Anyone else around during the Gophers real BB heyday?
I'll never forget
Olberding-Landsberger-Winey-Thompson up front.
Speaking of massive.

I see Purdue has kind of gone back to that, loaded up with length and heighth

I was at the Barn for Thompson and Winey (and McHale!), but Olberding and Landsberger were just before my time.

I started with the Mussy era. Brewer, Behagen, Turner, Taylor, Nix and of course Dave the Rave Winfield.

Musselman's first year is when my parents got season tickets. I started going in 76 or 77 and kept going until I left Minnesota in 2001. Now my brother has the tickets.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/22/2019 1:16:45 PM)

Looks like #10 Iowa is moving on as well.

Those were great times with the Gophers doing the Harlem Globetrotters style pregame warm ups. The bench clearing fight with Ohio State kept that team from reaching it's potential.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/22/2019 2:59:57 PM)

Program changer for sure (the brawl)
Cloud hung above it all and ruined how special it was.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/22/2019 3:05:29 PM)

Here is a grainy old video of the pregame. The Gophers come out about 2 minutes into it.

Our boy Corleone made the trip down there!
Good call Chris!

Was a fun little 24 hr jaunt down to Iowa, there were lots of Gopher fans in Des Moines.

The fact that I'm already back should tell you what I think of their chances tomorrow... [&:] Wouldn't want to risk sullying my now 2-0 record when attending Gopher NCAA tournament games (1-0 "officially").

(The full story of the other game is a good one, which needs to be told over a couple beers. I'll tease it by just saying "Bobby Jackson".) [;)]

I went to the regional of the Bobby Jackson final 4 season that supposedly didn't happen. I know it did because I was at the first two wins and I watched the next two wins on TV.

Wow
Kept thinking … I'm leaving "someone" out … Kevin wouldn't be happy.

The Mychal Thompson team was the best we ever had.

My first game at the barn was Mchale's freshman year. Thompson was a Jr I think.

Ray Williams and Osborne Lockhart on that team too. Quite a team...but they apparently went 0-27 [:@]

I saw the games. They didn't go 0-27.

I still consider Bill Musselman the best basketball coach of all time.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 12:30:47 AM)

My curling team was a 10 seed going against a 7 seed in our club championship today. We beat them and then defeated the 2 seed, so it can be done! Go Gophers!

I know. I was being a bit cheeky. It is stupid that they 'officially' strip them of wins. Like it matters. People remember the games. It doesn't matter what the official record says. Just like in 96-97 when they 'didn't' go to the final 4.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 9:57:19 AM)

Really enjoyed watching the Gophs w/McHale/Thompson et al

First game at barn was 82, vs Iowa, when Lute had top teams. And they beat Kevin Boyle and company.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 7:06:29 PM)

This game is about over in first four minutes

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 7:30:57 PM)

Down 13

8 minutes left in the half.

Yuck

No Murphy(back)

Coffey and no one else.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 7:36:30 PM)

Sorry boys, you're down 20 and as they said on tv, the only one trying is Coffey

you have to play the rest of the game.

This could be one of the biggest routs of the tournament.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 7:36:46 PM)

Back to the ugly bricklayers.
Margin will be at least 25 by the time it’s over
NRFPT

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 7:43:13 PM)

2-15 from 3, 2 minutes to go in the half

and a lot of bad shoots chucking and ducking

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 8:20:04 PM)

Coffey is a man on the floor. the rest are scared to death.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 8:25:00 PM)

Down to 11

Coffey posterized the Spartans.

Gophs fired up.

Coffey is a MAN.

Like the defense, Sparty is a turnover machine.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 8:29:23 PM)

Down to 9 Winston takes over while other sheep try to do things, and all poorly.

Get the ball to Coffey you idiots!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 8:51:29 PM)

Quite possibly one of the worst games I've ever seen. Can't blame Coffey. He is our only hope. Without Murphy, we were screwed. The rest of this team, except for Gabe on a good day, could barely hack DIII.

Agreed

The only reason Hurt was signed was the pipe dream little brother would follow to the u.

Should pull the scholarship when he declares. He's worth zero.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 9:04:28 PM)

Nice cameo at the end by Murphy to get well deserved applause.

lost by 20.

Need major roster shakeup.

we were behind the eight ball if we had Murphy. Without him we lost before it started. We tied for 17th in the nation. Good season.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/23/2019 10:07:43 PM)

We were outmanned and major underdogs with Murphy and Stockman. Without both of them we stood no chance. Gabe needs to find some level of consistency. Besides Coffey, Gabe, and Oturu, we need to add a lot of talent on this roster. Amazing we did as well as we did as thin as we were.
