SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/25/2010 11:17:51 AM)

One of the most crushing defeats in the history of the sport yesterday for Nashville.
I have no horse in that race, and I was still crushed emotionally by the results.
They simply had written a great story for themselves, and then blew it in every way possible.
Complete bullshit that Hossa was still in that game to win it in the end.
How the Pred didn't die on that hit was amazing. Just a vicious attempt to injure that went unpunished.
But it was more on the Preds, 5-minute major to kill the game off, you ae getting pressure, all you do is stay DEEP in the Hawks end, you don't go from low up top with a pass, they do, and it gets sent the ohter way and tied.
The only way Chicago has any chance there is if Nashville moves the puck out of their own end FOR chicago, and they did.
And Joel Ward simply stood and watched the game-tying and game-winning goals. Watch the highlights. A foot away from both goals, and he simply got a good look at them. Do something, anything, take a penalty, you do not let the guy get off a shot that easily.
Simply crushing to lose that way.
Pens somehow get it done. Not sure they were the best team in that series. But they move on.
Sharks come to life the past two games and roll. Doing it without a lot of the regulars scoring, bad news for the rest of the league.
Couple good ones today.

Lynn G. -> RE: General NHL (4/25/2010 1:51:40 PM)

I caught the end of that Nashville/Chicago game Scott and absolutely groaned at the ending. I also don't have a horse in the race, but found myself hoping Nashville would pull it off.

The way that ended, with Nashville unable to take advantage of 5 minutes of an extra man in overtime, and then five seconds after Hossa comes back on the ice HE'S the guy that scores the game winner - - - it sounds like something in one of those schmaltzy sports movies.

I'm interested in your opinion of the hit that sent Hossa to the box. That was right when I turned the game on and just caught it on slow mo replays. The announcers thought the call was questionable, and in slow motion it didn't look like anything too outrageous. Your take was that it was vicious - - - is that Hossa's MO? I don't watch enough other hockey to really know.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/25/2010 1:59:58 PM)

Thats probably what Hossa has going for him here ... its not his m.o.
Lots of us are using the Ovechkin hit on Chicago's Campbell earlier this season that Chicago wanted blood for.
It was almost exactly the same hit, this one was more violent, imo (mostly due to the situation/game/etc)
Anyway, Ovie was booted immediately and suspended 2 games. We'll see what happens here.
Hossa is a schmaltzy sports movie by himself.
Went after much hub-bub to Pitt 2 years ago, lost in Finals
Moved over to Detroit who beat Pens, lost in Finals to Pens.
Kind of a central figure who has to be feeling the heat.
All that stuff was going thru my head when I saw Nashville putting the Hawks away, and I'm assuming it goes thru Hossa's too, but thats too much thinking to put into it.
Just the irony of the play, the characters involved, and the result, was as you put it, the stuff of movies.
The hit itself is another one of those horrible "get-to-the-puck" first hits that almost ended our Wild players career (Foster), and the league promised it would never let those happen again.
Just feel bad for the Preds.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General NHL (4/26/2010 12:16:12 PM)

Lemaire has retired w/NJ out in the first round.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/26/2010 9:02:11 PM)

Weird seeing Belanger and Pouliot and Bergeron duke it out while we watch.
Same old Bel .... do all kinds of great stuff, never finish ..

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/27/2010 10:27:55 AM)

That's the way I felt last year as I watched Unibrow lift the cup [:-]

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/27/2010 10:30:13 AM)

Winding down one hell of first round.
Sorry to see the Sabres and Preds go.
Should be some great second-rd match-ups.
Will get on them Wednesday.
Excited about Det/Pho tonight .... have NO idea how that will play out.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/27/2010 10:33:56 AM)

I'm excited about the end of the Habs/Caps series.  2 weeks ago you couldn't pay me enough to think it would go 7.

Corleone -> RE: General NHL (4/27/2010 9:47:16 PM)

....and Detroit pretty much seals game 7.  Blech.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/28/2010 1:04:53 PM)

Yeah, that's a tough spot for the Yotes.  You finally get a higher seed in the playoffs and you draw a very experienced Wings [:@]

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/28/2010 4:59:09 PM)

Yep, that was simply a matter of time.
Good story, fired-up fans, inatangibles , etc .... all last about 4-5 games of a series, then you have to rely on talent and experience.

Hoping Caps wake up tonight the same way.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/28/2010 7:06:52 PM)

Not good so far.  MAB puts the Habs up late in the first.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/29/2010 7:49:42 AM)

Helluva effort by Montreal, they acted like every shift/shot/play was their last, they never let up.
Have to have that in playoffs. Caps thought they would eventually just outlast them, but like I said earlier, not sure why everyone thought Washington was so great.
Not much different team than thay have been. If they don't get contributions from Ovie, they do nothing.

