What was that? A 2 yard punt?

Yeah, that was sweat that he was able to double his average like that.

Cannot be prouder of a team (that had an over-all crappy season)
That was as satisfying a win as I've ever witnessed.
For all the reasons Pete and jeff and Matt discussed.
Why do we suddenly know how to tackle? And block?
Thats not a bad Illini team, and we dominated them physically.
So much fun to see the players and students LOVING football for a change.
Congrats Mr Kill, I am gladly drinking the kool-aid right now. This guy gets it.
A snake-oil salesman would have written more into yesterdays game, would have promised this or that ... Kill just paid homage to a great grop of kids (his seniors) ... then promised to get back to work.
I love how the future looks, with this regime in charge. Because they know what it takes to improve and to win.
Better athletes, better techniques, better preparation, better focus, better program.
The sideline is a huge indicator ... it is full of coaches who are tuned-in completely, and players who are involved, and ready to play. [8|]

Great game Gophers.
I'm thrilled for the program and especially for the Seniors and coaches.

Classy as always. Yo da best SteveO
And you do know what a good program looks like.
Hope we are on that track.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2011 11:57:29 AM)

Pete or panndder ... were either of you there yesterday?
Seemed like a GREAT atmosphere, even with all the empty seats.
This school is BEGGING for a program to get behind.
Loved the sideline dancing up-and-down with the crowd... thats how you get students there and keep em there (along with playing well)

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2011 1:52:52 PM)

Our nice win yesterday cost Ron Zook his job.
Fired after 7 years at Illinois.
It ain't easy turning Big10 also-rans into contenders.
It seems you can find guys to get you to a certain level of competitiveness... but getting over the hump is the thing very few can do.
Alvarez accomplished it. Feretz for a short period of time.
There are a half-dozen of us that simply can never get it together (and keep it together)
We turn our eyes to you, Jerry Kill. [:D]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2011 4:27:06 PM)

I couldn't get the game on my tv, but from what I heard, Illinois gave up on the game. That's the worst thing that can happen if you are the coach.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2011 5:03:35 PM)

Ron Zook fired today

Yeah, I went. Not many people there, but they seemed really appreciative of the effort. As my dad said, this was the best possible thing that could happen for season ticket renewals. Let's hope some of the old rich folks decide to give this team another chance next year.

The sideline going crazy was one of the highlights of the entire game. It was an amazing contrast: literally EVERYONE on the Minnesota sideline jumping around and going absolutely crazy to a song (I've never seen anything like it!), and the Illinois sideline standing around looking demoralized. And then you realize that Kill tapes the sideline and later reviews which players were involved in the game and which players were sulking.

This program still has a long ways to go, but I'm starting to see some daylight at the end of the tunnel.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (11/27/2011 9:39:24 PM)

Two thumbs up, my friend.
Was hoping you were there enjoying it.
The good feelings from that game are still giving me chills.
Went out on my regular routine to see my elderly parents today. They are getting furtehr away from reality every day ... but nothing I mean NOTHING perks them up like a Gopher vistory.
Esp in FB. My Mom was downright giddy, and in true "my family" fashion ... brought up the unis and said ... "it felt like we were back at the U cheering for Upchurch and Foggie again"
Yep, Ma ... it did.
I hope the people who runs sports teams in this state realize how many die-hard fans they have out in the sticks.

Even with all the denials all last week, word is that Urban Meyer will be announced as new HC at OSU today. I haven't heard of a firing but then current coach might just been interim coach

That's exactly right; Fickle only had a one year deal.

I have no doubt that Meyer will get them back on track quickly. But his credibility is questionable at best.

Remember that we won our last 2 games last year and I saw a lot of those same things back then.  The difference will be the same coaches & system return (I hope!!!)

What was the deal with Scheelhaase?  He's about their best player and I hardly saw him.  Hageman WAS a beast!  Very nice when he rag dolled Cornell and sacked O'Toole.  That's the Optimus Prime we need to show up next year.

The all Big Ten teams should be coming out soon.  Any predictions with the Gophers?  I don't think anybody is a lock.  Here are my guesses....

