think the Chargers are really going to take an 86M hit in dead cap by trading him now?

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 12:25:11 PM)

9’s route

Newly acquired New York Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy has followed a similar trajectory to Trey Lance, and that’s not a path either envisioned. The question is whether McCarthy can ever do enough to warrant another starting opportunity, which Lance has yet to accomplish.

The Minnesota Vikings traded up in the first round for McCarthy in 2024. Though McCarthy opened training camp behind starter Sam Darnold, his rookie season was officially wiped out due to meniscus surgery. He struggled with performance and more injuries over 10 starts in 2025, so the Vikings added Kyler Murray on a minimum deal in free agency.

McCarthy never did enough throughout the summer to challenge Murray, but the Vikings truly revealed their lack of trust in McCarthy when Carson Wentz was tabbed as the backup. A month later, the Vikings traded McCarthy for a fifth-round pick.

Lance also entered the league in a heavily hyped draft class, though the 2021 group has largely disappointed. The San Francisco 49ers traded up in the first round for Lance, who opened his rookie season behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance made two starts for an ailing Garoppolo, but Lance’s time was also shortened due to knee and finger injuries.

Lance started two more games before suffering a gruesome ankle injury, and Brock Purdy emerged. The Niners traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in August 2023 for a fourth-round pick. Lance has since made two spot starts for the Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers as a backup to a pair of franchise pillars.

If there’s a lesson to be learned, perhaps it's about a quarterback's collegiate experience. McCarthy was a popular prospect in his draft class, but he was more of a projection than his peers. McCarthy made 28 starts over two seasons at Michigan and led the Wolverines to a national championship, so he made terrific use of his time.

Still, teams knew McCarthy played in a very basic offense, so he’d require time and on-the-job experience. Injuries muzzled both.

Perhaps the Vikings could have done a better job in support. The team was trying to balance the urgency of winning with a readymade roster and the patience of developing a long-term answer at QB. That’s the organizational dream — having Steve Young there to take the baton from Joe Montana — but there’s a reason the examples are few and far between. It’s hard enough to develop one quarterback, never mind two.

The Niners had fantasies of déjà vu, but Lance never had a chance with the injuries. He entered the league on the heels of 17 starts at North Dakota State, and there was concern over his massive jump from the FCS to the NFL, especially after losing the 2020 season. By the time Lance returned from the broken ankle in 2023, he’d made five starts over his previous three seasons, shattering any shot at development.

There are already similar concerns, among others, about draft prospect Brendan Sorsby, who was declared ineligible this season after admitting to making impermissible sports bets. The team that drafts Sorsby will need to be confident in its developmental plan and set checkpoints for him to amass necessary playing time. Of course, they’ll also have to hope for better injury fortune than Lance and McCarthy have experienced.

It feels inevitable McCarthy will start eventually for the Giants at some point. With Jaxson Dart likely out for the season and veteran Jameis Winston unable to provide much spark through two appearances, it’s understandable why the Giants would want to evaluate McCarthy. And they’ll need to do it sooner rather than later, because Dart should assume his perch as the starter in 2027.

It's unrealistic to believe McCarthy will become fluent in Matt Nagy’s system this season, so consider this more of an audition than a thorough evaluation. McCarthy will need to shine in those improbable circumstances to break a career arc that has begun to feel familiar.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/29/2026 12:27:29 PM)

Giants trade grade: C+
It’s a tall order for any quarterback to join a team after the regular season’s start, especially one without much experience. McCarthy never mastered Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell’s user-friendly offense, so it’s fair to be skeptical that the QB will find proficiency with the Giants while learning a new scheme on the fly.

Of course, McCarthy was a first-round pick for a reason, so it’s at least plausible the Giants are a better fit for his game. The Giants scouted McCarthy heavily during the 2024 pre-draft process before taking wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth pick instead. That was before Harbaugh’s time in New York, of course, but general manager Joe Schoen was with the team, so he should be very familiar with the pros and cons of McCarthy’s game.

McCarthy certainly wouldn’t be the first high pick to flame out with his original team and find success elsewhere. And if Winston doesn’t improve, the Giants have another quarterback who brings some semblance of hope for the future.

Vikings trade grade: B-
General manager Nolan Teasley, who Minnesota hired in June, didn’t draft McCarthy, so it was time to assess McCarthy’s value to the organization. Did he make more sense as a backup who could still one day develop into a starter, or was it time to end the project and flip him for a pick?

Unless McCarthy played — and played well — this season, his trade value was going to keep depreciating. Next offseason, he likely would have fallen into the pick-swap category. By moving him in-season, Teasley capitalized on another team’s desperation.

In the end, McCarthy ended up being a bust of a pick for the Vikings, but they didn’t let him become a total sunk cost. Instead, they got what they could and moved on from a player who was an extreme long shot to live up to the draft price.

No doubt there was enough there from JJM for KOC to turn against him. JJM not just doing the griddy but later saying he did it in part because he was told not to! Piping up with left field BS in QB meetings. Etc.

As for blaming KAM, the fact is the Wilfs gave him final say on personnel decisions. And a #10 pick, especially when picking a QB, is the epitome of the buck stops here decision. Because it's franchise altering. Take input all you want, let KOC jump on a table screaming yea or nay... but the decision rested with KAM.

I assume the same authority holds true for Teasely but haven't seen it written anywhere.

David

What if the Chargers accepted 2/3rds of Herbert's contract, and then weren't binded by his contract next year ?

How would that compare to what Arizona ate this year with Murray?
