I must have tired one before the 'came a long way'. I couldn't get my mouth to chew. Like with sushi. Hated it.

What does one look for in a "good" veggie burger/product?

There are good/bad/ugly when it comes to fake/alternate meat options. We use 2 different products when it comes to beef and both are "ground". One is ground like any ground beef product. We use it for taco's/pasta/sloppy joe's....stuff like that. You would NEVER know. I'm sure that's been said before but we've actually tested it on friends who had no idea.

The other is a vegan burger that I've called BS on multiple times. I've had about 50 different veggie/vegan burgers and they have all been ok to awful. Nothing above "ok". Until we found this one. It's creepy how much it tastes like a real burger.

looks are really important IMO. You see it before you eat it. Outside of that it has to taste "normal". By that, I mean, it can't have any weird after taste. A lot of meat alternatives have a weird after taste that just sucks the life out of it. Once I get that feeling, I'm out. it's nasty IMO>

I would like to have you share sources for those things if you don't mind Jeff. PM me if you'd prefer.
Thanks.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/23/2014 8:51:45 PM)

NP. I'm not ashamed or hiding anything. The grounds are from a UK company called Quorn. We use a bunch of their products but they aren't vegan. They use egg yolks in some of their products but we use:

grounds
chicken tenders (little "grilled" chicken pieces)
chicken patties (like a Hormel breaded patty)
and sometimes their chicken nuggets. I get a bad craving sometimes and load them with Famous Dave's Devil's spit.

You can find that brand pretty much anywhere no days.

The other is more of a local Texas company and the one that really shocks me. We've tried their ground and chicken and I don't like them but their vegan burgers are freakish. The parent company is Kroger food but the "brand" of burgers is part of their Simple Truth line.

I'll try to find pictures.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/23/2014 8:53:37 PM)

Here's Quorn's website. That was our favorite burger until we found Simple Truth but we still use their other products. Best out there IMO.

http://www.quorn.us/ranges/

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/23/2014 8:58:12 PM)

Here's the Simple Truth stuff. It's called "Meatless Patties" but be careful if you try and just grab off the freezer. They also have "Meatless Patties" that are breakfast sausage patties. Never tried them so can't comment.

These look pretty sweet. Need my passport to get them though. [>:]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/23/2014 9:31:13 PM)

You think? We get all to most of their products in about every super market out there now. And, this is Texas. They don't play with meat.

Todd M -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/23/2014 9:42:29 PM)

There's options here but that won't be one of them.

I'm going to tag that one and see that I get a box next time someone's 'running to the states'.

I love shopping in US supermarkets.

This turkey burger is quite good. I have made it a couple times. It is all about adding moisture and flavor. The link also makes a sauce for it which I recommend if you are going to make this.

http://www.food.com/recipe/oprahs-favorite-turkey-burger-from-donald-trumps-mar-a-lago-401510

Ingredients

1/4 cup thinly sliced scallions
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
3 Granny Smith Granny Smith apples , peeled and diced
1/8 cup canola oil
4 pounds ground ground turkey breast
2 Tbsp. salt
1 Tbsp. black pepper
2 tsp. Tabasco® chipotle pepper sauce
1 lemon , juiced and grated zest
1/2 bunch parsley , finely chopped
1/4 cup Major Grey's Chutney , pureed

Directions

Sauté the scallions, celery and apples in the canola oil until tender. Let cool.

Place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Add sautéed items and the remaining ingredients. Shape into eight 8-ounce burgers. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Season the turkey burgers with salt and pepper. Place on a preheated, lightly oiled grill. Grill each side for 7 minutes until meat is thoroughly cooked. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Serve with a side of Mar-a-Lago Pear Chutney and your favorite toasted bread, pita or hamburger roll.

That looks fantastic.

Holy moley Delain....what an intriguing recipe to consider. Looks like a whole lot of preparation but when you disect it not so bad. I'm gonna give it as try soon. Not familiar with that chutney you mention but my favorite seafood restaurant in FL has a great mango chutney on broiled mahi-mahi that I order often so I'm amenable to trying it if I can find it. Looks like this recipe might solve the previously mentioned problems with crumbling grilled turkey burgers.

Great discussion for those of us who love to grill and eat various things.

It wasn't that hard to make it. If you are on a Diet it is just as good just wrapped in lettuce without the bread.

I think what is key is to let it set in the refrigerator. I think it stays together real well because of this and it also gives the meat a chance to soak up the flavors.

I think you could use almost any Mango Chutney...but if you are bored you could make it from scratch...

Some genius in the Redskins PR department decided that twitter would be a really good way to get their fans to show @SenatorReid #RedskinsPride. Oops.