- Kim Royston has a decent shot at Honorable Mention.  He easily led our team tackles.
- Da'jon McKnight, Chris Bunders, & Gary Tinsley could get thrown a bone by someone....but I doubt it.
- Troy Stoudemire would have had a chance if not for the injury.  He made it on special teams last year
- Jordan Wettstein didn't miss a field goal (did miss one PAT), but his body of work is not big enough.
- Collin McGarry was largely unsung by everyone not on Kill's staff.  I see him getting some kind of award from Kill.
- Tommy Olson would have had a great chance at the all Freshman team if not for the injury.
- Marcus Jones & Jimmy Gjere were possible candidates if not for the injuries.
- Zac Epping, Ben Perry, & Michael Amaefula have an outside shot depending on their Freshman competition.

Pretty cool Mr Decker

Eric Decker is living a charmed life these days.
The former Gophers wide receiver ranks fourth in the NFL in touchdown catches, owns a front-row seat to Tebowmania and is dating drop-dead gorgeous country and pop singer Jessie James.
The guy probably has a winning lottery ticket sitting on his dresser right now.
"Everything is going great," he said Monday.
You could hardly blame Decker for pinching himself, except his emergence as a big-play receiver in his second season with the Denver Broncos has nothing to do with luck. Patience yes, and a lot of hard work. But his success is not by accident.
Just ask his mentor.
"He is a guy that is self-motivated and is confident in his God-given ability," Larry Fitzgerald Jr. wrote in an e-mail. "He wants to be special so it comes natural to him. I know anybody that knows him and knows what he stands for is happy for him. He deserves it all."
Tim Tebow's polarizing presence and winning-ugly style has put the Broncos at the center of the NFL universe. Denver is 5-1 with Tebow as its starting quarterback and suddenly in the playoff hunt.
As the Tebow phenomenon grows by the week, Decker's development blossoms amid less hysteria and fanfare.
He has 37 catches for 527 yards and eight touchdowns entering Sunday's game against the Vikings. He also returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown against Oakland.
Decker caught a touchdown pass and added a 39-yard reception on third-and-11 on Denver's game-tying drive in Sunday's overtime victory at San Diego. He hauled in Tebow's deep heave while falling down.
"I told him, if he feels any pressure just throw it up because I'm going to either make a play for him or not let it get intercepted," Decker said.
That confidence was missing last season. A serious foot injury that ended his senior season with the Gophers continued to weigh on him as a rookie. A third-round pick, Decker caught only six passes all season and struggled to find his place as he learned three different receiver spots.
"My foot was always on my mind whether it was making a cut, getting off the line of scrimmage," he said. "I know I wasn't in the best football shape and that really set me back. You add a little pressure to yourself because you want to make an impression on the coaching staff. I was making mistakes that kind of snowballed with my confidence."
He turned a corner this past summer. His foot became a non-issue and he threw himself into workouts with Fitzgerald, an All-Pro receiver with the Arizona Cardinals and fellow Minnesota native.
"It's like he has iron lungs, he never gets tired," Fitzgerald said. "I remember when he hurt his foot a few years back and he hadn't ran in months. The first day he came back he beat everybody. I was just shaking my head in disbelief with the effort he puts forth and how he was able to pull that off. He just wants it."
Decker tries to follow Fitzgerald's lead. Both are big, physical receivers who refuse to cut corners in their preparation. They work ridiculously hard in the offseason on their conditioning, route-running and finer points of the position.
"Larry is a guy I really look up to," Decker said. "I want to be like him. I want to be as good as he is as a football player, but more as a man and what he does in the community. Just being around him, I knew my potential was great."
He's put it on display this season. Alternating between the slot and outside spots, Decker averages 14.2 yards per catch and has made several clutch grabs to help feed the Tebow craze.
"From the moment he walked into the facility, it was Tebowmania," Decker said. "He's a guy that doesn't get caught up with all of it. The team doesn't get caught up with it. Obviously we know he's a big icon. He handles himself very maturely.
"Sometimes it can be comical. You see the Tebowing thing. All of sudden, it's an international phenomenon. We're like, 'What just happened?' We do laugh about it and he does too. He knows that sometimes things get a little crazy. But the person he is, he's able to really separate himself from that."
Decker occasionally finds himself in non-football-related news, too. Such as two weeks ago when his girlfriend performed at halftime of the Broncos-New York Jets game. That was the only game this season in which Decker didn't catch a pass.
"People asked me if she was a distraction," Decker said, laughing. "I said, 'I'm just happy someone actually showed up that night and performed.' I didn't carry my weight that night and she definitely did."