On to Rd 2
Amazing that all the top seeds in West move on, none do in East.
Winning your division got them nothing in the East.
Hoping to do some Rd 2 previews tonight.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/29/2010 8:56:20 AM)

I think the Caps were great actually (Pres trophy).  They just knew it and decided they didn't have to work hard for it.  Total opposite of the Habs.  They blocked how many shots this series???

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/29/2010 9:52:01 PM)

Good game brewing in San Jose, 3-2 Sharks after 2.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/30/2010 8:16:23 AM)

Philly vs Boston
Never expected to see either team in the second rd, but here they are.
This will be fun, gritty, nasty, balls-out hockey between two teams that don't like each other and have tons of history.
Philly is rolling, and seem more dangerous to me.
Flyers in 6

Montreal vs Pittsburgh
Habs riding the proverbial hot goalie into Pittsburgh to take on the defending champs.
Pitt seems to be on cruise control at times.
Just can't see Montreal having enough in the tank to get this one done, too.
Penguins in 6

Chicago vs Vancouver
All the makings of a great series.
Anything could happen here, with two fast clubs with big hopes.
Developing a pretty healthy rivalry here, this one will get really intereresting I hope.
Hawks in 7

San Jose vs Detroit
Maybe the best matchup.
Detroit just seems rested and tuned up.
San Jose is finally playing well and without pressure the last couple of games.
I never count Detroit out, even against a juggernaut like San Jose. Goaltending will be huge. And not a Detroit strength, imo.
Sharks in 7

The West

Sharks vs Avs.
Mismatch in talent, but the Avs have proven to be scrappy as hell all year. Will the Sharks collars get tight in this round or the next?
Sharks in 5

Underestimated the Avs, but the Sharks prevailed

Blackhawks vs Preds.
Everyone's favorites vs a tough Preds team. I'm not totally sold on ChiTown yet, until they win some tough ones where they are supposed to win.
Hawks in 5

Better series than some thought, still ended the same tho.

Canucks vs Kings.
Intriguing matchup, pretty damn even imo. Kings are better than most think, imo, some talented guys. Vancouver always finds a way to irritate and compete.
'Nucks in 7

Pretty close, was a fun series and the Kings served notice they are on the rise.

Coyotes vs Red Wings.
My favorite match-up. Upstarts vs old guard. Outstanding contrast in style and age and expectations. All the emotionn is on the 'Yotes side, but Detroit will never roll over for anyone.
Wings in 6

Took seven, but pretty much was what was expected, great run for Phoenix.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (4/30/2010 8:34:58 AM)

Did well on the West, not so good in the East I bet ....

The East

Caps vs Habs
Excited to see if the juggernaut regular season Caps are ready to bring it post-season. I think so. They play with reckless abandon. None of these East teams like each other, will be fun.
Caps in 5

Wrong! Impressed by Montreals staying power, great upset win for them.

Devils vs Flyers
The amazing JL takes his boys into the playoffs. Never count him out of anything. Revamped Flyers seem to be hitting a pretty good stride, got some momentum from the final day push.
My one rule? Never bet against JL, or the Devils.
Devils in 6

Dead wrong! Devils were weak pretenders, no firepower at all. Philly is rolling.

Sabres vs Bruins
Really thought Buffalo would be better than they are, but the playoffs could cure that. This will be a scrappy series, looking forward to this one. Not a Bruins-liker.
Sabres in 7

Yikes! Wrong again! My one try at an upset went bad too. Good series, losing Vanek early killed the Sabres chances.

Pens vs Sens

The league pretty-boys vs the unknown Sens. One of these years, Ottawa will play up to their potential. No ones afraid of Pittsburgh, this will be a tougher series than most think, imo.
Pens in 6

Ottawa put up a good fight, Pens move on.

Corleone -> RE: General NHL (4/30/2010 11:19:50 AM)

Pens-Wings III, coming soon to a rink near you...

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (4/30/2010 7:03:25 PM)

Lee Corso on "not so fast my friend"....Lee Corso off.

Wings down 1-nill and the Sharks may have finally rid themselves of the early exit syndrome.

SoMnFan -> RE: General NHL (5/2/2010 7:23:51 AM)

Shoulda went with my gut on Chi/Van ....
The Hawks are a mess when I watch them.
No way do they beat the Canucks in a series.
Sure started that way last night, total domination.
There is just something missing in Chicago, all the talent in the world doesn't insure you anything.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (5/2/2010 10:50:11 AM)

Yup, the Yucks are scary good.  The one thing that can take them out is Lou.  When he's on he's one of the best.  If his head gets messed up he get sloppy really quickly.  Hopefully Quenville lights a fire in the Hawks ass.  That was was a whoopen' last night.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General NHL (5/2/2010 10:50:58 AM)

And, as a side note that means absolutely nothing, Carrisa Thompson is a perfect 10 [:-]
