Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/17/2008 9:08:35 PM)

Nice kill to start the 3rd, we needed that.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/17/2008 9:25:56 PM)

Really nice pass from the 'rook' to get us the 3rd goal.  We need to stop the BS penalties though.  That may come back to haunt.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/17/2008 9:42:34 PM)

Holy schnikies.  Great game.  The "others" had 10+ power plays and they didn't score.   My boys, 1-0.  I'll take it, but it wasn't pretty.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/18/2008 7:44:17 AM)

Must be nice to be Ness and Schroeder ....
I've seen them play at about 4 different levels at least, and first day, they're the top players.
Amazing talent in those two. At least two Nat Champs if they stay more than a year or two.
This is a club capable of contending by next year for it all. Decent Junior class, huge Freshmen class.
St Cloud did nothing until Donny shortened his bench to his "vets" at the end, and it cost us.
Terrible decisions the last threee minutes from some guys who should know better.
No urgency at all when it was needed to get the puck out.
Kangas SAVED that game in the last minute. He's the first goalie we've had since Stauber.
Didn't need him for most of the game, we dominated puck possession/territory (with lots of freshmen playing their first WCHA games).
Matson looks great. Stoa is huge and needs to carry the load. Carman seems to have finally gotten his act together, a solid player.
Guys like Barribal are the x-factors here. Play to their potential? We'll be great. Play down? We won't.
Good to see you in here last night Matt. Good job. Can always count on Jeff.
Should be another barn-burner tonight. Real Gopher puck fans need to get out and see these kids...
Ness is a special, special player.
I chuckled last year when people in my circle said he'd never make it at the U. Make it? He'll be on the Gopher Mt Rushmore along with Crowley/Martin/Leopold. He's Gretzky-like in that size/speed aren't that important when you see and anticipate like he can. Smartest player on the ice.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/18/2008 10:56:50 AM)

I suspect Kangas (assuming he'll play) will have a much sharper night tonight.  Unfortunately I probably won't see much of it if the game is on at the same time as the Rays tonight.  The Kangas we saw at the end of the 3rd period looked a lot like the one we saw most of last season.  Time for some consistency tonight.  Consistency....uh oh...I'm sounding like Joe Morgan.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/18/2008 11:01:53 AM)

You better be careful Matt, you're in Husky-territory.  [&:]
I've lost track of Hanowski from LFalls, did he go directly to St Cloud, or is he USHL-ing it?
I'll look it up when I have time.
Festler looks good for them. His brother is playing at Hamline with a player I used to coach, they have a really nice D3 team there.
LFalls has turned out some incredible talent the last 5 years. (from 2 families)
Was up in Motley last weekend, shoulda looked you up.
Got stuck on Hwy 10 at 8pm on Sunday night, forgot what a nightmare that can be.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/18/2008 11:03:21 AM)

I've watched Kangas play since he was a squirt.
What a great story. I know he didn't look great last night, but I'll never knock that kid.
He's been told his whole life he'd never make it, and he has. Great, great kid.
Has worked his ass off to get where he is.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/18/2008 11:52:10 AM)

It's great when St. Cloud State beats the Sioux.  Other than that, the existence of St. Cloud State is immaterial to the world we live in.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/19/2008 7:50:27 AM)

Nothing like a sweep against a WCHA contender to start the season.
Beats the 0-4 jump we got last year.
This is going to be a fun team to watch. Freshmen will push the Juniors along.
Schroeder continues to impress. Special, special player.
Kangas still winning games. Great crowd. All is good in Gopher-Land right now.

Jim Frenette -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/19/2008 9:14:38 AM)

My brother was at the Mankato/UND game Sat night and witnessed a hat trick with all 3 goals being shorthanded goals. The kid that scored them just happened to be the son of the guy that brought my brother to the game.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/19/2008 9:22:29 AM)

Aye.
Very cool Jim.
Zach Harrison out of Shattuck.
Thats about as odd of a stat as you'll ever have in a hockey game.
1 SH goal is huge, 2 is unheard of, 3 is a miracle.
(altho the 3rd was an empty-netter).
Big win for MSU over the Sioux. I see UND earned a split with a late goal last night.

