They need to work inside-out. Way too much dribbling on the perimeter, then guys like Westbrook/Nolen going 1-on-1. Work it down to Ralph and Colton and let them take it to the rim--that also opens up double-teaming and skips to the perimeter. We just don't have enough athletes to take people 1-on-1 with any consistency right now.

Tubby said as much with needing to work it inside.

This has really been a consistent them in the last 3 games.

If they dont' get points off turnovers/transitions, they're not good enough in the half-court right now to keep pace.

Reality check at the Barn tonight.
Gophers have a ways to go.
No true scorer yet. No one to bust up tough D against us.
They are fitting the MN Mold .... play good solid D and hope on the offensive end.
Think about it .... Twins, Vikings, Wild,
Where in the world has Hoffarbers shot gone? Cannot buy a bucket.

I heard it has disappeared in warmups also

David Levine -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/23/2009 12:12:08 PM)

Hoffarber:

In 6 January games he's 2-21 on threes. 1 for his last 17.

And he's scored 12 points total in those 6 games, with a high of 4.

Guest -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/23/2009 11:05:37 PM)

I'm encouraged by the fact that Tubby made defense a priority.  The offense will come together.  Perhaps not this season, and too bad, because the 10 is down, but I honestly expect MN to be a conference champ in the next two years.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2009 9:48:54 AM)

For that to happen we desperately need Sampson and Iverson to grow in to their bodies.  They are a bit clumsy still but that's to be expected for 18 year old 7 footers.

Jim Frenette -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2009 1:25:15 PM)

Good win in Ind today, but I think they will need to shoot better if they want to beat Ill Thursday

David Levine -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2009 2:19:09 PM)

Wasn't pretty, but we really needed it. Hopefully it'll be a confidence booster.

Good Call.

Sampson was more aggressive and they fed the meter a few times to get him going .That's something they haven't done much vs zones...easier in man-to-man.

Hopefully they'll face more man than zone as they go along.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/25/2009 8:24:09 PM)

I like the fact that, as young as they are, they don't get shellshocked when they fall behind early in the game. This is the third game I can think of that they had to come back from a double digit deficit.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2009 9:49:51 AM)

Sampson was huge yesterday.  As impressive as his line was, he was even better.  He pretty much dominated while he was in there.  Iverson didn't show up at all.   Good ole' Murphy's law bit us in the ass too.  Hoffarber couldn't hit anything again, but as luck would have it, he nailed one right after an offensive foul was called.  That could have gotten him out of his funk, but alas.....

Mr. Ed -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2009 2:24:48 PM)

Gophs out of the top 25 poll from AP. No biggie, maybe will help them in the long run.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2009 2:50:00 PM)

24th in the coaches poll.

Was Iverson hurt? He only played 9 minutes. Loved RS3's game, easily his best so far.

I think Tubby would like to play Paul Carter more but from what I see his defense isn't really up to snuff yet. JAS isn't a heck of a lot better either but for some reason he got 22 minutes. I think his and Travis Busch's minutes are going to dwindle from here on out.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2009 9:40:42 AM)

No, Iverson picked up a couple fouls really early and Tuby sat him.  From that point he didn't get in much after.

He got into early foul trouble

I don't think I've seen it before so I'm guessing Tubby started it, but after every home game the players go overto the student section and high five with them

Tim Cady -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2009 8:56:03 PM)

Serious D going on at the Barn.

Great link!

...And once again the national media smokes the yahoos at the Strip and Pioneer Press.

[&:]35 Points might win this. 30-20 right now with less than 16 min left.

Man this team is fun to watch, I must confess, I got out of the habit of watching Gopher hoops, until Tubby came back and then still not much last year, never remembered to look for the games.

Call me bandwagon. I might be back.[;)]

Tim Cady -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2009 9:25:00 PM)

Westbrook of the Gophers is Westbrook of the Eagles first cousin. The announcer, TH, I think said they are built the same and have the same number.[&:] Gopher Westbrook is #20, I believe that is Dawkins number on Philly there bud, and Bryant is #36.

Tim Cady -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2009 9:54:53 PM)

[:-]15 offensive rebounds and counting for the Gophers.

Westbrook, clutch shooting 6/9 with 3 3s as of this point.

I guess it took 37 to beat the Ills.[&:] Not a bad call 16 minutes out[;)]

Thanks everyone, I have really enjoyed myself tonight.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2009 10:00:00 PM)

Nice game by Tubby's Team. it seemed like one of those games where every thing went their way. Cool.
