Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/27/2011 6:51:01 PM)

Just when I didn't think that it couldn't be any worse than it already is.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2011 11:30:09 PM)

Obviously Colton was going to be our 5th big man after Eliason, Walker, Sampson, and Mbawke. It would not surprise me that was the reason Sampson was testing the waters.....Walker is a better player than both of them already.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/28/2011 11:33:37 PM)

The roster will be able to go small w/o being very small and really big if necessary in 2011-12.....will be a very flexible roster.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2011 9:14:49 AM)

Tubby has really done a horseshit job of recruiting in state. There are 2, 2011 Parade All Americans out of Minnesota this year. Neither one is coming to the U. Nice job Tubby.

Totally unacceptable.

JT2 -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/29/2011 10:45:55 PM)

What is this current version of Tubby Smith good at?  In state recruiting?  Recruiting in general?  Keeping his players?  Game preparation?  Matching players to his system?  And speaking of that, who else has actually been successful utilizing the fundamentally flawed ball-line defense, besides him and Barnett?

To my eyes, Tubby lost his passion.  Of course I'm the same guy that thinks all the old head coaches are extremely overrated.  Tubby has a little Childress in him.  System over players.  Unfortunately, he has neither.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 8:57:55 AM)

I am SO ready to go the other direction with our coach decisions.
I think Football came close with the Kill hiring.
BB needs to turn to a young, aggressive up-and-comer like we are seeing at all these mid-majors.
A succesful DIIer who has overachieved. There was talk the last time about considering Miles from North Dakota or the Winona State guy.
Really, would they have this program any lower than it is right now? No way.
Time for a complete makeover on what we look for in coaches at all the U sports. Re-treads are NOT working.

He did get Mr Basketball of Minn and Hollins and with only 1 scholarship left, he needed to fill the PG spot with experience. Now how can he get the other 2 Minn players on the team?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 11:02:46 AM)

Who are these players? Honestly, I follow local recruiting somewhat closely and have NO idea who that would be referring to. This year it's Coleman and mid-major type talent.

Here's ESPN's top 100. Coleman is the only MN guy at #90. Hollins is #81 (and bound to rise).
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recruiting/rankings
Rivals is tougher on the two Gopher recruits, but they're both on their Top 150 list and there are no other MN players.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/rankings/rank-2288
Scout's site sucks, so here's all the MN guys in 2011. Only other 3* guy is Moats, who is nowhere close to the player Coleman (or Hollins) is. Plus, our need at forward is less.

I'd rather bank the scholarship that's left or get a risky potential scorer like Lofton.

The point being year after year these guys go somewhere else. If his history recruiting in state was any better, I could see the argument. Wisconsin alone went a couple rounds in the NCAA tournement with 3 Minnesota starters that Tubby couldn't get or wasn't interested in.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 11:30:10 AM)

Yeah, Tubby...why didn't you recruit Leuer to Minnesota while you were at Kentucky?! Why didn't you recruit Jordan Taylor, either? I mean he committed to another school in your conference before you arrived but that's just a minor detail.

Fact is Tubby hasn't missed a target of his from MN since he got here. You could say he should have gone after Lockett harder, but hindsight is 20/20.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 1:01:14 PM)

Fine. What I meant to say is that Tubby's recruiting has been spot on every year. Flawless in fact. Somehow we just suck ass even worse every year in spite of it. BTW, Leuer didn't sign his letter until after Tubby took over here. Jordan Taylor was a full year later.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 1:27:38 PM)

Tubby would never go after someone who had a solid verbal elsewhere, nor should he.

He's certainly not perfect, but I think he's been recruiting as well as can be reasonably expected here. If there had been no attrition or injuries you'd be singing his praises.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/30/2011 1:54:33 PM)

Tubby would never go after someone who had a solid verbal elsewhere

Then he's the only one.

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2011 10:23:29 AM)

Shelby Moats is supposed to be pretty good; uncle saw him play a couple weeks ago. And he's going to Vandy next year, a team that will be as deep as any in the nation: 6 seniors in the rotation, plus Jenkins (jr.), plus 2 good freshmen from this past season, plus Moats and 2 other good freshmen guards. They'll be a legit 12-deep.

Why would Moats choose Vandy (playing time wise) over the U?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2011 10:27:33 AM)

Moats was 3rd team Parade All American. We got Coleman who is the reigning Mr Basketball.

Why not get both, though?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2011 11:05:10 AM)

Well, we only knew that we'd have 2 scholarships and we needed guards. If you're criticizing Tubby for getting Coleman and Hollins over Moats you are, at best, scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to complain about. [;)]

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2011 11:26:33 AM)

good point on scholarships.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/31/2011 10:34:12 PM)

There's a running theme in here. panndder ends up winning every argument. The rest of you need to work on your game.

Lets just say: I don't follow the Twins as closely as you guys. My game is more honed over here by comparison?

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/11/2011 3:28:58 PM)

So now we're competing with schools like South Dakota, Eastern IL and IL State for recruits? Seriously??
It's embarrassing for MN to be included in a list like that. How can anyone defend Tubby?!

quote:

The Gophers added another member to their 2011 recruiting class when Butler Community College (Kansas) forward Andre Ingram was offered a scholarship and committed to the program over the weekend, according to his junior college coach MIke Bargen.

Ingram, a 6-7 power forward, played high school ball at Minnesota Transitions. He joins Hopkins star Joe Coleman, Tennessee Mr. Basketball Andre Hollins and junior college point guard Julian Welch in Tubby Smith's fourth recruiting class. Ingram has two more years of eligibility.

Bargen said Ingram was pursued by Duquesne, Green Bay, Milwaukee, South Dakota, North Dakota, Western Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Illinois State before he committed to the Gophers during an official visit.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/11/2011 4:14:59 PM)

Ingram will be the 12th man, and is an insurance policy in case Mbakwe decided to leave (word is he's staying) or we have an injury or three.

THAT'S how you defend Tubby. [;)]

(Let me repeat: Hollins is one hell of a get)

djskillz -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/11/2011 7:19:58 PM)

Tubby's been extremely disappointing overall to say the least.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (4/11/2011 7:32:11 PM)

Only guy who can come in and start contending right away is Calipari, and he leaves hell in his wake. No thanks.
