I have my sources and they are pretty much reliable.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2021 10:10:20 PM)

As reliable as an AM radio signal.

ronhextall -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/15/2021 9:28:26 AM)

waiting to see if Pitino gets New Mexico job so they don't have to pay buy out?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/15/2021 12:24:23 PM)

Richard has been relieved of his duties.

I assume this means he gets the buyout.

So I take this to mean he will not get the New Mexico job.

Not sure why New Mexico would want Tim Miles over Pitino. Tim Miles keeps getting jobs for doing nothing.

Ten potential candidates to replace Richard Pitino
San Diego State's Brian Dutcher and Arkansas' Eric Musselman are two coaches with Minnesota ties.
By Marcus Fuller Star Tribune MARCH 15, 2021 — 10:12PM

GREGORY BULL • ASSOCIATED PRESS
San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher has a $6.9 million buyout, but just $1 million if he leaves for Minnesota.

The Gophers are looking for a new men's basketball coach for the first time since Norwood Teague hired Richard Pitino in 2013. Here are 10 potential candidates to replace Pitino:

Brian Dutcher
School: San Diego State

Age: 62

Salary: $1.2 million (buyout: $1 million)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: One

Skinny: Son of former Gophers coach Jim Dutcher is a Bloomington native and 1982 U graduate. Two-time Mountain West coach of the year has ties to the Big Ten as former assistant to Steve Fischer at Michigan and Lou Henson at Illinois.

Eric Musselman
School: Arkansas

Age: 56

Salary: $2.5 million (buyout:  $5 million through April 30; $1.5 million on May 1)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: Three

Skinny: The son of former Gophers and Timberwolves coach Bill Musselman has led the Razorbacks back to national prominence in his second season with a No. 8 national ranking and seven straight wins to end the regular season. He also led Nevada to the Sweet 16 in 2018.

Anthony Grant
School: Dayton

Age: 54

Salary: $1.6 million (buyout: not reported)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: Four

Skinny: After leading the Flyers to a 29-2 record (18-0 in A-10), Grant was named national coach of the year last season. Grant's top player, Obi Toppin, was also named national player of the year before becoming a lottery pick. Before a six-year stint at Alabama didn't work out, he led VCU to two NCAA tournaments in three years.

Craig Smith
School: Utah State

Age: 48

Salary: $775,000 (buyout:  $775,000 before March 31)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: Two

Skinny: The Stephen, Minn., native became a hot name at the midmajor level after he led the Aggies to their first NCAA tournament since 2011 in his first season. Smith, who also coached at South Dakota and NAIA Division II Mayville (N.D.), signed a new contract in February through 2026.

Dennis Gates
School: Cleveland State

Age: 41

Salary: $305,000 (buyout: $600,000 before April 1; $300,000 after)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: One

Skinny: A former Florida State assistant under Leonard Hamilton, Gates already put together an impressive résumé in just two seasons, including back-to-back Horizon League coach of the year honors. The Vikings reached their first NCAA tournament since 2009 this year.

Niko Medved
School: Colorado State

Age: 47

Salary: $775,000 (buyout:  $937,000)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: Zero

Skinny: The Minneapolis native and former Gophers assistant established a history of turning around programs during his stops at Furman, Drake and now Colorado State. The Rams won a school-record 14 conference games, and he was named Mountain West coach of the year by the media this year.

Porter Moser
School: Loyola-Chicago

Age: 52

Salary: $1.1 million (buyout:  not reported)

NCAA tourneys as a head coach: Two

Skinny: Moser made a huge splash as the Ramblers were the last Cinderella story to reach the Final Four in 2018. It was his first NCAA tourney appearance after stops at Arkansas Little Rock and Illinois State, but he returned to the Big Dance again this season.

More names
Other potential candidates who are not currently coaching: John Beilein (last coached at Michigan), Ryan Saunders (former Timberwolves coach), Sam Mitchell (former Timberwolves coach).

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2021 9:39:32 AM)

Dutcher and Musselman get brought up every time they think the Gophers might change coaches. Not gonna happen. I would bet on the next coach being African American.

Pitino hired at New Mexico. Potentially saves in the buyout.

I'm happy for Pitino. I think he played Coyle like a fiddle. Led Coyle to believe he wasn't getting the New Mexico job. So then Coyle announces Pitino's dismissal. Gophers on the hook for the buyout. Pitino gets the New Mexico job the next day. Pitino cashes in from both Minnesota and New Mexico.

ronhextall -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2021 11:39:26 AM)

Well played by Pitino.

Big bank deposit from the U.

New job waiting for him.

Exactly how it should be done.

Sounds like he's just getting a very small amount of the buyout. Just the first of potentially many installments.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/16/2021 2:19:00 PM)

The real blight on his coaching in his last season was allowing a team that couldn't shoot to fire away on threes as if he was a 4-year-old watching Billy Donovan, Delray Brooks and Pop Lewis do that for his dad.

Athletic director Mark Coyle was said to be sitting close to the Gophers bench at recent home games. With few spectators allowed, the sound of those rattling rims had to be disturbing, to the point the AD had to say, "We have to try someone else."

In Albuquerque, Pitino will have a more rabid following in The Pit than was the case during his disappointing tenure in The Barn.

The advice to Pitino from Gophers fandom might be this: Recruit better — namely, shooters if you plan to be three-happy, and a skosh of depth in case of an injury or two.

And, by the way, Richard … 14-61 on the road in the Big Ten. We'll never get over that.

Really? That would be an odd way to go. Smitch hasn't coached in two years and only spent two years as a college assistant. Hard to believe he would have the recruiting contacts he would need to be a D1 head coach.

You'd be surprised. Toronto and environs are a hot-bed, and he still is on TV on Raptors broadcasts. He's done developmental work with elite high schoolers for several years at adidas camps and he's knee deep with several Minnesota HS top recruits. He is a very compelling salesman, and he is great in a family living room because he can demonstrate that he knows how to succeed at all levels of pro basketball and also get your degree. He's not perfect in that area (recruiting), but he'll be fine. His issue might be that he's too strong of a personality for Coyle, but Sam is very relatable in small group and casual settings.

BTW, of course I'm extremely biased here. But having spent a lot of time with him in a wide variety of settings from business to BBQ's to family to jazz clubs to inside the Raptors' lockerroom, practices, sponsor events, etc, I can tell you that people are almost always very surprised about how easy he is to talk to because they think he's the guy you see on the sideline.

Can’t say I blame him. It doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t come back, but he’s keeping his options open.

Mashburn was in my opinion the latest example of Pitino’s worst failing. The inability to develop star players. I think Pitino was a decent recruiter, he was able to land talented players, but their progress stalls under him and they never fully realize their potential. Mashburn is a talented player but I think he would have suffered that fate under Pitino. He’s now free of that, whether he stays or goes... unless he goes to New Mexico [;)]

No. Iowa hoops coach Ben Jacobson interviewed for the #Gophers job over the weekend, sources tell KSTP Sports. We hear at least 1 other in-person interview has already occurred, w/ at least 1 more on the horizon today. Utah St coach Craig Smith is expected to interview in-person.

Brad H -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/22/2021 9:09:21 AM)

Pac 12 is 7-0 in the NCAA Tournament. Didn't see that coming.

Brad H -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/22/2021 1:00:26 PM)

How did Iowa get a 2-seed? Talk about no athleticism.
