A WIN IS A WIN.

You guys will never be happy. Do you know what you're about to endure Twins-wise? AGAIN!

Young Mr. Hollins asserted himself.

Love it.

Finally finished a game instead of blowing it.

Didn't look good late. There are some kids who can play. There are some older ones who just need to move on .... please.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2012 7:12:22 PM)

IMO, this team plays so much better w/o Ralph on the floor. Constantly.

Read right between my lines, Ed .... [:D]

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2012 7:16:40 PM)

They may play better, but Ralph is still at worst an average Big Ten center. He will be missed more than most people recognize.

Remember: Tubby has lost White, Joseph, and Iverson to transfers as well as Mbakwe and Walker to injuries. What you saw today was a team without its three best (on the roster) big men and an inexperienced backcourt. Let Andre Hollins develop a bit more, let Welch learn his role on this team better, let Austin Hollins perfect his jumper, let Armelin be the enigma he is, let Eliason put on a few pounds and work on his footwork, get a healthy Walker back (and maybe even Mbakwe if I can dream), and let Williams continue to learn how to be a basketball player. Next year could be special. I have hope. That's why this is fun.

Either way, onto Michigan!

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2012 7:24:17 PM)

Go back to Madison, traitors.

They have some good open court players. Maybe it's because of the lack of depth due to all of this, but they'd be better served being a wide open offense instead of Tubby's set it up plodder offense.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2012 7:40:32 PM)

Go 3/4 court press and run run run. Armelin and Williams are run/gun/go to the hole guys.

Michigan can be had if MN can get running. If not, the U is not built for the low-scoring/boring offensive game.

I'm kidding around, but I've felt like this team has been primed for something great for about 4 years running. We're due. Do you have any idea how good even a Sweet Sixteen run would feel right about now? [sm=moe.gif]

No he won't. Big Ten average center isn't saying much. And it's average center at best not worst.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/8/2012 9:13:48 PM)

His rebounding is arguably below average for a big guy, but he does share his minutes (Tubby doesn't really ever give anyone more than 30 minutes in a game) quite a bit. Also, his scoring, blocking, and assist numbers are above-average for his position. Everyone was expecting his dad, I guess. It's totally unfair: a totally different guy, a half a foot taller, in a totally different era. Ridiculous.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 8:27:08 AM)

Nobody expected his dad. We did expect some degree of agressiveness. We did expect a lot more from somebody who was supposed to be the prized recruit in a top 20 recruiting class. He has been soft, passive and an underacheiver. What's ridiculous is to call us unfair for expecting more than that.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 8:38:56 AM)

I feel like if he wore his emotions on his sleeve and put up the same numbers, nobody would say anything. I'd rather have a guy like Sampson (who, to my knowledge, never got in trouble and was a great ambassador to the U) than some spastic powder keg who could get suspended or ejected at any moment.

Either way, I think everyone is set in their ways regarding their opinions of him at this point.

I hate to poop in your cheerios this early but this team would be lucky to make a Sweet 16 run in the Big 10 tourney.  [:-]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 8:42:54 AM)

I can only speak for myself, but wearing his emotions on his sleeve would not ease my disappointment in 7.9 pts and 4.7 rebounds and 47% shooting from someone who was supposed to be one of the top post recruits in the nation.

I certainly don't mean this year, but rather next year or the year after. Not counting on it, but I don't think they'll be this disappointing forever*.

He was the 12th ranked center recruit in his class according to Rivals.

#1 B.J. Mullens, 5 stars, Ohio St.
#2 Ty Walker, 5 stars, Wake Forest
#3Tony Woods, 5 stars, Wake Forest
#4 J'Mison Morgan, 5 stars, UCLA
#5 Kenny Kadji, 4 stars, Florida
#6 Michael Dunigan, 4 stars, Oregon
#7 Tyler Zeller, 4 stars, North Carolina
#8 Jeff Withey, 4 stars, list
#9 Kenny Frease, 4 stars, Xavier
#10 Henry Sims, 4 stars, Georgetown
#11 Greg Echenique, 4 stars, Rutgers
#12 Ralph Sampson III, 4 stars, Minnesota

Mullens didn't do that much in college but he didn't need to and left early. Zeller is obviously a better player than Sampson. After that it all gets kind of fuzzy, and that's based on guys ranked only AHEAD of him. If you include the following 11 guys as well he's clearly average at worst. Plus, Sampson is a finesse guy and needs a bruiser to pair up with to be at his best. He doesn't have that his year now that Mbakwe went down. Also, he's played his entire career with question marks at the point guard position, which doesn't help.

I'm not saying he's great, but I'm saying he's certainly not bad. Also, I love making excuses for this team. [;)]

Pete M. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 1:06:22 PM)

Trevor"s told someone I know that he's coming back, and from the same person, Tubby's very confident the NCAA will grant it. We'll see.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 1:09:51 PM)

We all knew young Ralphie didn't have his dads ability.
How?
Because he ended up here.

panndder -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (3/9/2012 2:10:47 PM)

I think the big question for Mbakwe is with regards to his first year here when he sat out at Maturi's decision. The NCAA will have to decide if that was the result of criminality or an overzealous AD. As a rule of thumb, I think the NCAA wants to allow guys who aren't going to be problems (and make the decision look bad) and will draw interest to the sport to get the extra year if at all possible because ultimately it's about the money.

It's not one of the great programs, but it's nothing to scoff at, either. Sampson had offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, and Virginia Tech (among others) and chose to come here. We weren't fighting SE Missouri State and Tennessee State for his services.
