Has anyone heard how the Gopher women did in this afternoon's outside game? The website hasn't been updated.

{Edit: nevermind. I see that they won 4-0!}

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/17/2014 10:32:01 PM)

Gophers win 1-0. Was that a good game? Every time I flipped over it seemed pretty sluggish.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/18/2014 6:58:59 AM)

It was a pretty boring game to be honest. The ice was too cold so the puck was doing a lot of bouncing around. Lots of dump and chase hockey with very little passing plays. It was nice to see them get the win, but I am glad we are done with those gimmicky outdoor games for a while now. Looking forward to todays game back indoors where they can play their game and not depend on a dump and chase puck luck game.

I don't know if it was all the empty area around the rink, but it looked like they were skating on a smaller surface. Probably an optical illusion

I think it was an NHL sized rink, but not positive.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/18/2014 9:36:06 AM)

It was. And while i understand the gimmick, it was a total screw job.

Let see if this makes sense. Take the #1 in the nation who relies on speed and puck movement and have them play a home game, outside, on shitty ice and on a smaller rink.....l.[&o]

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/18/2014 1:49:02 PM)

I agree with the above - a boring game. Back inside Mariucci please, where the players' actual skillsets will be on display.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/18/2014 6:34:13 PM)

Natty hat trick for Warning. 3-2 after 2. Never thought he would become a big scorer for us. He's been a huge part of our success this year.

Diminutive Vancouver Canuck centre Jordan Schroeder has sufficiently recovered from ankle surgery and will play this weekend, only it will be for the Canucks' Utica Comets farm team.

The Comets' next two American League games just happen to be Friday and Saturday in Abbotsford against the Heat so Schroeder won't have far to travel. Officially, he will be on a conditioning stint.

“Jordan hasn't played in a while and we think, and he thinks, it would be in his best interest to get a couple of games under his belt,” explained Canuck interim head coach Mike Sullivan following practice Wednesday. “Our minor-league schedule really worked out in our favour as far as the timing of him being ready to play. So we've got an opportunity to allow him to play in a couple of games close by and that's what we're going to do with him.”

Schroeder, the Canucks' first pick in the 2009 entry draft, has appeared in just three NHL games this season due to recurring ankle issues. He fractured his left ankle blocking a shot in a Sept. 21 exhibition game in Edmonton, returned Oct. 15 in Philadelphia and then fractured the same ankle again Oct. 19 in Pittsburgh in a goalmouth collision.

He underwent surgery Oct. 31 and had three screws inserted in the ankle. At practice Wednesday, the 5-8 Schroeder was skating on a line with David Booth and Zack Kassian as their regular centre, Brad Richardson, was given “a maintenance day” after being slashed by Oiler Jordan Eberle in Tuesday's 2-1 Canuck victory.

Sullivan said Richardson was fine, which means he'll be available for Thursday's home date against Shea Weber and the Nashville Predators. Henrik Sedin (ribs) did not skate Wednesday and remains “day-to-day,” according to Sullivan.

Schroeder, meanwhile, is anxious to play some games.

“It's been a long journey and it's good to be back,” said the 23-year-old from Lakeville, Minn. “It's been a tough start to this year but that's the way it goes sometimes. You go through adversity and you have to build off it. It's all in the past now and I'm just looking forward.”

If and when Schroeder rejoins the Canuck lineup, he may be given a top-six role assuming Henrik remains on the sidelines.

“I'm just worried about getting back in the lineup,” he said. “But if I get the opportunity, I have to try and seize it.”

Celebratin the 40th anniversary of the '74 Championship Team this weekend.
Damn.
I'm.
Old.
Loved that era. Some wild boys.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:07:48 PM)

We're losing to Michigan State? At Mariucci? How the hell is that even possible? BSU is better than Michigan State. This would be an embarrassing loss. Can't let it happen. 2-1 with at the halfway point. Still plenty of time. But I have a very bad feeling about this.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:12:20 PM)

Didn't realize the Gophs were undefeated in the B10. Not really surprised, but didn't notice it.

Can't expect them to win them all.

But losing to MSU? That would be a bit of a surprise.

Although, and I'm sure he'll remind me, SMF warned me no B10 team would be a gimme.

twinsfan -> This is depressing (1/31/2014 9:24:55 PM)

This is depressing. Really depressing.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:33:27 PM)

You have to score on those late power plays. Of course having two pipes jump out and block a shot doesn't help.

Tie it up early in the third and I like our chances.

If we don't score in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd period, we're done.

If we score early, we win. I agree.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:38:16 PM)

I'm jealous of Condon's hair.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:48:56 PM)

YES! We scored within 5 minutes and now we'll win!!

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:50:05 PM)

Hold the phones. Might be disallowed. [:@]

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:50:54 PM)

That's not gonna stand.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:52:07 PM)

wow.....rigged for the Gophs. [sm=buttrock.gif]

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 9:54:52 PM)

The explanation was that because he didn't make a kicking motion it's a good goal - which sounds correct to me from what I know of the rules. No rigging, just a goal after some good hustle.

Now we need to get another quick one to take the full wind out of the Mi. State guys.

Maybe, but I'm not so sure. Looked questionable to me. Seems wrong that we get a goal when our player appears to turn his skate so it takes a nice deflection into the goal, while his stick is 6 feet from the ice.

I'd like SMF's and Jesser's interpretation of that ruling.

All I can think is if that was the opponent's goal, I'd be pissed about the ruling.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 10:02:09 PM)

Lynn, the Gophers are your sports version of Obama. [:D]

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Hockey (1/31/2014 10:10:22 PM)

We've been outplayed since we tied it up. Very surprising. Now we have a penalty with 4 minutes left. Gonna have to hold 'em here and win it in OT. Unfortunately I'd be OK with a tie at this point. [>:]
