Yep, she has two freshmen to pitch who were a combined 22-0 with ERA in the low 1's. But they weren't good enough to get a seed.

Fiser was shaky, in tourney debut, but it's 8-1, threatening again w/2 outs

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:45:30 PM)

Great time to get her feet wet in tournament play.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 2:58:47 PM)

If this was a fight, it'd be TKO

That's coming up shortly(the run rule). U 11-1

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 3:12:07 PM)

Messy 5th a couple of errors allow 2 runs, but they threw out the last runner at the plate

11-3, on to Saturday afternoon, ESPN 2

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/19/2017 3:12:39 PM)

LA Tech had not been beaten by the run rule all season.

Excellent observation. Shows the power of Gopher Softball.

We are proving the committee was wrong.

The season we already had was proof that the committee was wrong. Louisiana Tech was seeded lower than us. Beating them is not proof they were wrong.

Good start to the tourney, gals.

Interesting to watch. Seems like so many hits were bleeders and seeing eye types. We had 9 hits they had 9 hits yet we win by 8.

On TV, they said the approach was to go away to mn hitters, given their power.

If you watch enough softball, the oppo way almost always has a good size hole to shoot pitches through.

Thanks for the tip. I admit to not watching much college softball.
It seemed to me that our hits were just under the glove or the defenders were missing them by inches.

twinsfan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 1:17:33 PM)

Gophers getting no-hit thru 6 innings. Scoreless game.

twinsfan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 1:24:25 PM)

Strike zones always look so expanded in these college softball games.

Gophers got a rare ball call to draw a 3-2 walk to lead off the 7th. Then the ump calls a couple worse pitches as strikes to the next hitter. Strike zone is very perplexing.

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 2:28:54 PM)

Too many taken 3rd strikes. RH hitters give up on the inside corner. The ump has called it all day.

Still no score bottom 9

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 2:38:50 PM)

No respect

Get used to it MN

Walk in the run

HBP that wasn't

2 strikes called ball, and walk in the winning run.

Regroup, win later.

twinsfan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 2:39:23 PM)

What a travesty. Where do you want it, ump? My god.

No way that other kid got HBP to load the bases either.

TJSweens -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 6:30:01 PM)

Even the ESPN announcers were at a loss for the phantom HBP. And two of the balls called to the last batter were right over the plate. I mean no doubt about it. The problem is the Gophers put themselves in position to get beat on bad calls. Let Alabama off the hook three straight innings. Don't know how many times our hitters looked at the same pitch in the same location for strike 3 today.

Steve Lentz -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 7:14:36 PM)

Softball more so than baseball can easily be dominated by an outstanding pitcher. Sounds like we faced a dominant one today.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 7:17:50 PM)

One of the most amazing screw jobs in awhile.
Loved how everyone just kept waiting and waiting and waiting ... for the strike call from the insurance salesman/hail adjuster/major college softball umpire.
Still waiting.
Balls right on a tee, our pitcher KNEW she had to lay it there and she did ... and he still refused to call the strikes.
What a joke.
And agree ... we put ourselves there. Let em off the hook several times.
Now you find out if you are as good as you've been spouting. Pound it, next couple games, or you go home.

That was the part I never got today

After the first time through the lineup, they all knew it was a strike.

And kept taking it. [X(]

Mr. Ed -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 8:24:26 PM)

long delay resulted in changes

The #Gophers will play in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of La Tech-Albany. The winner of tomorrow's 1:30 p.m. game will play Alabama at 4 p.m. tomorrow. If there is a needed final game that would be played at a to be determined time on Monday.

LA Tech/Albany playing right now,started about 745

MarkWren -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 8:29:05 PM)

What I thought we were trying to do was wear Osorio down. And we darn near did! But after the first time through our lineup, having taken a TON of pitches & drawn a BB or two, I expected us to revert to yesterday's form and begin to hack, hard, at the first close pitch we saw. But nope. We just stood there and kept watching hittable pitches fly on by. It was weird...kept waiting for us to spring the trap, and it never happened.

Thought Sara was the far more polished pitcher, today. She made a lot of hitters look like stone cold fools up there. Sad to see the screwing at the end, but most of us (MN fans) know that old familiar feeling--blow early chances to knock 'em out--only to see it slip away late.

Last comment, perhaps will ruffle some feathers: women's athletics still has a LONG way to go, in terms of the professionalism of the production on the field and in the booth. The umps were brutal. The announcing was shoddy, often misinformed. The camera work--repeatedly showing replays of pitches that were uneventful or obviously not controversial--left a LOT to be desired. I don't watch more than a few Gopher women's hockey/basketball/softball games per year. Same for the Lynx. Maybe a few volleyball games. But the dropoff in quality between the men's & women's coverage is stark. I think it's a disservice to the ladies.

Thanks for the perspective

I'm so used to just watching the game, am used to all of that.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Gopher Talk (5/20/2017 8:40:28 PM)

I had the sound off today ... thought they got the best in the biz yesterday tho, Doris? Maybe?
She was good.
As Ed said .. good points tho, they do get second-rate coverage.
I will give ESPN credit, they televise the entire tourney, every game is available somewhere, and thats a lot of games.
