CBSSports's Gary Parrish ranks the Gophers #7 in his most recent top 25. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but I continue to believe this team is legit.

That would be a huge jump. I'm thinking in the 13-15 range

Best part of last night's win?
Beating that bloated pig Huggins.
Whiner. Love beating him.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/22/2010 12:04:16 PM)

I'm glad that Myron noted how Hoffarber has not given up chucking the rock. Needs to keep shooting every game.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/22/2010 12:06:02 PM)

It's pretty damn amazing to see how athletic this team is compared to Monson's.  [:-].  I think most of them can even touch the rim.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/22/2010 4:09:46 PM)

#15 in the AP poll.

Hope they can keep the edge and not let this 'get to their heads'.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/22/2010 7:03:32 PM)

Chip, Mo, and Austin for freshman can actually play....we have a very good team......if Royce, Al, and Trevor hadn't had their problems last year we might have made a run last year....

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/24/2010 8:47:02 PM)

Bison held tough a long time. Good game for MN after the tournament to come home and not cruise until the end.

Armelin a sweet reverse near the end.

I agree, the frosh are helping a lot already.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/24/2010 8:50:47 PM)

Tubby Smith said Blake Hoffarber turned his ankle toward the end of Tuesday's practice. As a precaution, the Gophers are expected to limit Hoffarber's minutes against North Dakota State, a source close to the team said.

Didn't look like he was "limited" [;)]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 12:02:08 PM)

I heard that the start of the Big Ten schedule is brutal for the Gophers. If they could actually win most of these games, then they could be a top 5 team. Maybe they're not good enough to do that, though.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 1:28:43 PM)

Poor Bruce. So disillusioned by Minnesota sports, you can't even enjoy the Gophers playing really well (against good teams!) without a qualifier. [:D]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 3:37:04 PM)

David, do you think the Gophers can start out on the road against Wisconsin and Michigan State, followed by a home game and then on the road against Ohio State and do well? If they can do well in those games, they deserve to be in the top 5. That would be indeed a paradigm shift for all of us Minnesota sports fans on the mend. Right now, though, I need to see it before I believe it.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 3:39:22 PM)

Paradigm shift: A dramatic change in methodology or practice. It often refers to a major change in thinking and planning, which ultimately changes the way projects are implemented.

Not impressed with Michigan State so far.

They barely beat Chaminade(!) and Washington this week. And they lost to unranked Connecticut.

Wisconsin is very beatable, Ohio State is good.

But its OK to enjoy the early success on its own. We just beat 3 good teams without our best offensive player - who is rumored to be coming back for Monday's game. You don't always have to be waiting for the other show to drop.

One of the most overused 'buzzwords' in business. Probably didn't need to be defined for anyone here.

Ok. It was for me. I'm trying to talk myself out of doom and gloom. You know, change my way of thinking. [sm=WAVE2.gif]

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 6:21:52 PM)

Word is Joseph is in but Nolen and possibly Williams are out for Monday.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/26/2010 7:29:45 PM)

Very disappointed so far with Williams.

Amazing athlete, not a good basketball player. I was at Wednesday's game, and we were a much better team when Hollins replaced him.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/27/2010 8:44:47 AM)

Who are the best defenders on this Gopher basketball team? Nolen and who else?

Yep:

The Gophers will probably play without a pair of starters during Monday's matchup against Virginia at Williams Arena, part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Another contributor might compete for the first time this season.
Gophers starting point guard Al Nolen (9.2 points ppg, 4.2 apg, 2.8 spg) could miss "a few weeks" with a foot injury and Rodney Williams (6.7 ppg) is "doubtful" due to an ankle sprain suffered in Wednesday's victory over North Dakota State, Tubby Smith said Saturday morning.
Devoe Joseph, who has missed the team's first six games due a violation of team rules, could make his season debut against Virginia. Smith said he will determine Joseph's status before Monday's game.
"Al Nolen has some problems with his feet right now, I'm not sure exactly what it is... it's not really a stress fracture. They want to watch him and get him off his feet for awhile," Smith said. "I'm not sure how long that will be, maybe a couple weeks or longer. So he's out. Rodney Williams turned his ankle the other day in the game. He hasn't really practiced. He's doubtful. ... Maybe he'll be ready by Monday. So at this point in time we're not sure who will be our [starters]."
Smith said he hasn't made a decision about Joseph, who led the Gophers to the Big Ten tournament championship game in March. He said he will evaluate Joseph's academic progress over the weekend.
"We're not sure if he'll be available to us on Monday," Smith said. "We'll make a decision about that on Monday, about his status. But otherwise we're doing OK."
Smith added: "I've just got to look at some things ... some academic things he's got to finalize. So hopefully he's got it done. I know he's been working hard on it. And I know he's anxious to get back out here. And we're anxious to have him back. But he's only going to be back if he takes care of all his business."
Smith said freshman point guard Maverick Ahanmisi and freshman wing Austin Hollins might replace Nolen and Williams in the starting lineup. Joseph will not start Monday, Smith said.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:24:14 PM)

Extremely sloppy last 10 minutes or so for the Gophers. Too many forced shots, not enough ball movement, not enough usage of a major frontcourt advantage.

Gotta clean it up to pull this game out.

Doesn't hurt, of course, that UVA can't miss.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:28:38 PM)

Also, Tony Bennett better get some good frontcourt recruits if he's ever going to win in a good conference with his style of play. Yes, MN's frontcourt is one of the better groups in the country, but you're not going to be able to play "slow it down" basketball too effectively in a major conference without good big men.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:31:02 PM)

Mbawke's still a beast. They need to utilize him and Iverson more on offense and open up the outside for Hoffarber's shooting and cutting lanes for the athletes.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:45:41 PM)

Tale of two halves. Unfortunately the Gopher's domination of the first half wasn't enough to ward off the recovery by Virginia. At least so far...

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:51:22 PM)

Yep.

Mbakwe definitely got away with an offensive goaltending there, but hey, that's fine. [:D] Need to keep charging for a crazy comeback to happen.

Just too sloppy tonight. Though give UVA credit for their defense ramping up a bit in the 2nd half, and their lights out shooting tonight.

Still, even though the Gophers are missing guys, they're still a more talented team, and should beat UVA. Way too sloppy.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/29/2010 7:57:16 PM)

Just a horrible, horrible second half.
