If they don't come up with their own nickname I'm going to start calling them the Tooters.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/11/2011 8:01:17 AM)

Somewhat of a bounce-back last night ... took more effort than they thought it would.
MT is a decent club and played hard all weekend.
This Gopher club is definitely a work in progress.
Strange sched coming up. Will be tough to stay sharp with the Jr Tourney and holidays.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/11/2011 8:30:31 AM)

Jake Hansen's power-play goal for the Gophers with one minute, 46 seconds left was pretty inconsequentional on Saturday.
It just expanded the Gophers' three-goal over Michigan Tech to four. And it was the last goal in the Gophers' 6-2 victory over the Huskies, but it got tempers heated.
Tech's Steven Seigo went after Hansen and Nick Bjugstad of the Gophers also got involved. All three were given minor penalties for roughing.
Then 15 seconds later, after a faceoff, the heavyweight match began in front of the Gophers' bench. Gophers defenseman Seth Helgeson, who is 6-4, 213, and Tech defenseman Carl Nielsen, a 6-4, 225-pound Tech assistant captain like Seigo, started battling. Both their helmets came off as on-ice officials separated them and sent them to their respective locker rooms.
Helgeson and Nielsen both received six-minutes for roughing and 10-minute misconducts.
But while the penalties were being sorted out, the coaches on the two benches started screaming at each other. It was mostly a two-on-one.
Tech assistant Bill Muckalt, a former NHL player with the Vancouver Canucks, stood on a bench and hollered over the plexiglass at the Gophers' bench.
Gophers coach Don Lucia screamed back, so did assistant Grant Potulny.
To calm things down, two officials, wearing their trademark black and white shirts, jumped on top of railings in between the screaming coaches. Quite a picture. Could have been a scene from the movie "Slap Shot."
"It's disappointing," coach Don Lucia said of the final minutes. "It is not the way we wanted the game to finish. But sometimes that happens."
When the game ended, the officials wanted the teams to go directly to their locker rooms. But Tech coach Mel Pearson, for one, motioned for his players to go to center ice for the traditonal postgame handshake. They did and so did the Gophers. There were no incidents. All the coaches were out there to shake, too, maybe with the exception of Lucia.
Didn't see him. But could have missed him.
The rough stuff actually started at 16:49 of the third period. Blake Pietila of the Huskies got called for boarding.
The Dennis Rix of Tech was called for high-sticking at 17:41 and teammate Jordan Baker got a 10-minute misconduct.
For the first 50 minutes of the game, Tech had only four minors for eight minutes but finished with 12 penalties for 43 minutes.
The Gophers also had four minors -- and a game misconduct -- until the last two minutes. They finised with 10 penalties for 39 minutes.
"I personally thought it was awesome," Gophers assistant captain Joey Miller said when asked about the late-game antics. "When they are taking cheap shots it is good to see [coach Lucia] has your back. It is always fun to see a coach get fired up. He's emotional."

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/11/2011 6:46:09 PM)

Gophers coach Don Lucia made four lineup change on Saturday -- the most this season -- after his team's 3-2 loss to Michigan Tech the night before.
"We had different guys in our lineup just to see if we could create a little bit more energy in our lineup," he said.
Lucia had an entirely new fourth line and a new defensive partner, freshman Blake Thompson, for Nate Schmidt.
"Blake Thompson, it is unfortunate he got the penalty I thought he played his best game since he has been here when he got into it," Lucia said. "He made some good plays with the puck and was physical the way we wanted [him] to [be]."
Thompson received a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a hit to the head late in the second period. He had not played since Oct. 23, partly at least because he had mono.
SPIRITED EFFORT
The Gophers scored four consecutive goals in the third perior in beating Tech 6-2 on Saturday.
"It was the kind of effort that we had to have," Lucia said. "We all feel pretty good right now. When the first half ends, we have a piece of first place in the league and a 11-3 record."
"We just came out with better energy mentally. It is more mental that physical."
Sure seems that way with the Gophers who are a mediocre 6-4-0 on Fridays but 8-0-1 on Saturdays.
Here is a look at the top of the WCHA after 14 games for most teams, which is halfway through the conference season:
1. (tie) Gophers           11-3-0       22 pts.
           UMD                 10-2-2      22
3. Neb. Omaha              7-4-3      17
4. (tie) Colo. College     7-5-0       14
           North Dakota      7-7-0       14
GAME OF DEFLECTIONS
Lucia was still talking about Friday's overtime loss the next night. "I thought last night's game should have been 0-0 going into overtime because all four goals went off somebody," he said. "Two went off their guys for us. It is just disappointing to leave a point on the table.
"When you lose in overtime it stinks. There is no point for getting into overtime [like in the NHL] or anything like that. We had a pretty stern meeting with the guys [Saturday] and I like the way they responded."
One player who responded especially well as sophomore defensemen Mark Alt with a goal and two assists. He also had a goal and an assist Friday which meant he had a five-point weekend.
"He had the big goal [Saturday], the third goal," Lucia said, referring to Alt's game-winner from the left circle. "They scored on their power play, on that five-minute major and then we responded soon thereafter getting that third goal. It was a nice one-timer and a nice, hard shot. We had better net presence [Saturday]. We had better puck support in the offensive zone and just more want-to [Saturday]."

