Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 7:03:51 AM)

For a program record fifth straight season the No. 2/3 University of Minnesota Gophers are headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Gophers will play in the Tuscaloosa Regional and take on Louisiana Tech at 1:30 p.m. (CT) Friday. The game can be viewed live on ESPNU.

Alabama is the No. 16 seed and will face Albany at 4 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Gophers 12th NCAA Tournament appearance.

In total, 64 teams were placed at 16 different regionals on campus sites. Each regional is a four-team, double-elimination tournament. The 16 regional winners will advance to super regionals, from which the eight NCAA Women’s College World Series teams will emerge.

The Gophers had a historic regular season. They started the season on a program record 19-game win streak and are currently on a 25-game win streak. They have won more games than any other team in Gophers history and have a 54-3 overall record. They won their first regular season Big Ten title since 1991 and their third B1G Tournament championship in four years.

The Maroon and Gold are no strangers to playing away from home. They went 38-3 on the road with 20 true road victories this season.

And right out of the gate the Gophers get screwed in the brackets. Conference champions. Conference tournament champions. Best record in the nation, strong RPI, but they got penalized for a 2-2 record against top 25. I guarantee you if Michigan had won the Big Ten tournament they would be hosting a super regional.

They needed Michigan to not get upset in the conference tourney.

Reputation. MN doesn't have one.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 7:32:49 AM)

The same selection committee that just rated the Gophers #7 in the nation decided not to give them a top 16 seed. [sm=shrug.gif]

Like I said, rated anywhere from 2nd to 7th depending on who does the rankings, top 12 RPI, best record in the nation and they even can't get a lousy 16 seed. Can you say "POLITICS"?

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 7:50:21 AM)

On Sunday’s selection show, televised on ESPN2, host Beth Mowins told viewers this year’s bracket was bound to spark some national discussion.

“I know I was taken aback by [Minnesota not being seeded],” analyst Michele Smith said.

Analyst Amanda Scarborough added: “I think that was the No. 1 thing that stood out to all of us.”

Mowins noted that the Gophers were ranked No. 12 in the latest RPI rankings and were just 2-2 against top-25 RPI teams. The Gophers have victories over Louisiana State and California this year but haven’t beaten at top-10 RPI team.

As Mowins noted, all of the 16 seeded teams in the NCAA tournament have at least one top-10 RPI win.

Gophers coach Jessica Allister could not be reached for comment, but the team plans to hold a news conference Monday.

“SURVIVE AND ADVANCE,” tweeted Gophers ace Sara Groenewegen. “Against ALL odds.”

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 7:53:23 AM)

Here is a tweet from Graham Hayes at ESPN:

"In covering something like 40 brackets between sports, not sure I've ever seen worse committee blunder than unseeded Minnesota. Inexcusable."

In his selection wrap up he wrote:

No love for Minnesota
That moment when you finish assembling furniture and notice the important-looking bolt unused on the floor? That should be how the NCAA selection committee felt when it left unseeded a team that went 54-3 and won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles. That Minnesota travels to No. 16 Alabama for a regional, along with Louisiana Tech and Albany, is inexcusable. What doomed the Gophers appears to be a lack of top-tier wins, a 2-2 record against RPI top 25 opponents in the most recent publicly released report. But Minnesota beat LSU and Cal on the road. Its only losses were to Illinois and twice to Washington. The decision defies common sense. If there is no room for human judgment in the selection process, then take the humans out of it and pick the bracket by formula. That's fine. If humans are involved, and they can't conclude that Minnesota is one of the 16 best teams, then they must know something I don't.

Kinda what I was saying

The rest of the country doesn't trust the level of softball here

Now ..............
Like every other Mnnesota team that cries "disrespect!" ......

It's only disrespect if you prove them wrong.
You know how many times we whine about seeds and respect and all the other bullshit, then crap the bed when given the chance?

You only change minds by winning big games.
They haven't played any big games yet.

Shocked and Angry

Have to re-group

Dang right. Use it. Kick some butt.

54-3 gets you a top 10 seed even if you are playing in the MAC. Not even a top 16 seed is insane.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 9:37:00 PM)

SMF is right. Gotta a chip on that shoulder now. Use it, prove it, make em' look stupid. How long did Gonzaga have to toil in the muck before you had no choice but to respect em?

Some schools, some sports, get the benefit. Hell, my Gopher hockey team has been living on rep for 10 years now. It happens.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/15/2017 10:25:21 PM)

I think Coach Allister is taking the right tack with her team.

"I don't think anybody's happy, but you can't control that," Allister said. "Life's not fair, and guess what? Everything that we want to do is still ahead of us."

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/16/2017 1:31:05 PM)

Looks like the coaches made a statement on what they thought of the Gophers not being seeded. The final coaches poll puts the Gophers at #1 in the nation.

This is just ludicrous. #1 in the coaches poll and #17 or worse by the seeding committee.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/17/2017 10:57:58 AM)

We shall see who's right.

We already know who's right. The coaches. Whether the Gophers win it all or lose in the first round is irrelevant here. You don't make the #2 ranked team at the time of seeding unseeded. Even if you use the RPI the Gophers were 12th.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/18/2017 11:04:55 AM)

The results will show who was right.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/18/2017 11:23:29 AM)

The #Gophers break another program record with four NFCA All-Region first team honorees! This is the second time they have had seven total players named to an All-Region team in the same season.

Really???????
Whatever.
So if some team that wasn't seeded number one wins the title that proves that the seedings were wrong. Whatever.
If a #15 seed upsets the #2 seed that is proof that the seeding is wrong. So the seedings have never been right ever in the history of seeding for NCAA tournaments.
What if the Gophers finish 16th or better but don't win the whole tourney. In that case how can the results show either the coaches or the seeding committee right. Neither will be right because the end result has them both wrong.
The results won't prove shit.
All the results will prove is it is impossible to get everything right.

kgdabom -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 10:13:57 AM)

Today the Gophers Softball team embarks on a mission to win the NCAA tournament. If they win this regional they will play the #1 overall seed in the super regional. Tough road to the finals whatever they call those.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 1:56:50 PM)

3 run bottom 1st for MN.

And on our system, ESPNU switches to another game [X(]

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:07:57 PM)

2 on 1 out in second, and LA Tech is already pulling the starter.

Double elim regional.

twinsfan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:10:48 PM)

We are proving the committee was wrong.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:17:21 PM)

6-0 in the second

LA Tech warming up another pitcher

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:18:17 PM)

8-0

Groenewegen helps herself w/2 run single.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:23:50 PM)

Allister smart

Subbed out Groenewegen. pitched 2 innings. Ready for next game.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:37:42 PM)

Yep, she has two freshmen to pitch who were a combined 22-0 with ERA in the low 1's. But they weren't good enough to get a seed.
