I guess Kill created a "Loafers" shirt that also has "I quit on my team". He has players that are late for practice and other minor infractions wear them. I guess Gray is wearing one

Yikes. Who else is wearing one?

There are others, but not as high profile so other names were't brought up. I don't think it's a big deal right now. If it keeps happening, then it will be

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 9:52:41 AM)

Will be interesting to see if we get bullied around again by big, tough, NDSU today.
Amazing that a B10 school is petrified to play these guys.
Don't get me wrong ... they are a great program, but if you are a major-college team, YOU should do the manhandling.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 7:03:56 PM)

How can the coaching staff not have this team ready for this game?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 7:38:06 PM)

This defense is an incredible embarrassment. The idea of Tim Brewster being a master recruiter of division 1 talent has been exposed as one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on Gopher fans. These guys are just getting manhandled and shredded by D1A offensive players. Just a disgusting display.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 8:33:38 PM)

And while I love the guy, Kill deserves to be slapped for that final drive of the 1st half. After Shortell took them down for the last TD and with 24 seconds on the clock and decent field position, he puts Gray back in and calls a couple of runs. That set up the long pass attempt and well you know the rest. Truly pathetic.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 9:02:44 PM)

I think the Gray era is officially over.  Shortell made the big mistake at the end but at least there is hope there.  If they stick with Gray for this year and next we are looking at 6 wins, tops (both years).

The D is so bad (really the offensive pass too) why bother trying to develop Gray at this point?

panndder -> RE: Gopher Football (9/24/2011 11:22:43 PM)

If defenses prep for Shortell and he plays every snap he is mincemeat with this OL. Even if we ignore that, Shortell hasn't proven he's any better than Gray. They're different styles and they've both looked good and bad at points.

I have to agree.  Sloppy, undisciplined and poor tackling.  Yet, this defense returns 8 of 11 starters (plus every backup?) from last years team which managed to defeat Illinois and Iowa late in the season.  They lost DT Edwards, CB Collado, and Safety Theret....not great players.

I don't get it.....

I wasn't implying that Shortell is better than Gray.  Just that we see what Gray has and there isn't enough time for him grow in to a player that can lead this team to victories.  I have no idea if Shortell can either but at least he has 3+ years ahead of him.

Who knows, Gray could have been the man but Brewster and Co. dicked him around for 2 years and wasted that development time.

I don't either.  Pass rush on this team is just an oxymoron.  I laughed one time yesterday.  I don't remember the player but one guy actually beat a block and then just stopped and waited for their QB to throw so he could try and jump up and block it.  It actually looked like he had no idea what to do.

It was sad, pathetic and funny all at the same time.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2011 10:21:14 AM)

Right now it doesn't matter what QB plays if they don't fix defense.

I saw Bennett have best runs while Shortel was QB. I think a lot of that is the defense has to play pass more when he is in which opens running game. With Gray the safeties come in to protect him from running which closes the running game for RB also

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2011 11:10:37 AM)

Agreed Fargo. I'm not saying the QB position is what is losing us these games. The D is horrible. Worst I've ever seen and I didn't that was even possible.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2011 11:20:25 AM)

Congrats to NDSU
Came in and embarassed the big boys again. And again. And again.
Local boy from here is the starting OT for them, never thought he;d make it up there, and he proved me wrong.
They dominated us physically. Never should happen.
What a nightmare.

Guest -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2011 11:22:48 AM)

WOW....NDSU beats the Gophers, 37 to 24 in the Gophers stadium.  The shiny new stadium that was going to ressurect this once proud football program that has been pretty much in shambles since the mid 1960's with a couple of bright years during that period.

This wasn't some win pulled out by a lucky play at the end where the Gophers push them up and down the field.  NDSU outgained the Gophers 336 to 292 total yards.

While this was going on, Wisconsin destroyed our Coyotes as they should, 59 to 10.  The Coyotes played the Badgers very tough for most of the first two quarters but then the speed of a top ranked FBS school blew a good FCS school off the field.  USD had a breakaway run to the Badgers 40 that would have gone for a touchdown early in the game had it not been for a flagrant face mask penalty....next play, QB for USD throws an interception.

Later, with the Badgers holding a 10 - 0 lead, Coyotes march down the field and get inside the 20 only to have their drive stopped and resort to a FG.  Both plays were huge as they were needed to give the Coyotes some positive reinforcement.

Then the speed of Wisconsin took over.  Game over.

And the Coyotes are a better team than last season when they beat the Gophers.  Significantly better.

It will be a long season for the U of M.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2011 11:29:09 AM)

Yep, thats the worst part.
I'd accept flukes or emotion-driven upsets ...
Every other B10 team yesterday manhandled lesser schools the way they are supposed to.
We have accepted being on a level playing field with the USDs and SDSUs and NDSUs .... and we simply are not.
It should be a great experience for those teams just to play in big venues and compete hard, but get beat, and take home a big check.
If they are clearly better than the big school .... somethings wrong. Seriously wrong.

And my apologies to Illinois for thinking we could beat them in MN for the season finale. No way in hell. Illinois appears to be much improved over last year, while we appear to be somehow, some way, worse than last year.

Kill is admitting himself to the Mayo Clinic to get to the bottom of his seizure issue.

Curious what your thoughts would be on Ryan Tannehill?

Pass rush on this team is just an oxymoron

A lot of folks blame the secondary, which is bad for sure.  But IMO, our biggest problem is the pass rush (or lack there of).  These guys, especially the ends, rarely get any pressure.  How many sacks did NDSU have..and how many did we have?  In this last game, I thought Michael Amaefula really killed us.  Not just the weak rush, but he lost contain on the RB a couple of times which gave up big plays.  A true freshman so I won't beat him up too much.
I think I would move Anthony Jacobs back to DE, and start Kendall Gregory-McGhee on the other side.  You still wouldn't get any pass rush, but at least they have a chance to stop the run.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2011 12:12:55 PM)

I wish we would have recruited him.  Same type bio but going against real teams he's:

892 yards for 6 TD's.

NDSU got more sacks (3) in one Gophers series on Saturday than the Gophers have gotten all year.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2011 2:56:01 PM)

re: pass rush vs. secondary to blame.

It's both.  Yes a good rush can cover up a lot of bad secondary play, because it doesn't matter if a receiver is open if the QB can't get him the ball.  And yes, if given enough time to sit comfortably in the pocket a QB can pick apart even a good secondary.

But even with a rush there will still be more than enough plays where a receiver makes a little head fake and puts the defender 5 yards out of position.  A good QB doesn't need much time to exploit that.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2011 4:12:40 PM)

But when you are dead last in the NCAA and suck again this year....it's a huge problem.  The line just isn't generating pressure.  It's not like we have a couple hurries or "almost got there moments".  There is nadda.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2011 4:18:27 PM)

Overall you still see our defensive players leaving their lanes, taking bad lines to the ball carrier and being completely inept at tacking. There is not one strong position on that defense. It's just plain putrid in every conceivable aspect of the game.
