I posted this on the Strib forum, but you can only see it when the forum is actually up... Congratulations to Emily Fox for making the USA squad that will compete in the Pan Am Games. She is in pretty good company as she joins Lindsey Whalen and Janelle McCarville as Gophers to have played for the USA in the past. My opinion for what it's worth is that Fox is going to emerge as one of the best guards in the country this coming season and will lead the Gophers back to the NCAA tournament.

Could this be the year the Lady Gophers return to prominence? A nice win the other night against a DII school. There's no way the Lady Gophers will be worse than they were last season. With 4 returning starters, they will compete for a Big 10 championship this season!

I couldn’t agree more Matt. I really hope Borton gets them back to the elite level quickly. She really got a bum rap for “Transfer Gate”. That situation can best be described as AAU parents gone wild. 1. A regular sight after Gopher games was Brittany Davis’ mom getting into it with Borton over her daughter not getting enough playing time. Never mind that there were 2 good senior guards (Calhoun and Shonerock) 1 good junior guard (Roysland) and freshman Emily Fox (preseason all big ten and part of the US junior team) that were all better than her 2. Natashia Williams’ dad complaining to the media that Borton wasn’t positive enough. He must not have been watching the 2 times that Borton was on Rosen’s Sports Sunday with Williams and praised Natashia at length about how hard she worked to improve her game and was going to be one of the top post players in the country before she was done. 3. Lauren Lacey quit because she wasn’t playing at all. And for good reason. She wasn’t a division 1 caliber player. 4. Jaimie Broback quit in a snit because Borton benched her in their last tournament game. Again for good reason. Brobeck was clearly having one of her “didn’t feel like playing hard” games. The team was down by 10 when she went to the bench with foul trouble in the 1st half and the Gophers rallied to take the lead. She started the second half and picked up 2 quick lazy fouls and the Gophers fell behind again. Borton had enough and benched her. The Gophers rallied and almost pulled it off. Jaimie and her parents were upset and she quit. 5. Liz Podomonick’s leaving had nothing to do with Borton. She quit so she could train year round in shot put and discuss because she is shooting for the 2008 Olympics. Even then she almost walked back on during the season because she missed playing so much. Since then Pam Borton took her lumps for a year with the youngest team in college basketball and finished 5th in the conference in a year where they were picked to finish 11th. Now she heads into the year with a trio of offensive stars (Fox, Brittany McCoy, Ashley Ellis Milan) and some very athletic role players. The preseason coaches’ poll picked them 6th. I believe they will finish top 3 in the conference and have a legitimate shot at a return to the Sweet 16.

Tim Thanks for that report. I never thought it was Borton or she would have been let go by the U. I didn't know each of their stories though so your report was much appreciated.

Huge win for the Gopher women tonight. An upset of a high ranked team and conference favorite shows the program has gotten over its bump in the road and is back on track.

So if the game is played by mere women it can't be entertaining? I have watched a fair amount of womens college hoops over the years and it's actually a pretty good game. Basketball is great game to watch as long as players compete hard and play the right way. I don't care who plays it. I watch mens and womens games at college, pro, high school and AAU level. It's all basketball. Do you have anything constructive to add or did you just pop to disparage women playin basketball.

I'm just busting your chops man.  I don't personally like it, but it's fine.  I love basketball.  I just find the WNBA, for instance, to be on par with good highschool men's ball in general.  I always did like Whalen though.

Dustin, the point is how do they perform at their level of competition. I like the college game, but the WNBA has never caught my interest.

Ya, I see that.  I just have a tough time watching the level of competition to be honest.  I have a tough time watching jr. high ball or HS ball as well.  Unless I have a vested interest like a relative in the game or a friend coaching or something.  That's all.

Personally, I can't stand the women's game, NCAA or WNBA, but I think the college boys could learn a lot from the women.  Their fundamentals are so much better.  But all the below the "net" play kinda' ruins it.  Sorry, basketball is for extreme athletes. 

How can a person watch Karl Malone play the game and then watch his daughter and mistake it for the same sport?

You could make the same statement about todays NBA game vs the 1980's game which was vastly superior. As I said, I enjoy hoops at all levels and from both genders. Each version brings something unique and if its played the right way it's all good to me.

Almost 10,000 in the gym today to watch the Gopher women win again.
Sounds like plenty of interest in "that" game to me.
Borton has the program rolling again, you were correct on your analysis, Tim.
She knows how to win when the right players are on board.

Epic win for the Gopher women tonight....their first ever win at Ohio State.  An Ohio State team that is ranked #13 in the country and was undefeated in the Big Ten.  How do you like them apples??

They are developing a nice mix. Ohm has proven herself to be more than just a shooter. She has developed her all around game very nicely. Ellis-Milan is going toe to toe with the best post players. My prediction is that Buford will emerge as the star when Fox moves on (keep that St. Paul Central pipeline going). Borton is showing she is a pretty good coach when she has dedicated players instead of whiny primadonas with their AAU parents gone wild.

Just a horrible performance last night.  They are so sloppy with the ball, it's unreal.  Wide open players under the basket, only to have a pass sail 10 feet over their head.  No excuse for getting crushed at home like that.  Purdue went without a field goal for a looooooong stretch in the 2nd half, and the Gophers still lost by 15!!
