I took a long lunch watching at Outback. Left with us down 17 or 19 see we are back within 7. However, we get a technical foul for whatever reason. Game over. What was the tech for?

SDSU had a better first half against Gonzaga that MN's first half against MTS.

But Gonzaga was just too big and too athletic.

That kid for SDSU, Mike Daum, 6'9" sophomore is gonna be a really really good player. He already is.

kgdabom -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2017 5:50:41 PM)

It always seems to be wait until next year. The Gophers should have a good team based on who's coming back and who's coming in.

I've watched him a couple times.

Did you guys consider that maybe he put too much pressure on himself with Springs being out? It's a tough spot. Probably felt like he needed to be superman. Sometimes that works, other times it does not.

Shots weren't close, didn't really try much to drive. It's a CHOKE JOB.

SoMnFan -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2017 6:30:51 PM)

Interesting to see Matt morph into "early-00's Lynn"
Can't wait to see him morph into "mid-'10s Lynn", once he's beaten down to a pulp, as well.

Told our bud Pete going in ...
We won't get it done.
We will play right into the hands of everything people say we will.
We will commit dumb fouls and be scared stiff
We will not get it done.

Sucks so bad that Springs got hurt. Even though he's been blah recently, I have no doubt we win that game with him in the regular rotation.

Could be, but overall the Big 10 wasn't very strong this year. I don't see anyone going very far.

The Michigan game was probably the biggest game of the year. He showed up for that one. However, He has had a lot of bad shooting games recently.

He did look like he was playing scared today.

MarkWren -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2017 7:48:10 PM)

Proud of the guys for battling back, despite being younger, less tourney-experienced, injured (Nate & Akeem), and yes, out-coached. We very nearly had 'em knocked out there with about 5 minutes left. Only Upshaw could save 'em, and his senior leadership came to the surface. He just carried that team at a moment when they were bewildered and getting manhandled by the likes of Coffey, McBrayer, and Murphy. He'd been there before (ask MSU) and it showed, big-time.

Nate struggled. We missed Springs' outside game, which often led to more inside looks for Lynch & Murphy. We weren't well enough prepared to attach the zones they used. That's on Rich.

All in all, this was a good learning experience for the guys and should drive them to fanatical off-season work. We'll have more horses next year. The Big Ten title is within reach for this group. Coffey will be the leader, as a sophomore. I'd expect recruiting to continue its positive trend as well. We'll look back on this season as the beginning of a huge turnaround for the program.

Basically single-handedly got them back in the game.

Needs to be allowed to take over more games next year.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/17/2017 7:58:20 AM)

I didn't buy into the Middle Tennessee upset hype beforehand. I guess I should have.

I thought the Gophers would have some gumption to handle this first round game, but they were flat. The only time they showed the spark that they had on that win streak to get them back into the tournament picture was that run in the second half when they cut a 17 point lead to 4 or whatever. They looked confident, Mid. Tenn. St. looked ready to wilt. I thought, well we woke and survived the storm, now let's put it away...and then they died.

Not going to sweat it too much though. Compared to where they were last year this was a quantum leap. The whole team is basically coming back, good recruits on the way. Good times ahead.

Phil Riewer -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/17/2017 8:17:24 AM)

We really missed Springs, but even with him it would have been over after the round of 32. Next year with the top 100 PG coming in, Curry and Coffey another summer on the weights, and Fitzgerald (another 6'8" wing) coming back from the ACL, we are going to be scary. Add in the SG they also signed from the East Coast Amir Harris....

Bill Jandro -> RE: RE:Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/18/2017 2:30:24 PM)

Very disappointing not getting amped up for a 2nd rd game.

really has dampered by interest in the rest of the tournament

Good call, SMF
You sure nailed it re the seeding of Minnesota higher than the other B10 teams.
Gotta give you that much.

I did think it was seeded pretty crazily. Wisc definitely should have been seeded higher. It actually winds up screwing teams like Villanova and Kentucky (Wich St) that wind up playing games in the second round that shouldn't be until the sweet 16 or elite 8.

WASHINGTON NAMED MR. NEW YORK BASKETBALL
March 20, 2017

University of Minnesota signee Isaiah Washington (Harlem, N.Y./St. Raymond's HS) was selected the top prep player in the state of New York Monday, earning Mr. New York Basketball honors. The award was announced by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc. Isaiah was selected at the end of a two part process: (1) voting by BCANY and media members and (2) BCANY Committee deliberations.

The Mr. New York Basketball award is presented by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc, which consists of basketball coaches at the scholastic and collegiate levels from throughout the entire state. The Mr. Basketball Award is widely viewed as the top award that a high school basketball player in New York State can receive.

Washington averaged 26 ppg and 6 assist per game. He is St. Raymond's all-time leading scorer at 1,410 points. He had a 48 and 54 point performance this season. He was the Co MVP in the Elite 24 All Star Game. He was nominated for the McDonald's All American game.

He will become the 32nd Gopher to win Mr. Basketball in their home state, and the first to hail from New York.

Washington, along with guard Jamir Harris (North Brunswick, N.J./The Patrick School), signed their National Letters of Intent in November to join the Gophers for the upcoming season.
