I love how OSU backers are pretending that Tressel is some innocent by standard here and the "fall guy" for the athletes.  Like he hasn't known about all of this and just turned his back [&o]

Not what I meant if you're talking about me.
I'm saying ... if you are in charge, and you decide to cheat (repeatedly) ... it will ctach up to you and the same kids you bent over for, will be the ones sealing your fate.
Wasn't exonerating him a bit, in fact, its ALL on him imo.
He's the dipshit for screwing up a great job in a place where they will back anyone who wants to win.
Lets face it ... you probably have to cheat to get the best of the best (no matter how far the NCAA wants to bury their heds in the sand and deny that)

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (5/31/2011 3:48:09 PM)

I'm sorry man.  Bad timing post on my part.  I was talking about some buddies that I've talked to who are HUGE OSU fans.  They actually are trying to convince people that Tressel was blind about this.    I have no proof but I contend he not only knew about it all, he probably arranged some of it.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (5/31/2011 4:12:43 PM)

No problem man, I was more explainign the first post I made on it ... which did kinda sound like I was making excuses for him.
Wasn't how I wante dit to come off.
I loved the Cheaty McSweater column. He always appeared to me to be a "smiling at you while peeing on your leg" kinda guy.

He admitted that he knew and that's why the 5 game self imposed suspension

Regional kid getting a ride:

CALEDONIA - Carl Fruechte drove to the golf course where his son was working to give him the news Tuesday. The University of Minnesota football team had just offered Isaac Fruechte a full ride. The dream finally came true.
The 2010 Caledonia High School graduate, who played last season for the Rochester Community and Technical College, is going to be a Golden Gopher.
"I was pretty stunned right away," Isaac said of the news. "I didn't know what to think. It hasn't sunk in even yet. I feel like there's still work to be done. It's a good feeling but it'll be way better when I'm up there.
"I've been a Gophers fan since I knew what football was. It's always been my dream to play for the Gophers and hopefully win and star up there."
Isaac went on to thank his high school and RCTC coaches ... and his math teacher.
"Yeah, my math teacher, for sure," he laughed.
Initially, Isaac, who recently ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, wanted to walk on at Minnesota after high school, but his math score wasn't good enough to get into the school.
"His math grade here in Caledonia really hurt him," said Carl, Isaac's father, who was Caledonia's football coach during Isaac's time there. "He wasn't the best at math and that is what it is.
"But he's taken care of that at RCTC. He's gone through that whole process to get his (associates) degree. He has a 3.1 GPA."
The plan now is for Isaac to redshirt his sophomore year at RCTC, graduate in December and be at Minnesota for spring football.
He will have three seasons of eligibility.
For the last month, Carl and Isaac have been in contact with Minnesota coaches.
"Coach Pat Poore - the wide receivers coach - had been in contact with Isaac," Carl said. "He came down to Caledonia and talked for a few hours.
"And about three weeks ago we made a trip up there and met with the quarterback coach (Jim Zebrowski) and (head) coach (Jerry) Kill and laid things out."
Thinking ahead to next season, Isaac feels he's ready.
"I'm not nervous," he said. "I'm excited for the opportunity to try and go up there and make plays."
Isaac caught 29 passes for 788 yards and eight touchdowns as the No. 2 receiver for RCTC (10-2) last season. At Caledonia, he was part of back-to-back MSHSL Class AA state championships.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (7/20/2011 8:24:02 AM)

http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/125849088.html

Philip Nelson was only a sophomore at Mankato West, had barely begun the process of choosing where to play college football, but he had already made up his mind. "I remember telling my dad, 'There's no way I'm going to be a Gopher,'" Nelson said. "Ruled them out right away."
He laughs at the memory, because now he's got a new one: Last February, a full year before he could sign a letter of intent, Nelson, widely considered the most promising prep quarterback in Minnesota since Adam Weber, found himself in Jerry Kill's office, delivering an entirely different message: I'm yours.
"I'm a home-grown Badger [his father, Pat Nelson, played for the Badgers], and everybody thought I was automatic for Wisconsin," said Nelson, who has family in Madison. "But I don't want to leave Minnesota. That's how powerful Jerry Kill was to me."
It's a common refrain as Kill and his assistants slowly put together their first real recruiting class. The new coach, like most of his predecessors, said keeping Minnesota's most talented high school players at home would be a priority. At least initially, he's having some success.
Already, four Minnesota seniors-to-be have promised to play for Kill -- five if you count Hopkins receiver Andre McDonald, who committed last spring but has since said he is delaying his final decision. The Gophers also have a commitment from wide receiver Isaac Fruechte, who played last year at Rochester Community and Technical College.
Nelson signed on early, and offensive guard Isaac Hayes of St. Thomas Academy committed to the Gophers earlier this month. Both players had scholarship offers from such high-profile programs as Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Iowa. "With Hayes and [2011 freshman] Tommy Olson, you've got the inside of your line locked down for three or four years," said Matt O'Connell, an analyst for Gopher Illustrated, a rivals.com affiliate that closely tracks college recruiting.
McDonald, rated the top prep player in the state by the website, began wavering after a recent scholarship offer from Ohio State. Still, "the in-state players have really bought into Kill and what he's trying to do. They like his honesty, they like his vision for the program, and he's got a track record for winning," O'Connell said. "The in-state class is deeper this year, in terms of recruitable talent, than in past years. That said, [Kill and his staff] are targeting more in-state kids than other coaches did."
It's not just Minnesotans, of course; the rivals.com-affiliated website has confirmed 11 commitments from out-of-staters, including four players this month from Miami Central High. And some other highly recruited in-state players are still considering the Gophers, such as offensive linemen Nick Davidson of Eden Prairie and Jonah Pirsig of Blue Earth, tight end Will Johnson of Osseo and linebacker Nick Rallis of Edina.
But it's also becoming clear that the Gophers coaches don't rely on outside evaluations to narrow their focus. "They don't seem to care whether guys have other offers or not," O'Connell said. "They're not afraid to be the first team in on a guy, and that says something about their confidence in their ability to develop the players they like."
The NCAA strictly prohibits coaches from publicly commenting on recruits until after they have signed letters of intent, so Kill could offer no details about his haul. But "we certainly feel good about where we are now," he said earlier this month. "I like our approach. I think it's going well. We've worked very hard at it."
Part of that work paid off right away when Nelson met assistant coaches Pat Poore, Jim Zebrowski and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, who made it clear how impressed they were with the 17-year-old quarterback. "They told me right off the bat that I'm their No. 1 guy, that I'm the future at quarterback," said Nelson, who led Mankato West to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the state quarterfinals last fall.
Yet it was Kill's honesty about what would be expected of him that really sold the teenager, who had already paid informal visits to Iowa, Iowa State and Wisconsin. "He said they're going to bring in other guys, too, and that they're going to make me work really hard" to win the starting job, Nelson said, and sure enough, Mitch Leidner of Lakeville South made a verbal commitment in June. "There's something about the new staff. They didn't guarantee anything, but they just seemed way more interested, more friendly and honest."
Nelson attended a few spring workouts to watch Kill and his assistants at work -- he'll graduate a semester early, so he plans to enroll and take part in those practices next March --and spoke to several other Minnesota recruits who have been similarly impressed
"I could see why all these kids are excited to stay home now," Nelson said. "It reminds me of Iowa, my No. 2 choice -- they have a stable coaching staff and keep most of their in-state kids at home. There's a bright future with this staff."

