Pete M. -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/14/2009 4:06:35 PM)

I actually thought Nolen was solid today, DL. For me, Damian Johnson and Lawrence Westbrook are the ones who have gone in the tank. It was also good to see Devoe really step up today--he's clearly so much more comfortable off the ball. I think Tubby's best lineup right now is Nolen, Joseph, Carter, Johnson, and Sampson, with Hoffarber, Westbrook, and Iverson first off the bench, and Busch/Abu-Shamala/Bostick/Williams fighting for a combined 8-10 minutes. Right now, those last four guys (outside of MAYBE Bostick) have no future with this team, so why is Tubby playing Jamal and Busch so much?

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/14/2009 4:07:44 PM)

Losses to Penn State earn you a trip to the NIT....if you're lucky.

Goodbye NCAA.  Sad for a team that spent a good portion of the year in the Top 25.

So Michigan State is going to be lucky to go to the NIT?

We're still in 5th place in the Big 10 and 1 game away from 20 wins. We also have an RPI rank of 29 and a SOS of 48.

Paul Carter frustrates me. I know he had a big game last time out, but he was horrific on both ends down the stretch of the previous game, and he showed his tendency to blow layups again today.

As far as Nolen, he was scoring just enough, but he often looked like the best player on the floor earlier in the year. He's come way back to Earth.

We really need guys who can consistently create their own offense. Hopefully White and/or Williams will be able to provide that.

Jake Carlson -> Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/15/2009 12:43:59 AM)

As much as I like Tubby, I'm extremely disappointed in his offensive coaching.  Yes, they play good D, but this team seems to regress offensively with each game.  It's as if Tubby just expects tough D to win a game on its own. They just look pathetically lost on offense.  The other thing that irritates me about this team is the lack of emotion and the worst of the bunch is Sampson.  When I watch this kid play it reminds me of taking my toddler to her soccer game. She had no interest in playing and just wanted the game to be over.   Every time I see Sampson's face, I get this feeling that he's just wanting the game to be over already.  Tubby needs to figure out how to excite this kid.   Hopefully, they figure out something since they have some tough matchups to end the season.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/16/2009 12:00:38 PM)

Offensively this team dribbles the ball waaaaaaay too much. Instead of moving it around the pass they still tend to put it on the floor right away. You can't reverse the ball and get easy weak side strikes that way. The other thing is that they use their dribble right away, pick it up and then can't find the right passing angle.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/19/2009 7:33:33 PM)

Should not be getting routed at Michigan...this is a young team headed for the NIT at this rate.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/19/2009 7:48:20 PM)

4min to go and they're 4-18 on 3ptrs....this is not a team that will live on 3's ... Joseph single-handedly did so the other day...but the effective pressure D that turned turnovers earlier has vanished.

As has Al Nolen...he's really fallen off.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/19/2009 7:55:33 PM)

Not sure what lineup would work right now, but I'd try something to start with like:

Joseph
Westbrook
Carter
Johnson
Sampson

And rotate in
Nolen
Hoffarber
Bostick
Iverson

And leave it at that.

I think I would put both Nolan and Westbrook on the bench at this point. Nolan's inability to shoot is killing the half court offense. He is worthless on the pick and roll because the defender will always go under the screen because he knows Nolan can't hit the shot to save his life. Westbrook has just gotten careless and sloppy and tries to force his offense. I would go with:

Joseph
Bostick
Carter
Johnson
Sampson III

Iverson in rotation with Sampson III is better than the 2 of them together. Nolen of course has to back the point and after that it is anyone's guess as to who to use.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2009 8:27:31 AM)

Not encouraging to hear Tubby say that Carter 'played scared'...this team is in need of someone(s) to step it up.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2009 9:03:48 AM)

Question - when a team seems to have a "freshman wall" as this one has - is there a precedence where they've snapped out of it and started winning again? They've got to win some tough games ahead.

Other than the one game where he went off, I haven't been impressed at all with Carter. I think Bostick is a guy who should get more run.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/22/2009 7:51:30 PM)

Boy we sure needed a game like this tonight. I've been mostly watching the Wild and just checking the score periodically - so I don't even know who has been shining, but their confidence needed this boost of a decisive lead late in the game.

Good job Gophers!

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2009 8:30:55 AM)

That was a butt-whoopin'...Moore didn't play much and that was a factor, but the d and the intensity was much better.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2009 8:54:20 AM)

So how do they keep up that intensity next game? And the next game?

Part of it seemed that Northwestern was having one of those nights where they couldn't make a shot, and we know exactly what that feels like. In some of our losses I've felt it wasn't so much that the other team was playing so well - but that our guys just couldn't get the ball in the basket to save their lives.

So how much of yesterday's win is due to the Gophers hitting on all cylinders and N'Western having such a bad day?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/23/2009 11:23:41 AM)

I hate to be the 'Nattering Nabob of Negativity", but the fundamental problem in our offense persisted. We can't get the ball in to the big men on the blocks. Nolan's complete inability to hit the jumper off the pick and roll has resulted in the other team always going under the screen and denying the pass to the big man, because they are content to let Nolan shoot that jumper all day long. As a result the bigs (Sampson III / Iverson) have to come out farther to receive the pass, leaving them too far away from the rim and leaving bad passing angles for the back cutters (Carter / Johnson). This further contributes the constant problem of the Gophers over handling the ball in the half court.

The win was nice, but Northwestern at best is a team that irritates the crap out of a team with superior talent, but doesn't necessarily win. Without Moore they just don't have enough to hang around.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/26/2009 6:02:52 PM)

Okay - they keep mentioning how long it's been since the Gophers have won at Illinois - so that makes me more optimistic that they'll pull this one out.

Beat the odds Gophers! Lots of points from Westbrook would help.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/26/2009 9:40:25 PM)

41 points on the road...blech...

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/26/2009 9:54:10 PM)

The announcer was dead-on at the end of the game when he said we don't have any players that can consistently score in the half court.

And only 2 in the last 10 minutes

Awful, just awful

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/27/2009 9:50:49 AM)

Spot-on DL.
Heard him say that, and went "yep".
I turned it on with over 5 minutes left, and we had 39 pts.
I've been busy and have missed a lot of games, but what/where/why happened to Westbrook?
Is there something going on?
A couple early wins, especially in Wisc, and he looked like an All-American candidate.
Lately, nothing. Whats up?
Looked to me like Tubby was really, really, disappointed in a couple kids last night.
Not good for them.
Buschs minutes late were brutal. And Hoffarber could get points as a frosh, but suddenly is incapable?

Jason Dorn -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/5/2009 8:32:05 AM)

A Barn Burner last Night.

Hold the phone, the Gophers pull one out of their hat again against the Badgers.  Westbrook resurfaces with 15 in the second half to carry Minnesota to a critical late season win!

GO GOPHERS!!!!

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/5/2009 8:33:19 AM)

Gophs won again vs WIS. Good

I don't know why any team would play man vs MN. Force them to shoot from the outside.

Like the aggressive passing in to the big guys. Sometimes, tho, I want Iverson and Sampson to shoot it if they're not wide open.

Was glad Tubby got ticked during that stretch when they gave up the lead. Lots of standing around.

Also glad Westbrook took over at the end. He's definitely a man/man type guy, and they need him to exploit that the rest of the way out.
He's their best free throw shooter and actually wants to go to the hoop.

Beat MICH and they have a decent shot at getting into the NCAA.

What a rough game.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/5/2009 8:40:14 AM)

Big Ten Basketball .... setting basketball back 60 years.
Teams routinely have less than 20 pts at halftime.
Yuck.
That said, sweeping Wiskey in anything is pleasurable.