Love the idea of red-shirtiing Mr Nelson for a year, prrepping him for Grays job, after we rise back to respectability next season ...

Philip Nelson would prefer not to be the featured attraction. When asked about his greatest strength, he simply describes himself as a team player.
But he's going to have to get used to the attention.
Nelson was named the Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year on Tuesday, culminating a remarkable career as Mankato West's quarterback. He finished his senior season with 2,784 yards and 35 touchdowns passing in just 12 games, plus 1,243 yards and 20 more scores rushing for a team that averaged nearly 50 points per game.
"I'm the type of guy that likes to stay out of the spotlight. I'll admit it," Nelson said.
West coach Mark Esch has reminded him that he'll have to learn even more how to handle that as he moves forward. He's going to graduate early and enroll at the University of Minnesota in January so he can get an early start on his college career.
"There was a lot of pressure on him this year. We had that No. 1 ranking all year. Everybody knew he was going to the Gophers, but he's such a humble and hard-working guy. Shoot, he was out there battling every game," Esch said.
Fans, opponents and recruiters have watched West's games with extra curiosity and fascination over the past three years as Nelson's profile grew, but he did his best amid the scrutiny to stay focused on being a good teammate and helping the Scarlets win even though his passes to senior wide receiver Hunter Friesen turned heads all fall.
"That's something I'm going to miss, just watching them `wow' people," Esch said. "Kids from other teams definitely knew about that and knew he was the real deal. He comes out and he performs at such a high level, I think it takes the steam out of a lot of teams."
Nelson set the state career record with 135 total touchdowns. He helped lead the Scarlets to the Class 4A semifinals, where they lost to Bemidji and finished 11-1. But despite the missing state title, this was one of those special teams that comes along only once in a while, even for a powerhouse program like West's.
"I've never seen a team so unified," Nelson said.
Nelson's father played at Wisconsin, and the family settled in Madison. But a move to Mankato in 2005 turned Nelson into a Minnesotan, sowing the seed for his eventual commitment to wear maroon and gold for his college career instead of the red and white he always envisioned.
"At the beginning of the recruiting process, I said there was no way I'd be a Gopher," Nelson said.
But that was when Tim Brewster was the coach. When Jerry Kill was hired to replace him a year ago, he and his staff reached out to Nelson right away.
"I really hit it off with those guys. They're so honest. They're one of the most friendly coaching staffs I've ever met," Nelson said.
And there was Kill, with quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski, visiting Nelson in Mankato on Monday to talk about his season and what's to come.
"It still hasn't hit me that it's over, but at the same time I'm starting to get excited to get up there and get settled in," Nelson said.

Dave E -> RE: Gopher Football (11/30/2011 9:49:54 AM)

Yep -- no brainer to redshirt him, in my mind. I know Scoggins is trying to establish his columnist-name by setting bowl-expectations for the Gophers next year -- and sure, you want to see that level of improvement -- but I want to see a solid team 2-3 years from now. If we have to suffer again next year to get there, fine. Not what I'd prefer, but Kill has done enough in my mind to earn that level of patience.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/1/2011 1:19:04 AM)

Right on Dave.
Love the attitude change, you can literally feel it happening.
And there won't be any miracles next year like you say.
Lets just be patient and let this guy work. His staff seems to be top-notch.
I love seeing the local kids think about the U first now ... the way it should be.
Fill that stadium with geeked-up Gopher fans next year, and we go from there.

Pretty telling for recruiting purposes that Nelson wouldn't even talk to Brew, but fell in love with Kill and his staff.

I'm sure Brew is a fine recruiter when he's got Mack Brown (or potentially Urban Meyer) behind him. Probably comes off like a complete doofus when he doesn't.