I guess that was the 5th time in NCAA history. I thought that was high. The kid's dad moved here so his son could play at Shattuck and he lives in the Apt complex my brother does. My brother went to school at UND so it was tough to go there and not pull for the Sioux

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/19/2008 9:34:58 AM)

The sacrifice of hockey parents from other areas of the country to make sure their kids get to play at top MN schools is astounding to me.
I've heard stories that are incredible. Thats a pretty common one there in Shattuck.
It says a lot for the game and its discipline that many more of them don't end up causing trouble.
It's typical for an 18-year old at any of the WCHA schools to have not spent regular time at "home" since they were probably 15 or 16.
It's rare to have a "normal" life and still make it.
Incredible commitment and sacrifice from the kids and their families. In pursuit of a dream.

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/20/2008 3:18:47 PM)

GO GOPHERS!!!!

Great start with a sweep of the Huskies.  Power play is still suspect, much crisper passing and defensive zone discpline. Great job on the penalty kill.  Overall a much faster/physical team, still have to get some offense.

Good luck Jeff
Get things turned around
Hope your love for Gopher Pucks can help get you thru a tough time in your life.
Addiction can happen to anyone it seems.

Jason Dorn -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/25/2008 11:25:15 AM)

I have never seen so many ticky tack calls in a game.  Half of them were players playing hockey.

Way to come back from 2 down in that environment.  Any sort of PP and it wasnt close, another great night for the penalty kill.  Outshot the Badgers and controlled the play.  Very good with the puck in the D zone, limited turnovers, though still a couple that were ill advised.

A point is a point especially in Madison.  Another strong, determined performance.  Have to get the PP going and finish scoring opportunities.

GO GOPHERS!!!!!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/26/2008 9:02:47 PM)

Way to lay the wood on those critters.  1-0 GG's after 6 seconds.  What took so long???

Capn' Stoa made it 2-zippy not too long after.  Kangas let in one of the worst goals I've seen but he didn't have a rough night overall.  It got super-sloppy after a while.  Hopeuflly nobody got injured.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/27/2008 12:47:40 PM)

3 out of 4 pts.
Good weekend.
Most-happy that we survived the usual "Friday Night Testosterone Challenge".
Friday nights, Gopher teams need to just survive.
You know you're going to get all the balled-up angst from the Gopher rejects.
Weather it, show up Saturday night, and let talent decide things.
I don't remember Eaves being a hack when he played, but he sure is teaching it.
The Badgers didn't play "physical", they played dirty.
I'm into bone-crushing hits myself, but that means with your stick and elbows down.
Good start to the year. Getting points from every game so far (all rivals) is a big boost.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/31/2008 7:33:37 PM)

More of the same between MSU/Gophs
Great tending, great action
A barn-burner
And ... they don't like each other. [;)]
Love the MN Hockey weekend they are holding.
Great idea ... now they need to invite Bemidji as well.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (10/31/2008 9:33:57 PM)

Outgoaltended, as usual.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/1/2008 8:44:37 PM)

Yuck...I think Kangas needs to sit.  Sorry So.Mn.Fan....he allows too many soft goals at inopportune times.

Matt Dahl -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/1/2008 8:52:16 PM)

OK!....tie game!  Now prove me wrong, Kangas, and don't give one right back.  That seems to be par for the course for you lately.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/1/2008 9:22:38 PM)

Am I gonna have to start a WOW![:-] Fan Club over here for my boy? [&:]
He'll be fine.
The least of our troubles, my friend. [;)]
3-2 after 2.
Need this win. Shouldn't drop games to Mankato. But they sure give us fits lately.
I saw last night Jutting is something like 3-22 against the U.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/1/2008 9:25:21 PM)

Schroeder is one hell of player.
He was one I thought would struggle with the step to the WCHA.
Nope. Great vision and anticipation.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: RE:Gopher Hockey (11/1/2008 9:41:14 PM)

Listening to Wally and Glen Sonmor do the Gopher games is like listening to my family do it ...
They take "Homer" to ridiculous levels. Its hilarious. [&:]