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Hockey (12/12/2011 10:12:34 PM)

I missed the game on Saturday, but I did see a lot of pucks turned over in the defensive zone on Friday night. I guess that's going to happen in a college game sometimes, though.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/8/2012 9:04:54 AM)

Gophers are 6-6-1 since the emotional sweep of UND at Mariucci
They were 9-1 at that time.
Another MN team scuffling, shuffling, and stumbling.
What the hell. [X(]

Gopher Women's hockey rated #1

Time for them to run into a losing streak.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/14/2012 12:04:19 PM)

Pretty decent effort last night in sue territory
Lots of action
Should be a doozy tonight
My oldest son will be that one dude in the whole bldg with a gopher jersey on [:D]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/15/2012 2:12:44 PM)

Holy sweetness batman
That was fun
And in typical sue fashion, cannot take losing like normal people
Start a line brawl
Why does the NCAA allow some people to live by their own rules?
Why are there never any punishments for sore loser assholes?
It's not just in mn vs und games, they're jackasses anytime they lose.
Led by thugs, I guess what can you expect.
I have personal knowledge of the trouble starter last night, and all I can say is I'm not surprised.
Didn't ruin a special night tho. Looks like some magic is back.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/15/2012 4:07:37 PM)

Shoot - I turned the channel shortly after time ran out so it sounds like I missed the "fun." I saw a bit of a scrum right when the horn blew, but then everyone separated and gathered on the ice. Did they start up a fight instead of the traditional hand shake?

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/15/2012 4:07:50 PM)

Now if we could just win on Friday nights...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/15/2012 8:44:08 PM)

They simply never accept a loss
Their biggest goon jumped our smallest guy in the freaking handshake line
That's hockey's biggest no no
You simply don't do it
Wait, they do it every time they lose
Classless.
Luckily we always have some guys who don't take their cheap crap and are willing to give it back when pushed to the max
Games like that you are happy to have guys like ambroz and helgeson on roster

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/16/2012 6:40:50 PM)

I stand corrected.
Und for the first time ever, takes some action and strips Ben blood of his captains letter.
Glad they recognized what an embarrassment that action was.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/16/2012 8:34:14 PM)

Good to hear. I wonder if they were contacted by anyone in the WCHA with a complaint.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/17/2012 8:49:51 AM)

That was hysterical. "What a bunch of hose heads."

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/17/2012 8:58:00 AM)

I like "go form your own league"
Exactly.
Done with those clowns.
Go play Canadian jr a
That's what they've always built their team for.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/17/2012 10:23:43 AM)

3 of 4 from UND for the year? Not bad.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/18/2012 1:34:13 PM)

Glad the "handshake debacle" got national play yesterday ... and should be embarassing to UND.
Its a sacred thing, idiots.
If you notice, Ambroz got involved to protect the littlest guy on the ice (Rau) from the biggest (Blood).
And all Ambroz did was stop it from escalating.
I will give credit to the rest of the Sue for not pig-piling on like usual.
Lets hope its over, and doesn't happen again. Guess we'll see.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 8:00:13 PM)

Good first period without a score to show for it. Can they win on Friday night?

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 9:07:42 PM)

Just watched a five minute power play that looked a lot like a middle school dance. Sheesh.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 9:18:55 PM)

Pull the goalie, score. Niiiiiiiceeeeeee.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 9:22:20 PM)

And...we give it right back. Wow, that's...that's just awful. [X(]

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 9:24:27 PM)

Crap.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/20/2012 9:25:19 PM)

Man, that puts me in a poor mood. Wolves better beat the Clip.
