Florida's very good. I wouldn't call them a powerhouse though. The SEC was extremely weak this year.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:10:41 AM)

Agreed

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:10:52 AM)

Word is that Tubby is gone. Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:13:06 AM)

Where did you get that word panndder?

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:14:21 AM)

Wow. If that happens, I'm shocked. Just didn't see it coming.

panndder, who's your realistic first choice for a replacement?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:15:41 AM)

Someone I trust with a lot of sources in the department.

I'm intrigued by Flip. I'm not really sold on Shaka, to be honest. Would love to get him and then be wrong, however.

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:21:29 AM)

If true (I think it is)...

(1) Moving this fast on Tubby takes, shall we say, some intestinal fortitude.

(2) I suspect Teague knows exactly who he's going after first (Shaka? Flip?). This is an extremely aggressive move.

(3) A little surprised Tubby didn't beat the lynch mob out of town -- did he really not see this coming?

(4) The big-money boosters really must be frustrated with Tubby. With Teague's desire for a practice facility, maybe money spoke pretty loudly.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:22:34 AM)

Yep. Teague seems like he knows what he's doing, but... If Teague doesn't have a hire all but lined up AND someone that will thrill a big chunk of the fan base, chaos may ensue. For all of his warts, Tubby is a guy who is respected and has quite the resume.

That could very well be one of the biggest factors.

BTW, how frustrated is your family with Tubby Pete. Or is it Dave and Harrington that are spurring this? [;)]

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 11:29:36 AM)

Gopher Hole:

Update - one of my sources (who has been very reliable) close to the program just confirmed with me the same thing. He/she said Tubby is already out. And don't ask me who it is, seriously. Believe me or not, that's what I just heard.

Absolutely. With the NCAA Tournament not being over, a lot of the young up-and-coming assistants (or head coaches) haven't even finished their season yet. Teague must think that a deal is essentially a certainty. The only two people I can think of?

-Flip Saunders -- Has Teague been talking to him for a few weeks?

-Shaka Smart -- Will the VCU connection work wonders?

Like panndder, I'm not convinced Shaka's style would fit in the B1G. But it'd be such a national coup (and hugely spur donations and recruiting) that you'd have to throw a boatload of money at him and try it.

My family doesn't come close to booster level, but my dad is still on the Tubby train. He thinks Tubby's a good coach and thus he blames the players for the collapse. But I think some of the big-time donors really are frustrated. And you have to bet Flip or Shaka would turn that around quickly.

There will be those who say that Minnesota should be content going to an NCAA tournament every other year, but Teague and Ellis clearly want to take this program to the next level -- and hire someone that fits their style. That's exactly what happened with Smart and VCU.

THIS

Enough of 'being content'

Twins should figure that out.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 12:01:46 PM)

I personally think Sweens will be very unhappy soon.

[&:]

Some boosters like to stay anonymous.

Also agree that Teague seems like the type of guy who has a line on someone. Don't think he'd fire him and then find out who's available.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 12:05:44 PM)

You have to think Flip is there for the taking if the U wants him, right?

Thing about Shaka is that he's turned down big programs before, and he'll have better options than MN this year. Then again, there's certainly something to be said for working for a boss you know (and presumably like).

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 12:21:29 PM)

It has been widely reported that Flip really wants the job.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/25/2013 12:25:25 PM)

Nadine Babu tweeting that someone has been offered and accepted the job.
