Lou Holtz has a voice for print media. Here's an idea, help our unemployment problem, fire his old ass and give a job to somebody that will do their homework, and not show up to the job all messed up on Nyquil.

My thoughts:

The defense is still just plain awful. Bad angles and sloppy tackling.
Gray has a long way to go as a passer.
Shortell did not look nearly as good in week 2.
The offensive game planning stunk. Just plain stunk.
Yesterday was a basement Brew reboot IMO.

Super glad Kill is fine but that performance sucked.  Plain and simple from all angles.  2 weeks in a row the team comes out looking like there is no game plan.  Just see what the other team is going to do and try to adjust at half time. 

Gray plays QB about as well as I do at this stage, he just a better arm.  Doesn't do any good if he doesn't see where the ball needs to go to.   At some point Pawlenty pulled a fast one on MN football and banned pass defense from the state.  I think we (fans) just seemed to have missed the bill.

These are the Gophers. Everyone seems to be forgetting that. We lose to borderline D-II programs all the time.


I see your point, but you're being too harsh. Last year's debacle still won three games. An improvement on that isn't outrageous to expect.

Five wins seems about right, and I'd be happy with that. If you're competitive against Wisconsin, so much the better.

Anything more than that is gravy.

Now that we know Kill is OK....

Give me some props, Tim and Dave.

Jeff, I think Gray gets a little too much flack at this point. He made some bad plays to be sure, but believe it or not he made some really good throws as well. The kind that either my guy catches it or nobody catches it. The receivers also did not help either him or Shortell yesterday. The problem with Gray is that there is still too much thought process involved. A lot of times you can see he is trying to aim it and thinking about mechanics instead of just throwing it. I think when some of that stuff becomes second nature you will see his passing improve. Yesterday the game plan was just bad. They seemed more focused on showing as many looks as possible than establishing anything. They were clearly having more success with straight drops and play action, but they kept stubbornly going back to the roll outs where Gray was ineffective both throwing and running. The short yardage sets made no sense. The shotgun draw on 4th and half a yard at the goal line is one of the single worst play calls I have ever seen in my life.

Going forward Kill's success is going to depend largely on his ability to self assess. Brew had no concept of self assessment and repeated bad coaching performances. I hope for much better from Kill.

The way I see it, we have to wait a few years for Kill to weed out Brewsters recruits. And Brew was suppose to be a top notch recruiter

Or turn them into better players. Some of them have 2 or 3 years of bad habits to correct. That was the part of the equation Basement Brew could never grasp. Once you got these 4 star kids in the door you have to actually coach them.

Whats very telling about players ... there were 2 or 3 batted balls in our secondary that just hung up there in the air for what seemed like minutes .... and not one of the 5 Gopher defenders within sight of the ball could react in time to simply step to it and pick it off.
They look more athletic, they look more prepared, but no one's showing it.
We went thru a 5 min spurt in the third quarter where we stepped up and punched them in the face play after play, and then we totally went away from that.
We either lack elite athletes, or game smarts, or both.
Weird thing, even the last couple of years, the smaller schools just kill us with their smaller, quick outside-threat guys. We seem to have no answer for scat-back quick dudes. We get into Big Ten play, and we actually look better, imo.
On offense, Gray trying too hard to be a drop-back passer. You're not kid. If he had been more decisive early, I swear he would have run wild on them. He plays like he has a leash on him holding him back. And he needs to get the cramps figured out. You are going to carry the load kid, get your body ready to go for 4 quarters.

Fair assessment, I think. Some plays you see the athleticism and you're giddy; others, particularly one of the late interceptions, you wonder what in the hell he's seeing on the field. Needs more time and needs to feel more comfortable out there.

Nope. They failed miserably to cash in on a major size and strength advantage. This is also a fairly athletic line, so the word disappointment is an understatement.

It's too late IMO.  He has what, this year and next of eligibility?   He's a long way off at this point to no fault of his own.  I'm afraid he'll never be the college QB he could have been.  What a waste of an incredible athlete with a great arm.

Ruined forever by some mystical force out there in the universe, huh?  LOL  I think he's just under a lot of pressure right now.  He was pretty much annointed the team savior since the year began.  Not to mention the lack of a running game.  An all around bad deal for Q.  I'm pretty disappointed with the running game so far.  That was supposed to be a big improvement...and with those three 5th year senior guys inside...it just hasn't happened.  I'll give the tackles a break because they are young and haven't been terrible IMO.

I believe Shortell/Sortell(whatever) got a couple series to 'provide spark' again.Or see if he could.

For what it's worth, the worthless announcers did say it was cramps.   Not sure how believable that is/was.  It looked to me like it was to bring a bit of a spark.

I doubt it was for spark since Gray led them on a TD drive right before the half. That's a pretty good spark right there. Gray has had a big problem with cramping. He sweats so profusely that they actually have to have a change of jersey ready for him at practice.

And he was hooked up to an IV when they came out for the 2nd half.

If he's going to be the guy, they need to do a better job of keeping him hydrated during games.
