With all due respect Jim, Brewster didn't have to recruit Weber in order to have him be his guy. He developed a comfort level with Weber right away and that is fine. He was the coach and entitled to make that choice. My point is that Weber probably didn't get his due from a lot of people because he was Brew's guy and Brew was widely perceived as a terrible coach.

And sorry Jim, you did not see enough of Gray under center over 2 years. He was given a handful of plays from some half assed formations that Brewster threw together. He was never put out there and given a couple of series. It was always 1 or 2 plays at a time. I really don't think you saw enough to make an educated assessment.

As to Spring performance, I doubt you were at all the practices and the scrimmage. Kill was. Kill was pleased with Gray. I'll take Kill's opinion over yours.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/6/2011 8:22:38 PM)

Weber was probably not given his due because he was Brew's guy and Brew was perceived as a bumbling moron of a coach.

Brew's guy?  Bull.  Brewster recruited Gray.  He did NOT recruit Weber.  He chose to start someone elses QB over his own.  So did Horton for a few games.

Brewster landed Gray with the promise of playing in the spread offense under Mike Dunbar that was a perfect match to his skill set. Once Gray was enroled, Brewster fired Dunbar and implemented a pro set offense that was more geared to a pocket passer.

We both know systems in college football change all the time.  Usually it's with a new head coach but it doesn't matter.  That came later anyway.  If Gray was really unhappy about it he could have transferred (like Ryan Mallett and others have).  He chose to stay.

No, but it was Brewster's fault that he changed the offense every year and could never figure out how to utilize his best potential playmaker.

Again, Adam Weber went thru all these system changes also....plus more!

Where Gray plays should be determined solely by where he helps the Gophers win the most games.

That's what happened last year at WR and people complained about it.

It also stunted his development as a QB. Limegrover has said the biggest challenge in developing Gray right now is that he really hasn't played QB in 3 years.

So Gray was starting at WR to help the team because "Where Gray plays should be determined solely by where he helps the Gophers win the most games".  Now Limegrover says that "stunted his development as a QB".   Just can't win I guess.  It's an excuse I don't buy anyway.  He was the #2 QB as a Freshman & Sophomore.

If I was Kill I would go the the most senior QB also and say that he would get chance of being number #1.

Adam Lueck?  LOL  Actually, it does sound like he's got the best grasp of the offense.

Bull nothing. Brewster recruited Gray, but he fell in love with Weber from day 1. By the time Horton came along Gray was entrenched at wide receiver. It was kind of pointless to change at that point.

Did I dispute this? I believe I stated in a couple of posts now that Weber did not get his due.

There were those like me who felt with a miserable season and a miserable offense Brewster should have his best playmaker in a position to make the most possible plays. WR was not that position. Weber was a safe QB to be sure, but Gray was the one who had a chance to be something special in a college offense. Others don't agree and that's fine.

It also stunted his development as a QB. Limegrover has said the biggest challenge in developing Gray right now is that he really hasn't played QB in 3 years.

Whether you buy it or not Limegrover knows a hell of a lot more about it than either one of us. And I still agree that he helped us more at WR than he would have at QB. But that's just my opinion.

And all of this really has nothing to do with my original point of taking relentless shots at Gray as a QB when there is such a tiny body of work to evaluate. At least with those who didn't like Weber there was a significant body of work to evaluate.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/7/2011 12:40:02 PM)

Next up:  New Mexico State

Last week they lost to Ohio U (from the MAC) 44-24.  Late in the 3rd qtr they were trailing 44-10.  NMSU gave up 241 yard rushing and 211 passing.  They gained just 6 yards rushing while passing for 362.

Is this a team we can blow out?

Gophers favored by about 20.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/7/2011 4:04:17 PM)

The Gophers should be able to stomp the life out of this team. I wouldn't want to be a Gopher player in practice next week if they fail to do so.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/7/2011 6:23:24 PM)

It's kind of weird to say but their confidence should be up too after that loss [&:]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Football (9/8/2011 6:58:34 PM)

The comment was made this morning that Gray's replacement (Shortell) did well against the Trojans, but he benefited from being a very different kind of quarterback, which the Trojans obviously did not prepare and game plan for.

It's funny because they actually knocked USC out of the top 25 by losing to them by only 2 pts.

Yep. USC game planned for Gray and his running. Kiffen was comparing to Vince Young leading up to the game. Shortell is the opposite. A pass first pro style QB. Shortell also had the benefit of taking over an offense that had started to find its rhythm. Gray was the one that had to start with a new coach, new system, new players on the road against a ranked opponent. That's why you schedule game 1 against a team you are supposed to beat. So that the players get a chance to execute their offense and find some continuity.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 12:09:28 PM)

Kill out amongst the students yesterday, giving away tickets.
Hopefully this student body gives him a look and lets him win them back.
Would be fun to see that stadium full and rocking for games that mean something.
We need to see an ass-kicking today.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 1:43:33 PM)

Jackrabbits getting absolutely crushed and embarrassed by the mighty Illinois Illini today. 56-3 with 6 minutes to go. Didn't the Gophers lose to the Jackrabbits last year? What a disaster our program has become. No excuse to lose to SDSU, even when Brewster is your coach. Hopefully Kill will never let something like that happen again.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 1:46:22 PM)

Great article in paper this morning on how Kill has befriended a 10 year old girl with cancer . She will be leading the Gophers on to the field this afternoon. I hope we can hear crowd yelling out Mia as she runs onto the field

No, not even close Matt ... we lost to powerhouse USD Coyotes.
Get your super-powers straight.

I saw nothing wrong with that SDSU/Illini game, its exactly how it SHOULD play out.
Minnesota SHOULD play UND, NDSU, SDSU, USD ..... and BEAT the crap outta them.
Everyone's happy. The small schools get good exposure and get paid.
The big schools sharpen their teeth.
Well, at least thats how its supposed to work ... [&o]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 2:34:42 PM)

SDSU merely damn-near beat us the year before. [&:]

Or ... some say they did.

Since that's Miles' school, that might be even worse. [:D]

The Gophers have a better chance of losing to New Mexico State or Miami (OH) at home than they do winning at Northwestern, Purdue or Michigan.

Maybe I'll look like an idiot (like I need any help) in a few hours, but I'll go ahead and bump this up now.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 2:56:17 PM)

Gray does not look at all comfortable throwing the ball...

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:04:53 PM)

I was wrong about a mismatch today.
We'll be damn lucky to win this one.
No physical dominance, at least early. [:o]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:06:46 PM)

Gray keepers would have netted about 100 hundreds by now.
The play-calling is suspect on the roll-outs, with all long patterns.
Weird start.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:07:14 PM)

At least we used to have an offensive line that would crush teams like this, no more.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:24:33 PM)

Wow. Gray starts to get some rhythm, makes a very nice throw (with an unbelievable catch), and then totally melts down with 1st and goal from the 3.

1st Down: Has a wide-open TE and throws the ball 10 feet over his head.
2nd Down: Sacks himself for 8 yards.
3rd Down: Throws directly into traffic resulting in an easy tip INT.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:44:09 PM)

This defense is absolutely putrid. There is no excuse for letting NMState march up and down the field like this.

The offensive game planning has also been really bad.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:44:44 PM)

This blows...

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/10/2011 3:51:01 PM)

chipscoggins
New Mexico State QB Andrew Manley is 12-for-12 passing for 197 yards and three TDs. And we have nearly seven minutes left in first half.
