I watched a lot also. Johnson hits the hole faster and better. He is a better). Just this preseason several times Peterson has missed the hole. His ypc is down fumbles are up.

I never said Johnson wasn't better. Right now he is.

But he'd struggle if he was consistently getting hit behind the line. No matter how good our passing game, I don't think he would've had the same success running the ball here that he did in TN.

For every hole he hit that AD would've missed, he likely would've gone down on a behind the line tackle that AD broke.

I think he would've had more yards than Peterson, because AD never looked 'right' last year, but I think he would've been well shy of his 2000 in TN. But I also think AD would've had more than 1300 (and a better YPC) running behind TN's line.

I think it was I that was the first to claim that Chris Johnson was head and shoulders above any other running back in the league. [:D]

I think CJ will be better yet again this year.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/4/2010 10:16:29 PM)

AD was the best RB 2 years ago. Johnson last year. I believe they are the two best in the league. Injuries and turnovers will probably determine who has the better career.

AGREED!

Johnson got better last year when Vince Young got his job back. He had a lot more yards and yards per carry with Vince starting and the team started winning.

Peterson is looking less explosive each year.

I strongly hope this trend reverses this year but right now Peterson is heading in the wrong direction. Further, I think our offensive philosophy doesn't help his game. We send half the offense to the point where Peterson is running and that clogs things up. He is not a little Joe Morris scat back that can squeeze through a tiny hole.

I also don't think Gerhart is a good compliment to Peterson. When you have a power back it would seem smarter to compliment him with quick back. Some defenses can't handle power and some can't handle quickness.

As for here vs. TN - no way would Johnson run for 2,000 yards behind this blocking. I agree 100% on that.

But to say he would be held to hundreds yards less than Peterson I don't agree.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 8:24:07 AM)

I think Gerhart will end up showing MORE quickness than Peterson, but will also show some power, and will be a good compliment.

My main concern is getting SCREEN PASSES down.

I'm not sure either will ever be good at blitz protection, it can set them up for injury, and it can be a waste of time if the other team is sending MORE blitzers than you can handle. When teams are overly aggressive, I think you need to burn them with a good SCREEN, or maybe a quick hitting slant, or an occasional QB movement that facilitates burning them DEEP.

John Childress -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 8:48:35 AM)

Teams will not fear Gerhart. He will be relatively easy for 1st team NFL defenses to shut down. He is not overly fast or powerful - compared to NFL players.

Marty the only chance in this lifetime that Gerhart will "show more quickness than Peterson" is if AD suffers a crippling injury.

Neither is Chester Taylor, yet he is and has been a very productive back.

Vikingsfan7 -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 10:31:41 AM)

Does anyone on here think that it would of been a good pick to get Jahvid Best with the 30th pick? I mean he seems extremely explosive and fast. Mixing it up with him and Peterson I think would be terrifying for opposing defenses.

Todd M -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 10:34:22 AM)

I think if you have one of if not the best back in the league you build around that. Using 1st and 2nd rounds picks on his back up is a waste IMO.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 10:42:15 AM)

I see my man Bradford has won the starting job. Good luck with that

I would've given up some top picks for him but I agree with Todd that Best wasn't worth giving up our first two picks for. AD has  plenty of big years ahead of him.

thebigo -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 10:46:58 AM)

I think that KA has seen the light with regards to zone blocking and our OL. He has held showing our new smash mouth mano-a-mano knock 'em off the LOS blocking scheme in the preseason and is going to spring it on the Saints week one.

A man can dream can't he?

If Jake Locker, or some other QB really distinguishes themselves this year, we better at least attempt to make a move in next years draft. As much as I enjoy watching Favre play QB for us, is about as much as I hate his offseason act. If Childress and the TOA leave our arses exposed at the QB position again next year, I start to lose quite a bit of confidence in their personnel decision making.

That's what I was advocating on draft day. We didn't really need a bruiser like Gerhart, we needed someone who can get the ball in the flats and turn them into big gains. We got Cook who as looked good thus far so not all is lost.

Best with a 1st round pick makes a lot more sense than Gerhart with 2 picks

But I would have probably spent the entire draft just about on OL and DBs

agreed

draft best at 30

trade up to get cook

probably would have cost a bit more, but i think we would have got more bang for the buck

but, the TOA went a different route

John Childress -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 12:01:36 PM)

I understand that years ago the Vikings were fast and too small. Now we are in danger of not having enough speed.

Best>Gerhart all day long

Why would we have had to give up our first two picks for him? He was drafted with OUR pick.

RBIrving -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (9/5/2010 12:23:34 PM)

I don't think Best will prove do be an effective blocking back which would make him pretty much useless on third down. I sincerely doubt that Cook would have been available much later than we got him. I also believe that Toby is worth the two picks we used to get him. What was the value of the two picks we traded vs the pick we used? We had to move up 11 spots in the second round and we gave up our own late round 2 plus a round 3 to get him. Our round 2 pick was almost a 3 anyway.

Drafting a back to play on 3rd down when you have Peterson is a very, very bad philosophy!

If lilttle Brian Westbrook can block blitzers so can Peterson.

Any strategy that takes Peterson off the field on 3rd down is a very bad strategy

Lemmings. They'd rather all be wrong together.

We wouldn't be having this discussion if KA would deploy his troops the way it oughta be, get Adrian breathers throughout the games, sit him for 2 or 3 series, as opposed to yanking him on third downs. And it might be a little early in Gerharts career, but I think he will be an effective backup in that role. And probably someone who can step in and be effective if AD gets dinged up.

Bingarooski

By his 4th year, a RB has to be able to block and pick up blitzers! It is not that hard.

Agreed, about every third or fourth series sit Peterson and play the backup - every down for each.

Taking Peterson out on 3rd down is incredibly dumb and will lead to all out assaults on Favre. Gerhart may turn into a decent back but defenses are not going to account for him like they will Peterson.