If it was a subversive move to show Snyder that it's time to change the name --- Brilliant!

Just finished reading that, David.

I'm one of the few people that don't care whether or not they change the name.

I'm surprised DS is fighting it so hard. Isn't there just a huge potential to sell sell sell?

Washington Red Dragons.

I'm 1/4 Native American and I have no problem with Indians, Braves, Warriors, Sioux, Chiefs but the name of that Washington NFL franchise has to be changed.

Who cares more, Native Americans or white guilt Americans?

With poverty, substance abuse, schooling atrocities...is it on their list even?

You tell me that Native Americans, generally, HATE any reference to the Washington Redskins and I'll accept that.

Should have never been done but does it really matter now?

TJSweens -> RE: Vikes Water Cooler Thread (5/29/2014 8:44:24 PM)

I think Native Americans are justifiably offended by Red Skins. If a similar derogatory term for any other minority race were used there would be a massive public outcry.

White guilt Americans had more to with the ridiculous North Dakota Fighting Sioux name change.

I can only speak for people that I know and have asked. My wife is slightly less than 50% native American. A combination of Potawatomi and Blackfoot, but, a bit more Potawatomi. Her dad was born on the Potawatomi reservation and has free housing, medical services and other services if he chooses to take advantage of them by living on the reservation. These are also available to my wife , my children and even my grandkids if any of them ever wanted to take advantage of them someday. I just asked my wife right now and have asked my father in law several times over the years about being offended by the Redskins name. The answer has always been that they could care less and it doesn't bother them at all. They just consider themselves Americans and wish other people could just get over the past and move on with their lives the way they have.

Some are, some aren't. But there's really no denying anymore that "Redskins" is a racist slur. And anyone spending more than 5 seconds studying the logo would have to admit it's a racist image. Many native Americans choose to move on, look past it, not let it bother them. But really, why should we, all of us, have an NFL franchise that has such a negative logo and name? What's the point any longer?

That's a healthy way to view life. But - this is up to you obviously - ask her how she would feel if someone decided they would start referring to her, personally, whenever they saw here, as a redskin. Maybe it's the same answer, but for many it's not. I totally get why native Americans don't worry about this, especially if they aren't fans of the team or the NFL. Most of us have enough to worry about without making this a cause, but at the same time, if a new franchise were started we wouldn't put up with 'the blackies' or the 'wetbacks' or the 'slanteyes'. It's not on a par with world hunger, or even putting food on your kid's table, but at this point, with so many people asking the owner to change it, it's a no brainer.

Good idea Prescott. She's asleep now and I'm on my way to bed, but, I will ask her that tomorrow and let you know what she says. She wondered why I was asking about it earlier this evening and I said that it's been in the news recently again. I know that friends of hers have called her Pocahontas occasionally in a joking manner and she laughs and tells them that she is an Indian princess, which she technically is because of her bloodlines. I'm curious what she'll say about it if it were a name given to a team today, so I'll let you know. On a less serious note if we start a new franchise I'm good with Beer Guzzling Krauts. Being one, I think we could kick ass.

I think "white guilt" doesn't really hit the mark here. Perhaps white guilt played a role in the civil rights movement, but I think quite a bit of that was just recognizing right vs. wrong. Same here. No guilt from this white American, just disgust that parts of society insist on holding on to our racist foundation.

Did heterosexual guilt help advance the gay rights movement?

Part of the reason there doesn't appear to be a vocal outcry from Native Americans is because we killed most of them.
Including Native Alaskans, Native Americans comprise less than 1% of the American population. How many of them do you suppose give a shit about football?

Going along with popular belief in here, there are more Vikings fans in Minnesota than there are Native Americans in the entire country.
Quite possibly they need assistance from an outside guilty or humanitarian party.

The very least we could do is evolve a little.

And it most certainly does matter now. Nothing positive can result in continuing to hold onto our racist symbols, history and institutions.

Same here. And those are the ones (like 'fighting irish') that get brought up, however they're slightly positive, and not quite comparable. More like "goose stepping krauts" or maybe 'gassing germans' or 'drunken irish' or 'stupid pollack'. Redskins just doesn't have any positive connotations. It's maybe not quite like calling a black person the n word, but it's pretty close to calling the vietnamese gooks, or chinese chinks. No reason for it. Guilt or no guilt.

Well said, and it brings up a point I have noticed in every conversation in which someone is defending the name. They always say something like "the Native Americans who have spoken up have said they are not offended by the name."

Why don't they say "the redskins who have spoken up have said ..."?

In other words - even the people who claim they don't think the name has any negative connotations won't actually refer to people as "redskins" in conversation. They know exactly how bad that would sound and the proof is in how they phrase their own opinions.