I'm glad you posted this article Ed. I just read it and thought how great this can be in the future under Kill

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (7/20/2011 8:51:00 AM)

It's getting harder and harder not to get stoked about what's going on with U football. I am trying very hard to stay skeptical until I actually see the product on the field. It's just that Kill is so completely the opposite of any predecessor. He is completely devoid of the used car salesman, rah-rah, Gopher Nation of Brewster or the sheer arrogance and condecension of Mason or the good old boy boob like incompetance of Wacker. He has only promised his honest best. That his teams would be prepared to play to the best of their ability. He sent ripples through his team when they entered spring practice. These guys now have no doubt that there is a whole other level of work ethic and commitment required to succeed at this level. Now I hear that Kill is already nailing the bulk of the top recruits, where past years it's been about 50-50. If he nails down Persig and McDonald, it will be the best in state haul in my lifetime.

Super stuff.
I've seen this kid.
Glad we get him.
Excited about Kill.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (7/20/2011 8:52:57 AM)

Yep, Sweens ... completely different feel to it ... we hear very little about how hard they are working. Thats a good thing.
Coaches who sit in front of cameras and tell you how busy they are ... are contradicting themselves.

I'm like you Tim, I don't want to get my hopes up but reading articles like this gives that hope to me. Plus since he will be playing Brewsters players this year, we have to be prepared for some disappointment

The NCAA does not drop the hammer on Ohio State.
Isn't that sweet of them.
I'm sure Minnesota would have been let off on, too.      NOT!
What a joke.

Sounds like Marquis Gray is turning into a physical beast.

CHICAGO -- He looked more like a banker in his pinstriped suit, but MarQueis Gray is all athlete, his coach said Thursday at the Big Ten media session. "The guy that is, no question, without a doubt, the most gifted athlete on our squad is MarQueis," Jerry Kill said.
And he's getting more athletic all the time. Gray said his packed schedule of summer workouts -- three days a week with strength and conditioning coach Eric Klein, three days running informal captain's practices of his own -- has produced results. He now weighs (gulp) 245 pounds.
That's bigger than Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Vince Young, Donovan McNabb, pretty much any NFL quarterback these days. He towered over Michigan's Denard Robinson, though admittedly Robinson may be the fastest player in the league. Still, it's not hard to picture Big Ten linebackers having trouble bringing down the Gophers' new quarterback

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (7/29/2011 1:06:02 PM)

Nice.  Will be cool watching him this year.  I don't know why but I've not felt this positive about Gopher Football in a while.

Top Minnesota recruit Jonah Pirsig chooses Gophers over Iowa, Wisconsin

Blue Earth offensive lineman Jonah Pirsig is staying home to play college football.

The 6-foot-9, 290-pounder today told Gophers head coach Jerry Kill and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover that he is committing to Minnesota. The Gophers won the recruiting race for one of Minnesota's top-ranked high school seniors by beating out Iowa and Wisconsin, Pirsig's two other finalists.

David Pirsig, Jonah's father, said his son will call representatives from Iowa and Wisconsin today to inform them of his decision.

"Jonah will be committing to the Gophers this morning,'' David Pirsig said. "It is just an honor to play for Coach Kill and Coach Limegrover. He truly wants to stay in Minnesota.''

Kill and Limegrover are prohibited about commenting about Pirsig's commitment until he signs a letter of intent in early February.

Pirsig, a four-star recruit and ranked No. 1 in Minnesota by Scout.com, also had offers from Auburn, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State.

Pretty incredible considering that Brewster was the "man" when it came to recruiting.   I loved is initial passion for the job but it's becoming pretty clear that he was a used car salesman.
